http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hWgWqWEDsk Here's her vocal track for her "Kids in America"cover with The Muffs.I like her voice obviously more raspy than Miss Deal and I've noticed she plays the bass just like she plays guitar, closer to the fretboard or over it at times which definetly gives a different "punky" sound.I'm a hardcore Kim Deal fan and I want to wish all the best to the original lineup members and the new Pixie Kim Shattuck."Life To The Pixies" and have a fun tour and new release Soon:-)

Kim Shattuck is best represented by one of her own songs. I offer up this, from the last Muffs album:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-95YiV82YA

And here's a li'l something that I wrote elsewhere on the big old smelly internet awhile back (about the first Muffs album) that sums up my own feelings about her work:
---------

Best I can figure, one reason why The Muffs never hit it big in the 90s was that they simply didn't fit in with the whiners, the slackers, the victims, the co-dependents, and the bellybutton-ponderers of the day's American alternative rock. On every Muffs album, Kim Shattuck screams her head off at people like that. In the first song here, she smashes a shiftless boyfriend to pieces. The next track is a triumphant "glad he's gone" break-up song... and the rocking and melodic kiss-offs keep on coming. The radio didn't want 'em, but I sure do. Come springtime, I've got Kim Shattuck shouting through my car speakers twenty times a week.

Otherwise, The Muffs had everything: catchy hooks all over the place, a relentless guitar pop drive that you can jump around to all night long, pounding major label production, and a crush-worthy frontwoman who sounds like no one else. The songs might all sound alike on that first passive listen, but after a few blasts in the car, especially if you're pissed off at someone, the hooks arise and the band's blistering love of life carries you through. And they'd get even better on later albums.

Thanks for posting about her Frank Thallasocracy cover and The Amps Pacer cover Jason never heard those and it made my day :-) Glad you are an oldschool fan of her.

Thanks for the links. I didnt know much re: Kim S or the Muffs but I likee. I def luv her style and edgy-ness. My, how hearing the new song gets me very excited. Youse was right all along........Charles' songwriting and vocals and JOEY! make it happen. Now cant wait for all the new stuff plus a tour in the Northeast: NYC? NJ? Philly? Mass? go.

Just 2 questions, please (sorry if these have been discussed elsewhere):

1) Is Kim S on the new album and/ or Kim D and/or Jeremy?

2) From what I'm hearing Kim S seems very cool and musically what i like....hard, gritty. But is it me (& this is not a critique at all cuz she sounds fine and Frank & Joey are the main guys)...but is her voice kinda weaker than Deal's & not as smooth? Just a ques. Thanks!

BF said KD doesn't feature in the new songs. Ding Archer played bass and Jeremy did the 'bagboy' harmony. Elsewhere it's been said there will be no album.. (Maybe the songs will be released online and fans can 'album-ise' them as they see fit.)

Her voice is a bit gravelly alright but Deal's voice isn't as smooth as it once was either. Reckon she'll do more than fine though.

Thanks alot Maha. Wow....I thought a full album was coming. I'm just too old school, I guess........love to have the "newest" album/cd of any band I love and that they're "touring the new cd" haha. Like 10-12 NEW songs in a CD 'Package'.

Kim Deal is Kim Deal and Kim Shattuck is Kim Shattuck.

I love Kim Shattuck's voice. She's a snarling punk rocker, but with a soft side when that's necessary. She's smart and perceptive and sounds like a real person.

i think for now, she's only replacing kim deal on the upcoming tour.
nowhere has she been introduced as "the new band member" (yet).

this is the statement:
quote:
Please welcome Kim Shattuck.
Kim will be playing bass guitar / backing vocals on the upcoming tour announced today. You may know Kim from LA band The Muffs and previously from The Pandoras.
We are delighted that she will be joining us on stage.

Another data point: on their latest iTunes Music Festival performance announcement, their photo has just Frank, Joey and David. No fourth member.

I doubt she'll be a full member any time soon. Kim Deal was always a leader personality, and so is Kim Shattuck... but Frank likes to be captain on his own ship.

... Net yet conviced by her vocal performance on these songs and the duets with Black Francis (well, not utterly convinced by the latter's performance either) anyway, they look very happy teenagers together, I hope they prepared these shows very seriously and that she will be heard faithfully. As mentionned by the band itself, an ethereal trace of Kim Deal will always be part of Pixies and their sound and that's a good thing and I hope the new material will keep on sounding like Pixies. I would be curious to see if her absence would increase her "presence" or if it will underline the conceptual role of Kim Deal in the Pixies' sound formula and therefore minimize her actual role as an individual in that strange band.
Oh, there would be a lot of things to write about that Kim thing with psychological perpsectives in the context of the band's history. A serious article or an essay... prefaced by Violet Clark ;)

Anyway, best wishes to this charming new Kim, it must be a very exciting moment in her life as a musician in show bizz. Who hasn't dreamt of being a Pixie with the other Pixies ? (and especially that one...)

