For me this is how the new material stacks up:
1. Bag Boy
2. Indie Cindy
3. Andro Queen
4. What Goes Boom
5. Another Toe In the Ocean
They're all better than Bam Thwok IMHO. I strongly suspect that studio versions of Classic Masher and Greens and Blues may blow past all these though....

Fuck that. I'm going to give them all marks out of 7 so as not to give out the impression that I particularly like any of them much. Here goes.
Bagboy - 3
Andro Queen - 3.5
The toe song - nil point
Indy Cindy - 5 (I sort of like it but only as a non-Pixies song)
The 4th one what goes Bloom- Can't remember, the average of the previous 3 or 4
Bam thwok - 4.9 (ooooh controversial)
I altered the maximum value you can place so as to distort your perception of time and numbers |

Indie Cindy - 8 Love it all
Andro Queen - 7 Solid, if repetitious. Like the mellow approach but what the hell is he saying with the Spanish/? part??
What Goes Boom - 7 (This is the most Pixies-sounding to me.
Bagboy - 6 (Can't stand the "Cover your mouth" repetition in the verses. Makes it cheesier to me. Joey's guitars though, badass.
Another Toe - 5 They made a mistake starting the track off so abruptly with the chorus, which isn't great. If they started off instrumental until the first verse starts, I think it would go over better. Once it gets into the verse, the rest is solid to me.
Bam Thwok - 3 Never thought much of it, tbh. Seemed like a throwaway. |

This may seem like ludicrous high scoring to some, or blind fanboy-ism, but whatever. I think this stuff is exceptional and fully holds up to the old Pixies material. I listen to a hell of a lot of music across the board of genres and this is some of the best modern music I have heard, period. My interest in Frank Black music was waning, just a tiny bit, after years of inconsistent material. I'm now completely rejuvenated as a fan. |
