Interesting how hostile Joey seems to the notion of K Shatts being an official component of the Pixies...sort of runs counter to the tone Frank has taken. Wonder if this will be a source of tension down the line. |

Yeah, he certainly makes it clear that she's no replacement for Deal. The Psycho shower scene inspiring Joey's Dead riff is an interesting titbit! Bernard Herrmann has officially inspired Pixies! |

Sometimes it is how a question is asked, or the tone implied that results in such a response.
Also, this band is notorious for being misquoted, or for their own vocal tone to come across incorrectly in print.
That said, I think it has been clear from the start to those of us who understand the legality behind "official membership in a band," that Kim Shattuck is merely "joining them for this tour."
She is only in some of the promo photos of the group (not most), and to my knowledge has never been at or quoted in any of the official, published interviews since she became associated with the band.
FBF has merely said that at some point it may make sense for her to take part in recording sessions, and if so, then he looks forward to working with her because she is a good musician and a nice person and has a strong voice of her own.
They've also been clear that the door remains open to Kim Deal.
Kim S. is a contract musician helping them out for a set period of time, which may or may not be extended.
Kim D. was (and remains) a member of the band - albeit one who may or may not be an active participant in future shows or recordings.
I think Joey was just trying to make that distinction clear.
They know Kim S. and liked her enough to bring her onboard for these two tours - but I'm sure every single one of them in their own way misses Kim Deal greatly and the whole thing seems weird and unnatural without her there - even if a certain type of tension and/or instability has left with her.
Kim Deal is a major component of this band's sound and almost their entire adult lives. They know that and it can never change. She left without warning of her own accord, not because she was pushed out, and as long as she was sincerely enthusiastic about moving forward with the band rather than just treading water, it sounds like she'd be welcomed back immediately.

Thompson made it clear from the start: They are not replacing Deal. Instead Kim S. is a "guest" bass player/back-up singer.
The more I see of the Deal's LSXX tour, the more I believe she did it because Kelley, Jim, Josephine, or all three, were having money problems.
Will Kim D. be back? I'm old enough to know a person should never say "never". |
