One thing that strikes me is how different the Pixies are in interviews.
In the old time, only BF and Kim spoke. For Kim, there are several videos online where it is obvious that she is reluctant to speak, certainly because of BF, and then other instances, mainly in the UK press, where she was all over the place. Also there were times when you could hardly distinguish between what she and BF said, as if one was reusing nearly word by word something the other had already said in a previous interview. Sometimes it gives the impression that Kim tells to herself: "Kim, try to match Charles' intellectual and seriousness standards instead of fooling around and embarrass him with your nonsense and trashy humor".
The fact that now David and Joey speak a lot seems to be more than just the introduction of some democracy in the band. In articles and in Fool The World Joey is described as an extremely shy and introvert guy, a man of (very) few words, even in the studio. This has changed a lot.
I also have the impression that BF has changed, but only on the surface. He has always been very private, reluctant to discuss personal matters and in many occasions to speak at all. In the old days, there seemed to be a silver bullet though: launching him on a general subject he was interested in. He would then speak, seriously, and say very interesting things. Then, over time he managed to find a composure in front of journalists. Exhibiting self confidence, coolness and using humor to avoid exposing himself. The bad side is that, in my opinion, he communicates more than he speaks. Sometimes he starts on a subject and stops abruptly, by a joke or a quick conclusion that seems to equate to a "whatever...". |

They are always hit or miss with interviews. Joey always seems one step from insulting someone, and comes off as a dude that trusts no one. Dave genuinely does seem happy to be there, or at least relieved to be doing this instead of being almost homeless and strung out. BF just comes off like a dude that has done so many damn interviews that he just says what he needs to. Plus, after Pixies he has seen his status as an artists slip into the "cult hero" area, where I'm sure the interview requests were lesser with each project. Dude just probably gives zero fucks now and steers things where he wants.
I'd rather hear something like that song by song breakdown of Indie Cindy than any normal interview of him and the guys. All the interviews posted usually have some tidbit that sticks out, but usually those are related to the recording process, individual song info, or drama stuff relating to Kim/KimS/critics. |
