There's this relatively new RS column called "The Singles," wherein rock stars review the latest singles from, well, other rock stars. In this issue, they interviewed none other than our favorite rock 'n' roll God, Maximus Blackus. I'll transcribe the dern thing. The most interesting segment? Frank reviewing Panjabi MC.
Radiohead, "There There" Rolling Stone says: Radiohead rediscover missing guitars - phew! Frank Black: I like the guitar sound; it's got a good Stones-y vibe. My only complaint - and I say it affectionately - I'm always wanting Thom Yorke to enunciate a little more. I'm an older guy, I guess. I wanna hear the words.
Panjabi MC, "Beware of the Boys (Mundian to Bach Ke)" RS: Anglo-Indian DJ and Jay-Z push bhanga into the mainstream. Black: There's a lot of world hip-hop that seems to be too drum-loopy for me, but I like this. It's heavy on the original vocal stylings and instrumentation. like that's more East than West.
Clay Aiken, "Bridge Over Troubled Water," RS: Squeaky-clean American Idol channels classic Simon and Garfunkel joint. Black: There are certain cover songs you just shouldn't bother with. I mean, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - you don't want to touch that one. But plenty of others have made that mistake.
Foo Fighters, "Low" RS: Back from hiatus, Dave Grohl and Co. make spacey prog-metal. Black: It's a bit warmer sounding than what I've associated with their records. I like this one - good drumming. It always seemed to me that [Nirvana] were paying us a compliment, but they were being kind of modest. I don't think they needed the Pixies to exist, really, ut it was nice of them to drop the name.
Michelle Branch, "Are You Happy Now?" RS: Twenty-year-old discovers that love can sour; writes song. Black: This is a little too contemporary for my tastes, I suppose. Having said that, I'm thankful that my first record didn't come out when I was sixteen. At least in mainstream music the vocals are loud.
The Polyphonic Spree, "It's the Sun" RS: Robe-clad twenty-four piece choral-pop! Black: This is the most interesting and most original thing I've heard so far, with a good Bee Gees vibe. Their quiet / loud dynamic is even more extreme than the Pixies [laughs]. And with that big an entourage, you gotta give them credit, because they're not in it for the money.
The White Stripes, "The Air Near My Fingers" RS: Duochrome duo adds keyboard washes to its grungy garage rock. Black: Very Lou Reed at the beginning, and then it starts to sound very Southern rock. As usual, [Jack White] has at least one foot placed in '68, which is fine by me. I'm no White Stripes expert, but I always like 'em when I hear 'em.

I don't think Frank is the type to really blast other musicians directly. Not often anyway, though admittedly I can think of a few occasions. |

Yeah, back in the days of Black Francis he would, because he kind of played up the cocky-genius persona. Now he doesn't,he's more open minded. He understands that when you get a little older you just sound grumpy and bitter when you blast new music. |
