Consequence of Sound.
Shel Silverstein tribute album includes My
Morning Jacket, Andrew Bird, half of the Pixies

He may be remembered for his children’s books
nowadays more than for his songwriting, but group of
at least 15 of today’s musical artists has come together
to ensure that we acknowledge Shel Silverstein’s
notable songwriting résumé. As reported by
TwentyFourBit, a tribute album called Twistable,
Turnable Man will hit shelves June 8th via Sugar Hill
Records.
Contributing Silverstein covers for the collection are My
Morning Jacket (which opens and closes the album),
Andrew Bird, Dr. Dog, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine,
and Lucinda Williams. As if that wasn’t cool enough
already, also included is a version of “The Cover of the
Rolling Stone” by Pixies members Black Francis and
Joey Santiago, as well as a track by The Boxmasters,
Billy Bob Thornton’s band.
Let’s double back for a second here — this tribute
album has inspired what is basically a new Pixies
recording. Can we just reflect on this fact?
Bobby Bare and Bobby Bare Jr., who have both scored hits with songs written by Silverstein, have

Wow, that's a pretty impressive roster of artists, should be good. I'm excited to hear Charles and Joey together again, I firmly believe he and joey are musical soulmates - one of those rare partnerships in music that just elevates both of them to a whole other level.
I'm listening to a clip of the cover on the website - it sounds great, frank's vocals sound really great on it.

I haven't heard his music but I like some of his drawings. He passed away a month or so ago that I remember.
And yeah. The Pixies comment is the most idiotic thing i've read today. |

I do, I do, and I love that song. I really should have known Shel wrote it when I have his art drawn on a wall at home.

He died in 1999.
He mostly known for his kids books (Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Giving Tree) and poems that were a bit subversive like Roald Dahl and Dr. Seuss (a bit less so). |

Oh really? I don't know why I thought that then. I found his work for the first time online a few months ago and read something about his death. I was going to post a R.I.P message in the relevant thread.

| I grew up in a time in the US (early 70s) where I thought every kid knew Shel Silverstein. He was standard fare. |

I was read them right around 1999/2000 back when I was still in elementary school in Canada, didn't realise it was the same guy until a few days ago - weird.

Nice interview about this tribute album with Bobby Bares Sr and Jr on NPR this evening... including the backstory of how BFB was recruited to play this particular song when he and Bobby Jr. played a show together. (I'm guessing this might have occurred at the Musicfest NW show at Dante's in Portland last year.)
