Or it could just be a pet name for Magdalena. |

loving this tune!
I needed something to eat I took a walk down the street I came to 318 Saw my sweet Magdalene
Magdalena you're the meanest Magdalena you're the leanest Magdalena sweet Magdalene
I went down deep in her hive One year just turned into five Night came and then it was gone How did you get so strong?
Magdalena just between us You’re the meanest and the leanest Magdalena how you get so strong?
Magdalena Magdalena Magdalena Magdalena
And then we started to drag Me and my Maggie Mag Mag I begged her please no no no She said you got to go
Magdalena just between us You’re the meanest Magdalena Magdalena you're the meanest Magdalena Magdalena Magdalena Magdalena

According to some interview that I'm too lazy to search for, Magdalena is about an asteroid named 318. This is supposedly where the Pixies stayed on their journeys in space to the Planet of Sound before they came back to Earth. This is all part of some narrative that Gil Norton used to inspire the band. The asteroid 318 is real but BF chose to name it Magdalena 318.

EP-2 - Track by Track
Magdalena
BLACK FRANCIS: We all like the song as it is right now, but I think we really want to play it in a big room with a loud P.A. We really want to get it to a ZZ Top kind of zone. We’re kinda waiting for that moment. It’s basically a blues-shape with a couple of left turns that I’m quite proud of. To me it’s a blues song with a Beatles-esque left turn. There are a lot of self-referential words. Like many of the lyrics (I write) they’re self-referential to the Pixies.
JOEY SANTIAGO: This song is where I featured my Moog guitar. It was just so atmospheric and we had these weird Moog pedals that sounded like water. We were just going for it: we were just going for the atmosphere on that one. It was a very mood-based sound, not based on any lyrics or anything.
DAVID LOVERING: One of my favorites, maybe tied with “Indie Cindy.” It’s cool the way it flows; and, again, a very simplistic song. Going back to the early days, like on “Come On Pilgrim,” that’s when I was trying to be Neil Peart and just all over the place. As time went on there were less and less fills and I think with this song you can hear that I’m just playing the beat and accompanying the song for what it is and this song exemplifies that. It’s about being true to the song, and this is pretty, simple, cool and moving.
is fbf saying that this song and other songs on ep1 and ep2 are metaphors/analogies for the pixies experience?

i really like that the themes and narrative is a continuation of bossanova and planet of sound.... i'm loving these eps more and more each day. peel back the layers!

i wonder as well since fbf is so into puzzles, riddles, math....that there is something more to the ep plan than just releasing over an extended time?....that once all these eps come together there will be added riddles to be discovered. maybe, maybe not? but whatever the case may be at least there is new awesome music!

Why is the song called Magdalena on the vinyl and Magdalena 318 on the BMI list?

Maybe they needed to change it at the last minute for some oscure legal reason ? I know people sells the "right" to name stars. So maybe some crazy fools are selling asteroid names & the right to use them...? Just guessing.

Or maybe just second thoughts... 318 may have sounded too geeky, whilr Magdalena alone was more canon, like Havalina, Ana, Rosa, Cecilia...

The name Magdalena is also real. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/318_Magdalena
I think the title with the 318 is better, especially after having read BF's explanation about the song's double entendre. But then again I'm nerdy enough that I could probably be a character in "Big Bang Theory". |
