The critical reaction to ep-1 seems generally more negative than positive, so I browsed a few random forums to read what Joe/Joanne public thought. I found the most fascinating posts were from people who either never liked Pixies at all or just thought them ok but nothing special. I must enjoy getting annoyed or something. Anyway, from the 4 or 5 forums I looked at, the average reaction to the new music was meh/hostile.

I like the ep very much btw, including the much maligned 'Another Toe in the Ocean'!

Here's an example

I was just reading a Weezer-forum, they like it over there. And they hate Weezer, so...

I like this idea.

From a Pearl Jam forum, mostly positive but there wasn't too much. Scroll down a little and discussion of the new e.p. begins.

I've seen a lot of negative reaction to EP1 around on the web as well, although interspersed with a few 'it's great, the critics are wrong' remarks (I am certainly in the the latter category). If the Pixies end up returning to being a more a cult propostion as a result that's OK by me. Despite being critical darlings in their heyday they really were'nt that popular (but were well known) by 'learned' music fans and I had plenty of friends at that time telling me they were a load of shite. I reckon there'll be a re-evalaution of the new music as time goes by. I'm certainly addicted to EP1 and discovering new bits to relish every few listens. I am also really looking to hearing the recorded versions of Hexe and Magdalena. The only reason I am going to these upcoming concerts is to hear the new tunes.

I tried that and got pissed so I quit. Seems like 90% of the general public hates it.

While not as popular as let's say, Tom Petty, I think as a live act, the Pixies will fall into a similar category, not musically, not performance wise, but with audience expectation. Most people there to hear the "hits", Where is My Mind, Monkey, Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, etc. while a minority are there for the new songs and rarely played ones.

I hope I'm wrong and that audiences respond well to the new songs, I imagine it would be disappointing to play Bagboy and get a muted response and then see everyone go nuts for Monkey. And the more responsive the crowd, the better the show.

I was talking about allthingsweezer.com. I guess some old RWA read it and webmaster Karl used to post. The official board on weezer.com is now called RWA, I believe
