Just a heads up Pixies are playing a session at Maida Vale studios on 26th. You can apply for a free pair of tix on the 6music website - like the Pixies lottery! Appearing on the Steve Lamaq show apparently.

I won the lottery for this and am going! Didn't manage to get tickets for Hammersmith or Brixton so incredibly pleased (and relieved - eager to see v2.0) :)

This made me giggle.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03blbt4

quote:
Thursday sees 6Music broadcasting from the BBC's legendary Maida Vale studios, for the very first 6Music: In Concert performance.

Joining us will be a band who shaped the sound of Alternative Rock. Having sold just under 2 million albums worldwide, they are among rock music's greatest pioneers. Single-handedly spawning the grunge movement of the 1990s, their unique mix of punk, pop and surf rock inspired an entire generation of musicians, and embodied 90's alternative Rock.

They are - Pixies

Pixies are - Black Francis (vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar) and David Lovering (drums), alongside recent addition Kim Shattuck (bass, vocals), who replaced founding member Kim Deal in 2013

The band released their first seminal debut album 'Surfer Rosa' in 1988. Second album Boolittle followed in 1989 and reached number 8 in the UK. The album featured the singles 'Here Comes Your Man', Monkey Gone To Heaven' and Debaser'. 'Bossamova' arrived in 1990, reaching numbr 3 in the UK charts and was followed a year later by their final album 'Trompe Le Monde'.

After splitting acrimoniously in 1992, they reformed in 2004 to wide acclaim.

The band released the new single 'Bagboy' in July this year, two weeks after announcing the departure of bassist Kim Deal. They chat with Steve, and play a career spanning set after 6p.

Boolittle? Bossamova? Looks like it was a liquid lunch at BBC radio today.

"Single-handedly spawning the grunge movement of the 1990s" sounds pretty idiotic too...

Didnt get tickets but sounds great, loved the energy in Break My Body, Ive Been Tired (forgot what great lyrics this song has!), Isla Del Encanto and the new songs. Good to hear Havalina, band sound great - so much intensity, think ill be forced to pay tout prices for Glasgow gig.

For those not there - they also did "In Heaven" into "Andro Queen" after the R6 broadcast for inclusion on Jo Wiley's R2 show. Was pretty damn special there, at front between Joey and Charles. Red button Oct 11th (I think) - look out for guy in front of me doing genius hand jiving and air drumming. Kim on great form tonight, much more comfortable looking than at iTunes. Joey astounding.

Love the mix/ sound on this... Sounds really 'in your face'. Velouria was huge, and Indie Cindy sounds really good. To name just a few (still listening right now). Makes you wonder if EP1 would have been received slightly differently if it sounded closer to this. Either way, this is a great gig!

Wow, what a show !
A bit rusty on Bone machine due to Dave not hearing anything but it was so loud being there!
In my opinion they're sounding a lot fresher and better than a lot of the 04-06 shows.
the new stuff is so good live,

The band sounds good, but who the hell is doing their sound?? J's guitar is consistently too low across numerous, different recordings.

It can sometimes be extremely difficult to mix a very loud band properly for broadcast.

The fact that Joey's guitar is so loud in the actual room means that his amps are bleeding through all the vocal mics in addition to whatever close-miking is going on with his rig.

Often, engineers err on the side of turning the main guitar mic down in the broadcast mix, out of fear that the leads will overpower the rest of the instruments and vocals.

That's also why straight "board tapes" are almost always way heavy on vocals, kick drum and acoustic guitars compared to other instruments, with lead guitars sometimes sounding almost non-existent.

Those are the elements of the mix which need the most "boost" through the PA, as opposed to holding their own in the venue via their stage volume...

Having listened to the radio broadcast I think it's a great mix. The seperation between guitars is nice to hear, given how close / blended the sound from the amps was from the stage. Waaaay better sound than Later with Jools Holland or iTunes Festival. 'What Goes Boom', 'Isla De Encanta' and 'I've Been Tired' sound ed aggressive as hell at the gig and that really comes across.
