There exist hundreds of Pixies covers, but in my opinion only a portion are really worth it. The most usual trap is staying too close to the original. This accounts for 80% of the attempts. The other option, reinterpreting the original in a different style, requires a minimum of talent, but when it works it can really be great.
Here is a (first?) batch of my favorite Pixies covers.
Where Is My Mind is by far the most covered song, but usually these covers suck big. I have a soft spot for the one by Raz Ohara: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s9XJ7jyVVc
Then there is the one by THePETEBOX: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhjA2nvVD7U
And the total transformation by M.I.A.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CYa7nf4Aig
The very old vinyl-only version of Gouge Away by Hayden might be the closest one might ever listen of a Pixies cover by Nirvana. Very intense. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVSXvbsT_eo
The Norwegian Hanne Hukkelberg totally reinvented Break My Body, making it an intimate and heartbreaking song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJg53ZCWCf0
There is of course the a cappella version of Mr Grieves by TV On The Radio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1k6dD3WAP0
And this more recent version on the Undercover Pixies tribute album (here in a live rendition): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzODvanhclE
Controversial I guess, but why not a MOR version of the the most accessible Pixies song, Here Comes Your Man by Meaghan Smith? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vVDyceJurM
This must be the only occurence, I have to admit that I prefer Bowie's version of Cactus to the original one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te2-zTHSzCk
There are many others, but enough for now.

Have to admit I have never heard a cover of a Pixie's song I really really like. Maybe its because the originals mean too much to me. But that Raz Ohara is pretty good. The Pixies were excellent at covering other bands though. Evil Hearted You, I've been waiting for you, I can't forget, great stuff. |

A local bar where my band used to play alot had a Halloween show a-la Phish, and some local artists put on a Pixies mask for the night. The lead singer was the sound-guy there for a long time. They definitely hit some weird notes once in awhile, but overall they're more than convincing, particularly considering they are not really a band, they just knocked this together for this show. They keep getting better as it goes on. Definitely not hacks.

Hi Brickisred, actually there is a classical song called "The Sicilian" that was composed long before the Surftones. The Surftones' version itself is a cover of sorts.

Here's a brand new Velouria cover that I think is really good. Very dreamy though, you have to be into that.

These guys, The By Gods, are slightly audacious, trying to pull off a Cactus cover after Bowie. It's not "the best", but it's quite listenable, and brand new (5 views as of posting). https://youtu.be/MW-txygxOYQ |

That's not bad at all actually. Credit to them. Great song though. Stick to it's simplicity and you shouldn't go far wrong.

I just re-read this and see that I was talking covers in the wrong direction. I may be biased but I actually think that some of the contributors to our FB.net cover albums did better than the big-name covers listed above.

True, can't recall most of them unfortunately(just bad memory, nothing to do with the covers themselves) but I liked zenEQ's River Euphrates and the piano arrangement, especially the intro, on the Where is my Mind cover was fantastic.
It was a long time ago too but I remember having a blast when I discovered the cover of Trompe Le Monde on the Japanese Pixies Tribute album, kind of a symphonic post rock version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGtJgrbLtSI |

Couple of years ago I went to The Rat Pack piano bar in Edinburgh, and this guy happened to be playing that night.
http://www.ratpackpianobars.com/event/details/marc-mowbray/
Marc Mowbray, he takes requests so I requested some Pixies and as it turned out he was a huge fan as well, so he played not one Pixies cover but five, on the piano!
Where is my Mind? Hey! Here Comes Your Man, Gigantic and All Over The World was the selection. Bit of an unusual one at the end, he totally nailed them all.
