Does anyone know if there's a recording of this show out there? I was just reading through the archives and came across a review of this concert; it sounds amazing. Multiple people are saying they opened with Into the White; I think a Catholics version of that would be amazing.

That would be news to me, so if so, count me interested!

I'm a bit skeptical of Into the White, I'm thinking that perhaps people confused that with Velvety or meant to say Velvety. At the same time, several people kept saying Into the White. I'm a bit surprised as it's a Kim song but a Catholics version would be great! |

BF wrote the lyrics! He included it on the FBF album iirc. Also, I think he performed it alone during a solo gig as "Black Francis" in the early 90s. The great trobrianders gave me that file a few years back, still appreciated! |

I was there
Floop was without doubt not there
Just before SMYT was released, great show. FB blasted a couple of fanboys at the front mid show who were shouting lyrics back at him for the new unreleased SMYT material whilst he was singing them. They were probably from this forum actually cos we got some boots with Manitoba and so on, previous to this show from here. FB quite rightfully wasn't happy that they were shouting over him, putting him off and pissing the rest of us listeners. Don't fuck with FB when he's onstage was the lesson.
But yeah he did play some excellent stuff that night, see review below
"Frank Black - Camden Underworld (7th July 2003) by: Geordie_Jon Wednesday 24 September 2003 The larger than life conquistador sauntered onto the stage, armed only with a bottle of water and a well-used acoustic guitar, to an almost fervent level of applause and noise. The evening started off rather surprisingly with Charles Michael Kitteridge Thompson IV (Frank Black to the uninitiated) launching headlong into the ‘less well known than others’ Pixies number Into the White (originally on the ‘B’ side of the Pixies’ Here Comes Your Man, with main vocals provided by Kim Deal). This at times scintillating yet enigmatic approach continued for the rest of the evening.
Playing for 90 minutes and one encore, the artist formerly known as Black Francis was clearly a bit grumpy tonight, which was illustrated in one instance where he stopped mid song on Horrible Day (a track from his new album with the Catholics called Show Me Your Tears) with a deathly stare, because he was a tad irritated by a couple of not so young enthusiasts, whom it would appear had been given the night off from their bail hostel duties. Their crime was knowing the words better than he did when accompanying him and breaking his concentration. I think we should put that one down to jet lag, Frank.
Although the Underworld tried its darnedest to hinder the original Man in Black’s performance with its cramped surroundings and tinnitus inducing sound system, Frank still managed to put on a performance still unsurpassed by his contemporaries. Grumpy or not, he managed to appease the stronghold of Pixies fans with, in some cases, reworked renditions of the aforementioned Into the White, Where is My Mind?, Cactus, Caribou, The Holiday Song, Wave of Mutilation, Monkey gone to Heaven, Crackity Jones and Velouria. Although, this amount seemed at times to be part of a quota system with the man himself commenting half way through the night that he’d better play some more Pixies songs as some people were getting a bit restless (that would be me then).
This was not what all the crowd had come to see though, and the faction within the sold out audience who actually prefer his solo work were treated to impressive versions of amongst others: (I want to live on an) Abstract Plain, Bullet, Brackish Boy, All My Ghosts, Western Star, California Bound, My Favourite Kiss and Goodbye Lorraine. To top the night off His Royal Blackness performed his encore with the aptly named Tom Waits cover The Black Rider.
Being warmly greeted by and shaking hands with huge Pixies aficionado Adam Buxton (one half of the Adam and Joe Show) in the bar on the way out (I honestly swear that I’ve never met him before) warmed my cockles no end, so to speak. However, so did the sight of the ‘Icon of a Generation’ Mr Charles Thompson giving a stellar performance with just his guitar for company on a small dimly lit stage to a tightly packed adoring and extraordinarily appreciative audience. And, if ambiguous comments made by the man himself to the media before this gig are to be interpreted correctly, then for the first time in 10 years it may not be inconceivable to see Frank joined on stage in the future again by three certain musicians going by the names of Deal, Santiago and Lovering." |

i like that write up. they only mention Frank's being in a bad mood in passing. if it were written by someone here I bet that would be the focus of the entire article. but Brits understand sometimes you don't feel like putting up with a bunch of bullocks. and really, it wasn't much of a big deal. I know because I was there

Gotta say it's very dissapointing to discover you've been lying the whole time about this. Especially as I never got in to see the man that night. Do you think it was fun for me, catching snippets of the man's performance every time the entrance doors swung open and shut, being pestered by junkies outside while trying to nab tix etc? And now you the whole time lying about being there. Low, floop. Low.
Bullocks? Wha? Bollocks to you sir.

Haha yeah FB wasn't too hard on them, but he had to cut his song mid way and focussed the rooms attention on them. He was funny about it, but i have no doubt the guys in question were hugely embarrassed. It was a great show though, the only time i ever heard Angst live. There was a great versions of the SMYT stuff as well. Like when he played Manitoba alone acoustically it is pretty special. The "i have seen the face of God" bit is pretty heavy when you're drinking. Man thats a tune. Cant belive it was 10 years ago. Come back to Europe Frank. On a side note i'm looking forward to seeing the set lists for nthe upcoming US shows. Will we get Golem? NSE? New sh*t??? I think so.

I have a feeling it'll be mostly the same. Maybe 'Wheels' and 'Magic Cup' as the most recent songs. Hope I'm wrong though. |

... or it could be like the 2006 SF show, where we first heard Dead Man's Curve, My Terrible Ways, The Water and the Rabbits song. Or the 2000 show in Madison where the Catholics played songs from DITS for the first time.

Thank you for the lovely, if slightly vague, compliments about my original hometown of Camden. But now I don't know what to think. You saying you were there, others saying you were not. Let's just leave it at me prefering to believe you were there whether you were there or not. How's that?

I'm a little confused around this.... Did Black Francis do 2 shows around this time in the Camden Underworld? I recall seeing him in the venue with the Catholics, didn't know there was a solo gig as well? Also, remember the Astoria one in October 03.quote: Originally posted by Ziggy
