I really wonder what is the code color for the Minotaur limited edition, or if this is totally random.
I have read about six colors: black, white, brown, green, gray and pink.
Mine is pink (#44). I have seen #1147 and #1149 for sale as brown, #948 as green.
This seems to rule out a color being assigned to 600 consecutive numbers...
But maybe I am the only one interested... |

Well, actually with six colors, this would make one for 500 numbers. This would match. However, there seem to also be blue and red boxes. |

didn't they use different colours out of necessity? because they couldn't acquire enough material to make them all in the same colour? i believe i've read that somewhere. this could help explain why the colours aren't nicely divided over the entire release (500 of this colour, so many of that colour, ...), as one might expect if the different colours were planned.
i would guess that they just numbered them, seemingly randomly, without too much thought behind it. but it wouldn't surprise me if this happened per colour (e.g. first all the pink ones, then all the gray ones, etc.)
it's educational |

Which one?
I find it surprising if the number of colors came out of necessity. It seems simpler to go for one or a few colors. I would rather see it as a ploy to get fortunate fans go for more than one copy, just like the 25 random copies with vinyl test pressings.
There is a pink one on ebay, #79. This makes two low numbers with the same color and two around 1150 with the same color as well. |

BTW, would I have had the opportunity to chose a color, I would certainly have opted for a very classical black or grey one. But now I think that the red must really be neat. |

I am trying to gather input from owners of the box.
Anybody to provide the number and color of his box like hammerhands did already?

I feel like posting on an off topic subject, considering the rich news and debates concerning the band.
So here are my findings concerning the limited edition of Minotaur. Note that I contacted Artist In Residence a couple of times and they did not answer me.
Minotaur Lim Ed was conceived as a collector's item, in the short and long term. The idea was not just to make a luxurious box set that big fans will dream to possess, but to create variants and rarity pockets within the 3000 copies in order to boost the collector's market in the years to come.
A+R announced from the begining that there would be 25 random copies of the box set including the test pressings for the five vinyls. These might be the rarest copies of the box set. Maybe.
The content of the box sets vary according the copy you have. The cover of the art book is always the penis drawing over a background, but there are variants: (at least) light grey felt cover with dark grey drawing, light grey felt cover with black drawing, dark grey felt cover with white drawing. In addition, there should be the fur-like cover that can be seen on A+R promo pictures, but I have no evidence it actually exists.
The giclee print at the end of the book vary as well. There might be many of them.
However, the main differences are related to the box color.
The rarest and most valuable one is likely to be a nice looking, uniform pink. It is associated to numbers up to 50.
Then comes a darker pink / burgundy color. Actually there might be two different shades of it. They would be used up to 150 or 200.
After this, there is a special range up to maybe 450, where a variety of "classic" colors are used: black, dark grey, golden brown, dark green.
Then, colors are associated to larger ranges, at least 200, most certainly 250 or 300. Not sure all ranges are of equal size and there could even be small ones associated to some colors. The first of these ranges is associated with a very light shade of pink, close to white. Other colors appearing (not in order) include at least: light grey, red, blue, brown, and again the four "classic" colors. There might be more, like white.
Ranges are not all uniforms: a color may occasionally appear in the range of another color.
Early customers were rewarded with low numbers, most certainly shipped in ascending order. The first ones to pre-order the box set received pink, then dark pink, then classic color boxes. Normally, all the boxes you can purchase right now in new condition should have numbers at least superior to 1500, variations depending on how long they have been stocked by the seller.
I am still trying to collect input (box color/number, book cover). Do not hesitate to contact me. I am more especially trying to sort out if there is one or two shades of dark pink, if they are each associated to ranges and where the "classic" colors start, to identify potentially "new" colors or color variants, to know whether the fur-like book cover exists or not, if there are more variants of the book cover and which colors are used from #2000 ro #3000. More generally, any input can help me refine the range for each color and define if some of them are rarer than others. |
