Interesting theory, but I do think Frank does kind of plan his style. Not as a writer, but the production and arrangement can't be written in the stars.

Seems like he tries to get the best of what each collaborator brings to the table every time he has an opportunity to record, honestly. I kinda believe it's very likely that "just" following his strong intuition / instinct(apart from his musical abilities) and find relevant persons to work with, along with a strong source material was enough to produce most of the great stuff he made. Sure he obviously has some defined style but this can also just be the product of different tastes / influences with his artistic choices.
