I have been a Pixies collector for years and as I need money, I intend to part with my spare copy of the Death To The Pixies Golden Ticket edition of the De Luxe 2xCD package.

Look here for more information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_to_the_pixies

This item is virtually impossible to find, due to the extremely small number of copies (200? 500?), the fact that a large portion was sent by 4AD to die hard 4AD collectors who will never part with it, and the fact that you cannot tell if a copy is Golden Ticket or not, unless you look at the matrix number on the CD.

I may put it on Ebay, but before I am ready to consider offers from members of this forum, that are true Pixies fans like I am.

Cheers

The GT version is the cd version with the hidden tracks, right? The vinyl 10 sided version also has those hidden tracks, but do all vinyl versions have them?

all the vinyl versions have these demo's.
the demos are interesting because while they were released on the frank black francis, the versions on the vinyl have not been edited, so the mistakes frank makes are still there...
disappointingly, these were edited out of the fbf release.

I was the one who had a spare copy for sale but it's gone (through a trade).

It is actually very hard to associate a price tag to this item. For once because you never see it for sale. Also because the collector status of the band is still not clear. The pixies is now a legendary band that never met mass commercial success. There is not much to collect about them. For how much would an original copy of the Purple Tape go these days?

ooh, what did you trade it for?
and what price range would you personally find reasonable?

i've never seen an original copy of the purple tape for sale.

actually, i don't think i've ever seen proper pictures/scans of it. not that i can remember.
except on this release (i assume that's it): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixies_%28EP%29

I traded it for Radiohead rarities (I don't recall exactly what was part of the deal, but there were several items). Basically, for me this meant parting with a spare item in order to get some I was looking for. I think this was a good bargain for both parties. Personally, I do not like the idea to make money out of the passion of somebody else. For instance, I have a certain amount of rare recordings from various bands and artists and I have never asked or accepted money for sharing mp3s.

I think that the only notion of "reasonability" you can find in the collector's market is based on demand and offer. It is not reasonable to sell $1000 an item that can easily be found for half this price. And an item for which it is reasonable to pay $1000 at a certain moment in time may be worth much more or much less 5 years later.

When an item is very hard to find on the market, even impossible, then this is a matter of how much you are ready to pay for it. Concerning the Golden Ticket item, I think that for many people $200 would be reasonable, with some people finding this outrageous while others may be ready to pay much more (I would be one of those). But this is very hard to tell when you cannot compare. If at least you could tell that there are only, say 200 copies of it. But maybe there are 2000 copies in the world and one day, when there is a strong perception of a Pixies collector's market, these copies will flood the market, at least for a certain period.

Concerning the De Luxe CD edition of Death To The Pixies, there is actually a version that the market is totally ignoring and which, I think is quite rare: the French version issued by Virgin France. I bet there were quite few copies of it, considering that there was also a jewel case version of the 2xCD package that was issued earlier.

For about 15 years, I have been hunting for Pixies rarities. In the last 5 years I stopped and I am now back hunting. During these 15 years, I found only one copy of the Purple Tape for sale (on ebay) and I won the auction. I forgot for how much, certainly around $500. It was a very high price for me but I think it would be much higher now. At the time relatively few people cared about the Pixies and very few collected them.

wow, cool. thanks for those scans.

if you have a spare copy of the "golden ticket" edition of "death to the pixies", would you mind sharing a wav or flac of that last track (track 17, "monkey gone to heaven" + "i'm amazed (demo)" + "broken face (demo)")? i already have them on vinyl, but i'd love a cd rip of this. merci.

No problem for sharing. I would need to search in boxes so this may not be something I can do today or even the next few days.

Do you know dropbox? This is a quite convenient way to share files in a controlled way. This would imply that you download the program from their site and contact me by email so that I can authorize you to access the file. The address you can use to contact me from this forum is still valid.

Of course, this applies to other potentially interested people.

i too would be interested in the flac rip of monkey + the demos.
I thought I had a rip of just this track but I can't find it anymore.
I also have a copy of the 4 x 10".
I never had the desire to find a copy of the golden ticket version since I had the 4 x 10"'s but it would be cool to have.
i assume the golden ticket is the same as the original cd boxset in that the printing of the booklet got messed up making the writing illegible?
it was a great release this one.

Hi Benji,

If you can use dropbox, just send an email to me so that I share the folder with you.

You are right, the booklet is the same for the GT version, only the CD is different. I always suspected 4AD to have made the booklet unreadable on purpose.

The French version of the CD box has a corrected booklet.

have sent you an message....
but then i got an error.
.....done....

the printing issue was a mistake.
a staff member of 4ad told me back in the day that it was an error, but it wasn't discovered quickly enough to fix for the release.

I tried using your address. Not sure it worked though (for Discoking the address immediately appeared as associated to the link in a "waiting" status, not yours). Let me know.

Thanks for the info. Did your contact at 4ad tell you anything about the Golden Ticket version? At the time, I was subscribed to a 4ad forum. This is how I learned the existence of the GT version, as it was sent out to the small base of hardcore fans that purchased every release of the label. It was logical that 4ad rewarded them with such a treat and they were very happy of this, but the funny thing is that the Pixies was certainly not the cup of tea of many of them. I bet very few of these copies will ever reach out to the collector's market. One of the members was working for a Tower Records store in the US that managed to get several copies and this is how I got two of them.

thanks alot for the file. good to listen it after all these years.

i didn't know my 4ad contact until 2003 and 2004.
So i didn't find anything else about the DTTP release.
one interesting thing is that the wave of mutilation best of is the only place to find the remastered versions of the songs. all the albums were remastered in 2003/2004 for the re-releases, but the remastered versions were not chosen for release. except on the wave of mutilation release.

i did consider subscribing to the 4ad releases list, however, the amount of additional releases by bands i was not a fan of put me off. that was in 1996 or so. i bought quite a lot of stuff from the 4ad mail order store. have a few catalogues from those days stashed away somewhere.
have this stashed away in the garage:
