Ok, this is just a weird little musical oddity that I noticed, so tell me if I'm the only one hearing this (or if I'm the only one who hadn't noticed).
I was looking at a clip of the Pixies on youtube - the opening of a recent show which they started by playing "Cecilia Ann" and "Rock Music".
And before the show starts, you can hear that the intro music being played is "La Sicilienne", which is a piece of classical music that was used as the basis for "The end of Summer" on the album "Fastman Raiderman".
When I heard it and heard "Cecilia Ann" right after, it struck me that the first line of the melody in both pieces is almost identical.
I know this is some little nerdy musical point.. but what a strange coincidence. Were the Surftones channeling Gabriel Faure (who wrote "La Sicilienne")?
And doesn't the name "Cecilia Ann" sound pretty much like "Sicilienne" (Sicilian)?
Not that any of this matters, but I wonder if anyone else has heard the similarity. |

Yup, I think we covered it on one of the podcasts but it had gone a long time unnoticed by anybody. Pretty cool though and nice pickup.

OK, good to know it was picked up in a podcast (can't believe I missed it). At least I know that I'm not going totally insane, or that if I am..well, I have good company.
I wonder what Black Francis would say, if anything, about this little musical similarity. "It's all disco"? Perhaps. |

I may be remembering wrong but I thought he was surprised... although an older and less-stupid Cult of Frank realizes now that he was probably humouring me and laughing to himself when I excitedly unveiled the shocking news.

Yes, now that I think about it, I guess it seems pretty unlikely that he wouldn't have noticed.
I wonder how many more of these coincidences there may be. Not to mention, if you start getting into lyrics and stuff.
Meanwhile, long live the podcast! I started listening to a bunch of them again after realizing I'd missed some, and they really are a fan's dream come true. So much great stuff.. |