Yeah hopefully she was just unrehearsed which was why she was out of pitch. I don't care though, I am sure they will work out the kinks.

I'm not sure I understand what you said. By "underline" are you saying that her "conceptual role" is that of a female singer, and any female singer can replace her in the band? Or did you mean to type undermine?

Regardless, while I'm sure Kim Shattuck will do a good job playing and singing, bringing a different energy to the concerts; Kim Deal's role in the Pixies is sacrosanct. Her voice, bass playing aesthetic* and chemistry with the fellows combined to create a unique energy.

I'm still very curious to hear Kim S. with the band; it was one thing when she sat in on some songs; another to be part of a full fledged tour. I wonder how her bass playing will impact with everyone else. I'm sure she's going to play how she plays and since everyone brings their own unique style as a musician, she'll energize the songs in her own way.

It's sort of similar to the Catholics; their skill (and the larger band) achieved some excellent versions of Pixies tunes.

I'm sure she's free to play as she naturally does and the result will make for some exciting and interesting performances.

* see Kim discuss her bass playing; an interesting snippet:

I'm pretty sure I read an interview with Dave, circa the Doolittle Album tour when he said that he'll come roaring out the gate during Debaser and Kim will stand her ground with her tempo, creating an interesting contrast. This is the sort of thing I'll be curious to hear; will we get faster versions of songs?
I'm fine with that; actually, I quite like it when a band plays a bit faster in concert; I've got the studio version at home. I loved when they ripped through Someting Against You or Isla live, etc.

I love a fresh take in concert, especially when they extend a song.

Again, I hope they release official recordings; I'm sure the first show, while not reaching the anticipation levels of the first reunion concert (and how could it?) will still be heavily anticipated, especially with the potential for new songs and rarities.

That's what my question meant. But it is this kind of questions that do not require any answer. Thanks for bringing my attention to the word "undermine", I never used it before. Of course Kim's replacement is a big challenge for the band, it will be hard, "it's impossible" but it will be necessary and therefore it will become possible. Think about what happened to the Velvet Underground with John Cale or Roxy Music with Brian Eno... With Pixies something similar has to happen. The question is WHY NOW and HOW IMPORTANT? (It doesn't need any answer).

At the moment I am trying to understand the position of Black Francis as he was the first singer I imitated when I was a teen. It seems that, at last, he is doing what he wanted to have in the early 90's: Pixies without Kim Deal. It's merely an alchemical experience. No offense to anyone. I'm just writing from a fan's point of view who only knows what he read and imagined. Pixies and their songs got tatooed in my mind and altered my soul. The archetypes that became both the band itself and the members are parts of our selves now. We need to live with it. When I became a hardcore fan, there were no internet, no forums and all that, just objects, record shops, imagination, mystery, magic and art... Where have all the good times gone? You needed to meet other fans in reality before understanding that these archetypes you worshipped worked very differently for everyone. You wear the same t-shirt but it is supposed to fit your size. The t-shirt company owes you.
I discovered Pixies in 1993 when they no longer existed. I did not like Kim Deal because she was the nasty girl who led Frank Black to disolve the band. I worshipped Frank Black. I grew up in this cult (i.e. buying his records, learning the lyrics, going to the shows and proselytism). And now, Pixies are popular, I finally admitted I loved Kim Deal, Black Francis is rich and I am happy for Frank Black, little drunk girls sing Where is my Mind at parties (it makes me feel older and wiser). Another atomic disaster is heading soon, and I try to find a way to rejoice, thinking that it would generate other Pop miracles like it did after WW2. Last Splash is 20, Teenager of the Year will be 20 too. Pixies ego issue is making the buzz again. That's fine. It's show bizz, I am not impress by show bizz anymore but I respect those who need show bizz in order to exist and solve their problems in this incarnation while providing songs and music like flowers generate perfume. And I listen to Bagboy, and I hear Kim Deal and I miss Frank Black. I will not see the band this year but I will spy. Nothing has changed except myself, everything has changed then. A History goes on and it is less and less important. Mercury has turned to Hermes. I can still hear voices and see letters that predate all sources of inspiration. I hope I'll be a father soon, maybe before Teenager of the Year is celebrated. I might buy tickets again then.
Excuse my English, I forgave yours.

Thank you for the Music.
