I'm a bit of a Luddite, usually behind the times with technology. Never liked the idea of music on my phone, it irrationally just seemed wrong to me - always gone for ipods or decent mp3/high res players. So when my last one recently died I thought I'd try a music player app to tide me over (Poweramp). Didn't expect much, assumed it would sound inferior, but my god - everything played through it sounds pretty amazing to me. Taken aback to say the least.
I'm a convert, then. So what's the point of these stand alone players now? I was going to buy an expensive Fiio high res player but I've got the quality I wanted for next to nothing. |

I like music on my phone, until I run out of space and then I have to question what music I need to have outside of the walls of my house.
Fuck vinyl. That's nice if you have a big house and a nice record player, but for the rest of us living in the real world. Vinyl is made from oil, whereas FLAC is made from sand.
You want VLC on your Android. |

I've got a PONO player, but I've barely used it at all.
It sounds much better than my iPod Touch, if you have hi-res FLAC files and you are listening through nice headphones or a good stereo. It makes no difference in my car.
You will not get very good sound out of the headphone jack on an iPod Touch. If you want to listen to hi-res files on the iPod you have to use the line-out into something with a better amplifier.
The PONO music website has been on hold for more than a year now. It took a couple of years before I could buy music from the website in Canada, and now I'm waiting again.
PONO say they are going to be, I guess a skin of, 7digital and I've considered buying from that site, I've bought several Blu-Ray Audio discs, but the selection is limited. And I'm still conflicted about not having a physical token of what I bought. I mean, I'm sure PONO is as close to done as it is to being profitable, and what do I have after they are gone, a few bits ready to disappear in an EMP.

Yeah I'd tried a few apps but Poweramp was the one I went with, sounded the best to me. Got some of these on the way - an absolute steal by all accounts. https://www.trinityaudioengineering.com/collections/original-series/products/trinity-hyperion |

I've had a few different iPods and currently own a 160GB classic. Sound's good enough for me with the set of Sennheiser noise reducing plugs I bought for it. They're a bit awkward to get in but I have no complaints about the quality.
My only complaint about iPods is the restriction in memory they seem to have. 160GB might have been a lot ten years ago, but not now. Apple don't want people to be playing non-Apple format music on them though. That's what killed the iPod Classic in my view, that and the fact the control wheel is rubbish. Touch screens are way better.
When I went from the iPod nano to the iPod touch I was apprehensive about the new technology, but since going back to the wheel with the classic I now favour the new Star Trek technology.
They can fit so much memory on tiny little micro-SD cards now so there was no reason why the iPod Classic couldn't have been rebooted to accomodate more space, and I predict it might make a come back. The HD inside as well is not really a very sturdy design for a portable msuci device, and it makes noises when it's loading the album.
As OLDMANOTY says Android and micro-SD cards are the way to go. My Sony Experia M2 sounds pretty good as well, and they are designed so that you don't have to flip open the back and take the battery out to replace the cards, both the micro-SD card and sim card slot in conveniently on the side which means there is no limit to how much music you can take with you.

Not having memory card slots on the Apple devices is cruel.

I really wanted one of those, but by the time Neil finally got it on the market, his pitch about hi-res audio fell flat because my iPhone could play just as hi-res files as the Pono. But I've always rooted for Neil's efforts. I'm glad he tried.

On a stupid whim I bought a high res player the other day (Cowon Pleneu D) that I can't really afford. It has glowing reviews but now I've got it... it doesn't sound as good as my phone to me. I'm clearly not an audiophile. |

Apparently the Marshall London phone is the best phone for listening to Audio, I'm not sure they still make it though.
I use an Asus Android phone that can apparently play Hi-Res Audio files. I can't verify that, but it sounds great to me. As someone above mentioned micro SD cards on Android phones to increase the memory, should also add that playing files direct from USB via an 'OTG' adapter is a good option. |
