Hi David , how was your European tour so far? It is going great , especially considering that we were two years without playing and we have a new bass player. We are fortunate that the concerts are sounding good .
You will know that you have two sold out in Madrid. Yes , yes, I know and I love , love Madrid. You are quite sold outs we've done on this tour , another reason to feel lucky indeed.
Do you notice different vibrations on the tour you started after your meeting in 2004? To tell you the truth , I think audiences are reacting the same, with the same intensity and emotion. When we finished we asked encores , so everything goes through normal channels lol! We did not think people still have wanted to come back and see us again.
Throwing your " EP1 " through your website we sumáis to current evidence that the major labels are necessary, but not essential. Well, that debate is really complex , what I can say is that we have entered into the world of management label, and when things work is fun, and makes you feel that you are not out of date , you adapt to the times. The system we used worked really well .
And so ... Especially considering it was a bestseller in iTunes even though it was available on your website for free . Our reaction was like " wow" . We looked amazing. The iTunes has been very good for us , put our music on your home page and that certainly helped . We participate in the London festival and it was great .
Kim Deal recorded some bass lines for " EP1 " but then left and had to re-record . How was the whole process ? It was very good, and I think it's because we took our time to prepare good recording, almost three years. We went to Rockfield Studios in Wales, and there everything went very quietly , very slowly. As you say, Kim recorded five songs, but then he left and re-recorded parts with Simon ( " Dingo" Archer ) . It was hard to see her go , but the process took its course and ... you know? I think this is the first time I really enjoyed a recording of the Pixies. I always hated the study bores me greatly that quest for perfection . But this time I enjoyed every minute , I felt I was playing really well and I felt very comfortable .
Does Kim march was especially hard for any of you ? For you , for example? I say that because you are in the Pixies more or less because of it. Yes , her husband knew me, I had worked for him, and where it all started . That job changed my life forever ,haha! When Kim told us he was leaving was a shock all the way, we did not expect and was very hard to digest impact . After his departure there were three days of intense emotions , doubts , do not know what to do , in fact to think about dissolving the group , but we did a lot of anger having started this new phase. So we bite the bullet and keep working . The pain was gradually going .
What is the reason for his departure ? Do not think it's just the return of The Breeders . What The Breeders influenced , no doubt, but Kim had Pixies less like us, I guess. When he began to tell us we knew immediately that was very serious , that there was no turning back and that Kim would no longer play with the Pixies anymore.
I imagine you have Kim in the band was too good to be true . I mean ... she has already had problems with this in the past . All members have had problems with the band , ours and theirs were not surmountable . When four people get together in a band with time problems occur inevitably . The key is how you deal with them .
And in your case , how has it been playing in a band as iconic ? Do you know ? From my point of view is very difficult to see , if not impossible . I do not see myself as a member of an iconic band. Just play the drums with other types . I understand that others see us , it's like when I think of , for example , Rush , and I say " oh God, how good they are, are huge, are legend." But as to myself , I could never see it. As can be seen from outside .
Regarding the progress of Kim ... I think now people are less suspicious of meetings with missing limbs. I mean, in the 70 or 80, when he met a band without a founding member , many fans rejected him . That is interesting. I never thought , but if you see it so there is some truth to it. And you made me think ... Yeah, maybe people are now more like " I do not care so and so missing , I see them live ." Is what we are seeing in the reactions of the audience of this tour .
Recording new material has given extra credibility to the tour. Definitely . This meeting has already taken nine years, but had no new songs so far. A couple of years ago we realized that we had seven on the road without saving. And think back to being a band again, with all of the law , we should offer something new to fans . When we announced our return all our fans wanted to see us , but if we published anything , that excitement may be diluted . This EP has been a sign that this continues .
Even there are many people who have not heard your albums , and has known you now with this EP . I hope so !
There has been strong difference of opinion on the EP . Did you expect this to happen ? No. Maybe I expected someone to say that these new songs do not sound like Pixies , in negative plan . It might not sound like " Trompe le Monde " , but it definitely sounds like a progression of the Pixies . In fact , among our 90 disks can find big differences in sound. We have always had an obsession with the changes. And there will continue . That this album is titled " EP1 " no accident, there will be more EP's in the future and not have to be like this .
Did you read the criticism of Pitchfork ? Yes , I did.
Did you get some conclusion ? Her, or I seemed merely destructive ? No, I think it was destructive . But reading it was like "wow, have been really hard on us." And when Pitchfork get aggressive , they get very aggressive and put a real stab you ,haha!
Little damage can make them anymore ... By the way , the new nominees for the Hall of Fame Rock'n'Roll are Deep Purple , Yes , Kiss, Peter Gabriel , Chic , Meters , Link Wray , Paul Butterfield ... and Nirvana . Who would you vote ? Oh , God ! That is hard, lol! Mmmm ... I could not choose ... I will say Nirvana , who were very nice people with uslol!
Finally, what do you think malditismo halo surrounding the Pixies ? Is it real , or is part of the legend ? I remember the first time we got together . It was really exciting , really believed in our songs , we thought we were doing something new and good , but not that many people would like . That surprised us and left us , and we were people who were not made #8203;#8203;for the mainstream, did not see it as our habitat and our natural attitude perhaps estancáramos helped us in terms of commercial success. But we are very happy and we are very fortunate with our story , which is actually very similar to most bands . Not think we're particularly damned ... Well, a little bit, haha! |
