It's fair enough I suppose to expect to make a living out of your music if it is good enough. It is pretty obvious that they are in it for the money these days, I mean that is what Minotaur is all about isn't it?

Not sure how playing more reunions shows wouldn't earn them all a fair wage though, they are one of the biggest bands in the world and could easily do a stadium tour if they wanted.

Anywayz, hereth I post the article. It's not that interesting. More new Pixies album speculation from the NME...

quote:
Pixies' Black Francis has revealed that the he would like to play more reunion shows but only if "its going to earn us a fair wage".

Talking to The Quietus, the frontman explained that it "ain't about the art anymore".

"We're interested in anything that's going to earn us a fair wage," he admitted. "It's not to say it's not about art, but we made that art fucking 20 years ago. So forget the fucking goddamn art. This ain't about the art anymore. I did the arty farty part. Now it's time to talk about the money."

About to embark on a tour of Australia and New Zealand next month, Francis revealed that he'd like head back into the studio to work on new material with the group, but the prospect of it happening wasn't promising.

"Of course I would," he explained. "Do I seem like I've said anything in the past different? The more I talk about it with guys like you the less likely it is to happen."

So..... Do you feel bad about it? ; )

Where NME's culling from:
http://thequietus.com/articles/03760-news-pixies-for-surfer-rosa-and-come-on-pilgrim-don-t-look-back-shows

He added: "Whatever will happen...if people really wanna know what's gonna happen with the Pixies, they need to talk to promoters and agents. That's where the business is right now - in the live market. And they're the ones that decide all this shit. So whatever is going to happen - whether they tell us directly or in an indirect way because they feel like they have to manipulate us - they're the ones who know.

"We're interested in anything that's going to earn us a fair wage. It's not to say it's not about art, but we made that art fucking twenty years ago. So forget the fucking goddamn art. This ain't about the art anymore. I did the arty farty part. Now it's time to talk about the money. How much do you think we should sell the tickets for? Where do you think we should play? How many shows do you think we should play?"

When it was suggested that the band seemed to be edging closer to recording new material, he answered: "That's your observation that it can, so maybe you're right.

"It's not my decision, but I'd like it too. Of course I would. Do I seem like I've said anything in the past different? The more I talk about it with guys like you the less likely it is to happen.

Surely these interviewers must get the idea, at this stage, that incessant Pixies questions are going to piss him off.

They ARE about the money, and I don't see anything wrong with that. If you've got a viable and reliable source of quick income, shake that tree so you can afford to do what you want with the rest of your life. I get the impression that Charles could give a fuck whether or not the ever record again, but he'd do it if the opportunity came up and he could see eye-to-eye with Kim. Of course, it's really his band anyway. I just can't figure out why so many keep clamoring for new Pixies, when there is a mountain of FrankBlackFrancis material out there that is as good or better than the old Pixies stuff, and is a natural extension of that material. Those guys seemingly ignore most of it. I can't imagine a new Pixies album living up the hype it would generate anyway. I'm sure it would be sweet, but you'd have a large population expecting a new album to change their lives or something. You can't go home again.

To me, the Pixies were Black Francis and Friends. That voice, those lyrics, and the songwriting are what did it for me, then and now. I don't blame him for being pissed. He's still got the voice, still got the chops, still writing killer shit. I love the Pixies and all, but Kim, Joey, and Dave are not essential in my opinion to flesh out FrankBlackFrancis songs. I don't understand what it is that some people want from the guy. To them I say: There ain't any new Pixies, buy a copy of NSE (when it comes out) and move on.

All of this is only my opinion.

I agree with a lot of that, but I do think Joey's guitar was arguably as important to the Pixies' sound as everything else.

Yeah. Good point, I was in full irritated mode when I wrote the above (been studying for a calc test the last couple days and it's breaking my head. Going to college 13 years after you graduate high school isn't the best way to go about things...)

But I stand by everything. Joey's guitar is pretty crucial to the ole' Pixies. No disrespect to the others, I love 'em, particularly for their personalities, but I think any number of power/punk drummers or female backing punk bass players could have filled out the rest. - I apologize in advance to the big-time Kim Deal fans out there.

By the end the Pixies had Joey's brother Bob on guitar and Eric Drew Feldmen on keyboards, so they were basically a six piece. Joey and EDF were on the first Frank Black solo album which sounded very Pixie-ish. That and TOTY would have made excellent Pixies albums. Cult of Ray and the Catholics albums was when Black Francis lost his Pixies touch, and even his most Pixie-ish sounding record to date - Bluefinger - is a long way from the old sound. They may have trouble writing Pixies sounding material again, although they should give it a shot.

I agree, Helmut. Bluefinger is an exceptional record in its own right, but it's not a Pixies record, and I think any attempt at new Pixies material would seem rather contrived at this stage.

I'm holding out for a Catholics reunion, or a prominent Joey Santiago presence on a future album - or both. Realistic expectations aren't my thing...

Frank Black deserves the money, and I've been thrilled about the Pixies reunion simply because it will allow him to make more Frank Black albums. Why in the hell would we want another Pixies album?

Time for me to give The Golem another listen!

The whole interview process and the resulting mangled quotes is at an all time low.

Just got back from the Doolittle show at Festival Hall in Melbourne. My highlights were the obscure songs, like the 4 b-sides at the start of the set and songs like Silver. The rest of the set and the encore was pretty much identical to the last tour of Australia, but it was fun and the audience and the band had fun. I would really love to see a tour consisting of songs from the last two albums with a few new songs and some old standards thrown in, although this won't happen. Looking forward to a greatest hits Frank Black tour next, with a five piece backing band (maybe Joey Santiago and Eric Drew Feldman included)- he could do a tight set that would equal any Pixies show.

Not to belabor anything -- but here is an interview w/ Steve Malkmus about the Pavement reunion in Spin, and Pixies are brought up enough (mostly on the 2nd page) to give this link:

"If you're 40, and you leave your family and fly to Australia to do shows, and you're doing it for the art, that seems kind of weird. If you're doing it for the art, stay home with your family."

Good point.
