I´ve listened to this album a lot of times, and while using headphones I´ve noticed that there is at lot of crackle and pops. I´m not a studio engineer but it sounds almost like the audio is clipping on some tracks. I´m not saying this to criticize the recording people involved, but only as an obeservation. It´s kind of cool that these latest FB and the C´s records are lo-fi, prestine audio quality does´nt make a good record. |

Some of you folks either have better hearing than I or have a different copy of the album or something as I don't hear any crackles, pops, hisses or anything wrong with the sound.
Of course, there's always been those that say they can tell the difference between a high bit-rate MP3 and an actual CD...I never could personally, so maybe age and too many loud concerts have cost me some hearing............ |

Or the audio on your computer is too hot and is clipping the output. Check your volume control under accessories/entertainment.

i noticed when i got headphones and started listening ot stuff a lot on them, that many cds have crackles. its kinda surprisng. i noticed it bad on Exile on Mainstreet and Let It Bleed, but they are older so its possibly excuseable, though not really cause Let It Bleed is an SACD hybrid release. And also on teenager of the year i noticed it.

I have the 192 Kbps mp3´s, but I burned them on a CD-RW so I could listen to them on the stereo. I was listening thru the stereo when I noticed the hissing (check out the beginning of New House of the Pope and Horrible Day) and the other stuff, so the hot computer output theory is off. It could be the use of (very?) old analog recording equipment that cause these artifacts - the price you pay for wanting authentic sound I guess. |

I think you are all mad to discuss the recording quality when all you have heard are the mp3s.
I am not criticizing listening to the album early in any way.
I just mean, relax and wait till the FINISHED, MASTERED, honest to goodness actual cda recordings come out before you get all geeky with the recording quality discussions. |

the crackling you hear is a special slightly degenerating sound that we have digitally encoded into the album, which activates only when the cd is placed into a recordable drive and "ripped" into digital audio files like the ever-popular "mp3" file. the careful listener will notice that with each successive listen of the digital audio file, the crackle becomes slightly more pronounced until, eventually, the file becomes unlistenable and self-destructs, and the listener is left with nothing but a pop-up window that says "should've bought the album, sucker!!"
now if you'll excuse me, i'm off to sell the patent for this device to those fellows in metallica. |

Sarah, sorry if I don't believe you or assume that you are being overtly sarcastic. My copy still sounds flawless..... |

I'm sure Lars would be VERY interested in the technology, particularly if after the pop-up, the cd spun out of the player at high velocity and severed the head of the offending listener. St. Anger indeed. |

mp3 quality sux to an audiophile. it's not hard to distort the sound or make it crackle and pop. i used to have a Rio Car (empeg II) in dash mp3 player in my truck. it had a 40gb laptop HD and was pretty cool untill i got 4 new MB Quarts and noticed how crappy it really sounded @ higher volumes, or when you raise teh seperate db levels on any of the eq bands.
