Mr. and Mrs. Black Francis pay tribute to Springfield
SGF just enjoyed a night of paying tribute to The Pixies, but did you ever imagine a member of The Pixies would pay tribute to Springfield at the same time? It happened, and only through a lot of care and effort from the parties involved. It began when Terra Salinas, a coworker of local musicians Josh Nipstad and Ran Cummings, was told of Nipstad’s plan to hold the Pixies tribute show in November. Salinas had recently reconnected with an old friend and fellow Kickapoo grad, Violet Clark, who today happens to be the wife of Pixies singer Black Francis (given name Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV). Salinas asked her old friend if she and her husband would mind contributing a short hello for the fans. Not only did they say yes, but the couple spent a few days assembling and filming the video you see below.
Together with their kids they looked back on the Pixies’ catalog, said thanks and paid a little homage of their own to Violet’s hometown. It’s a very cool and very gracious gesture, to say the least, and it was shown onstage at Friday’s show during the set change between If Man Is 5 and Up Again. We’ve uploaded it here for your enjoyment, and in spite of some video flickering toward the end (we’ve tried several times to cure it and can’t) it’s more than worth the three-and-a-half minutes it takes to watch. If you missed it Friday night or simply couldn’t be there, check it out now:

A big debt of thanks is owed to Terra Salinas for setting it all in motion, to Violet and Black Francis for indulging a friend and a city, to Ran Cummings for providing us with the video and to Josh Nipstad and everyone involved in the tribute concert, without whom this wouldn’t have a reason to exist. Springfield, here comes your man. What’s more, he knows who you are. |
