Your task for a week..or two
I return home a war veteran, yeah right, TOMORROW!!! Actually a very tanned and horny man is more like it. Anyway, that is neither here nor there. (pardon me I'm a little drunk at the moment)
Your job is to suggest at least 3 CD's I've missed that have been released this year. Its 2003 for those not sure, for a time I wasn't. The reason I'm giving you two weeks is I'm gonna be getting my freek on before I check this post or site again.
(edit) Oh yeah it's my Birthday on the 1st. Wish a brother a happy one. :)

Thomas-
Where were you posted in Greece? i'm going back to the "homeland" in late July...pretty stoked, its always a good time there.
I hope you are not bringing back any Nana Mouskouri, Yanni, Anna Visi, or any Greek pop music for that matter. That shit is skanky horrible |

Have a happy one brother. Best so far this year.... it's so hard to keep up with all the music I should have heard over the past 20 or so years, let alone new releases this year, but I'll give it a try.
New Pornographers - Electric Version - wonderfull record. Happy, fun, melodic, a tasty treat. July 2nd, live @ Amigos!
Broken Social Scene- You Forgot It In People - this came out last year in Canada, but the yanks and Euros won't get it till this year. just a great album. lush, diverse, sad, beautiful, happy, everything. great great record.
Maintoba - Up In Flames - not always my cup of tea, but some really great sounds to be found here, kinda like a more sampled, more beat oriented My Bloody Valentine. Bloody good, too.
Radiohead - Hail to the Theif - come on, this had to be on here.
Deerhoof- Apple O' - I've only just begun with this record, but I'm really enjoying it so far. It's a little more accessible than their last one, but still crazy and weird and great.
That's all I can think of so far. Of course, if you haven't heard it yet, SMYT is incredible. Truly incredible. There should be more great stuff this year, like the new GBV record in August. We'll see how these records hold up at the end of the year. Cheers and happy birthday Thomas.

Indeed, happy birthday, Mr. T. I can think of many worse places to be stationed than Greece, that's for sure. Anyway, I'm not sure I would list everything that Speedy M did, partially because I either haven't heard it enough to say or at all, or I wouldn't put it on a MUST BUY list, but I suppose that my list might consist of the following:
1) Spoon- Kill the Moonlight - I can't remember if this record was released this year or late last (I suspect last, actually, but just in case...), this record is a must own. Spoon has moved up to my coveted number three spot in favourite bands of all time, behind FB & the Pixies, and you should certainly give them a listen if you haven't already. You really can't go wrong with any of their albums to date.
2) New Pornographers- Electric Version. - A spectacular second release that puts their first, Mass Romantic, to shame. Great, upbeat, amazing melodies, probably one of the more exciting records released this year. Looking forward to seeing them on Wednesday.
3) Broken Social Scene- You Forgot It In People - Don't let the god-awful cover fool you, it's everything Speedy M said and more.
So in retrospect, I'm just agreeing with what he said about two of the albums, adding a third, and taking off three. The Radiohead should probably be on my list too, but I can't agree with him more than twice per message as per my unwritten promise to FB.net. Plus, I enjoy the albums I listed far more than Up In Flames or Hail to the Thief. Haven't heard Apple O'. |

Yes sir, Kill the Moonlight came out last year. It was a tumultuous (and by that I mean freaking aweseome) month for music. August, 2002. Spoon - Kill the Moonlight, Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights, Frank Black - Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop. What a month.... |

Oh, I should add:
the Notwist - Neon Golden - really, really good record. lots of unique sounds, crosses several genre boundaries and comes out sounding great. I'm pretty sure it only came out in North America this year. |

1) Holopaw - s/t - a laid-back, acoustic type album. John Orth is the singer, who appeared on a few songs on the Ugly Casanova record.
2) Therapy? - High Anxiety - I dunno if anyone on this board listens to this band, but I think they're pretty cool. This is a really good loud rock and roll album, what else can I say?
3) White Stripes - Elephant - this may in fact be my favorite White Stripes album. It's pretty awesome.
That's my list... there's new Ween coming out soon, which should be pretty awesome. |

I've thoroughly enjoyed these CDs three:
1)Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell (this one may lick your ears) 2)Libertines - Up the Bracket (this one may liberate your ears) 3)Cradle of Filth - Damnation and a Day (this one may hurt fragile ears) |

I used to really like Therapy? when I was in school. I dont know where your from GHutt but they were really big in Ireland, being an Irish band and all. I'm surprized they were still going when I heard they were realsing new stuff. They're not really my cup of tea anymore though, I would have thought Andy Cairns was a rock dinosaur by now, but he still nows how to churn it out! Have you got Trouble Gum?

What about Kaiti Garbi? :) I actually don't mind some of her stuff, as far as Greek-pop goes. It helps that I don't understand most of what she's singing, though... |

Hellacopters - By the Grace Of God....this album is SO good. Sounds like a brilliant mix of Turbonegro and the Foo Fighters. The production is stellar and Nicke's voice is the best that it's ever been. I was shocked at how good this album was.
Supersuckers - Motherfucker's Be Trippin'....if you dig rock n' roll, you surely already know that you cant go wrong with the Supersuckers.
The Kenmores - Lorpor.....The Kenmores are the BEST unknown band in the land. They are my favorite live band of all time. Everyone of their records is a must have. Unfortunately LORPOR is not out yet (should be pretty soon), but I got a copy off of the band and it is fantastic. You should really check out some Kenmores stuff though. They have 2 full lengths and 1 EP, all 3 different, yet very good.
Turbonegro - Scandinavian Leather.....once again, another brilliant rock album by the Norwegian rock gods. Not as good as Apocalypse Dudes, but still DEFINITELY a necessary purchase.

I dont know if Zoomer by Schneider TM will be much good to you. But it's the only thing I bought this year, everything else I go off friends and predates our beloved 2003!

new pornographers - electric version throwing muses - throwing muses kristin hersh - the grotto stephen malkmus - pig lib cat power - you are free
Disapointment so far is the white stripes album. Itīs very similar to the last one and the songs are very predictable, theyīve been done many times before. I wonīt even bother comparing frank and the white stripes in terms of songwriting ability, that would just be embarasing. Itīs fun and everything but white blood cells is more than enough white stripes for me. I like that song with the sliding guitar, though, 'i want to warm your motherīs heart'.

I wasn't crazy about the new Malkmus..thought the first was better.
The new Muses hasn't grabbed me, and i'm not crazy about Kristin's solo effort either. =( - i love almost everything else of hers tho. |
