Fifth time seeing Pixies and while they played pretty well my experience was a bit soured by a fairly lifeless crowd. Granted Arcade Fire were headliners and a lot of people must have been there primarily to see them but it was still a bit frustrating noticing the lack of attention for songs like Ed Is Dead or Rock Music (which fucking rocked). I'd say BF felt similar as he finished up the set ever-so-slightly early when his guitar died just when they were about to blast into Debaser. "My guitar just died - I'll take that as a sign". Some crowd interaction if anything. :P Plus it's pretty fitting that the last thing he screamed to the crowd was Tame.
Hopefully the next time I see them is indoors but Pixies anywhere is still Pixies, i.e. they're still a class live act. And Arcade Fire afterwards were spectacular (they even did a little WIMM singalong).
Some of my favourites were Gouge Away, Ed Is Dead (which had a long-ish intro), Rock Music, Here Comes Your Man and Bag Boy.

A lot of people are criticising BF for getting pissy about his guitar breaking and leaving early. It *was* an abrupt ending but some people are taking it a bit too seriously since Pixies had maybe five minutes more until their allocated time ended.

I haven't seen them live since Kim left, but the next time they roll into town I think I'll grab a ticket pronto. The new songs have grown on me plus Paz seems to be settling in nicely. |

I think it's a rule that applies across all genres. The hardcore listener wants to hear the lesser played songs, the casual fan, the hits, though I don't know how people could blow off Rock Music. I have to find a video of Ed is Dead, not one of my favorite's but I'd like to hear the extended intro.
Thanks for the review! |

Might have been a bit generous labelling it an extended intro - it was BF churning out the opening guitar line repeatedly for a while.

Ha, ha that's fine, I didn't have huge expectations or anything. I saw a clip from a different '14 show where Frank kinda did the chords for a while before the band joined in. Sounded good!
It'd be great if they did more things like that, varied the songs up more; it's been ten years of playing them since the reunion, time to take some liberties!

I'd prefer to hear the new songs (Jaime ? Ring ?), or the old "discarded" ones like Hangwire, Trompe, Palace, Letter, All over the world, stormy, happening, bird, motorway (which made its comeback, then was dropped from the setlist... why????)... and so many others ... rather than hearing the usual ones played differently !

I'd like both actually, different or extended versions of songs and the lesser played tracks.
Who knows why some songs get dropped. Maybe it's not as much fun for them to play coupled with the (lack of) audience reaction. Maybe they just forget about them. |

Joey answered that question in an interview (thanks to a member of this forum). I asked if we'll get to hear all those "unplayed" songs one day. His answer was that he was pretty sure their setlist is what the audience wants to hear. And that's it. He's right... The audience wants to hear the greatest hits. And that's what the Pixies have been playing for more than 10 years now. Greatest hits.
I'm always happy when they play fabulous songs like stormy, manta ray (the fast one), is she weird, motorway, ana... they did it a few times in the recent years. But the audience didn't like them, so they were discarded. Sigh...
