Anybody plan on getting that vaccine?
Contrary to my pro-vaccine comments in the healthcare thread, I don't see a reason to get vaccinated against the swine flu this fall. How do you guys feel about the vaccine -- will you have it?
I remember sitting in a basement listening to Fields of Marigold until I passed out.

I have coverage through the VA. If I pay old East Orange a visit between now and then I'll let you know what they think. I'm not opposed to medicine, but I'm through being a compliant pin cushion. If the needle/air gun comes out, well, lets just say I don't use hospital parking.
Edit: Because I apparently haven't made myself clear.
No vaccinations for me period. But if The Government is pushing it, I'll let you know. |

I'm not sure what you mean, dan.
To clarify my initial post on this thread: I won't be vaccinated against the swine flu though I am on the pro-vaccine camp (my kid's had all the routine childhood shots and I get a flu shot every fall). I think they're rushing the whole 'get the swine flu vaccine out there' process plus I smell media-induced panic among the masses.
What do you guys think?

If it's offered I'd probably get it - I get flu vaccines yearly anyway as I'm asthmatic and have a tendency towards chest infections. If i was an otherwise normal healthy adult then I doubt I'd bother and just take my chances; not sure what I'll do about my kids if they are offered it - symptoms are generally mild anyway (well, for flu), so like all ([edit] - well, not all I guess) things, you'd have to be pretty unlucky to die.
I wonder what the risk of dying from swine flu is, versus the risk of death/disability from measles?

i'd probly get it...depending on what side effects it has.
i get the regular flu injection every winter so why not this new one?
even tho, i've had the flu twice this winter...taken 8 days off sick so far in the last 6 weeks so getting very sick of being sick....
all i can say, thank god for polio! brian |

the two years I had a flu shot, I had the flu just as bad as every other year when I didn't get a shot
no pre-flu bugs for me, thanks.
especially a vaccine made under these 'urgent' circumstances - I have visions of harried lab interns asking 'you meant to put this in there..... right?' |

| I am with Llama. I have asthma, too. I have been getting flu shots for 20+ years and I will get one this year. Plus, I hate getting sick. The only thing is I hope I can get one due to the rationing. It sounds like kids and pregnant women will have first priority. |

Yeah, I think they pulled the vaccine when 1) it was killing a small percentage of people and 2) the virus wasn't spread as much as they feared it would. I've talked to an expert about this and he says that this case is classic case study in epidemiology about the difficulty of striking a balance between not being slow to respond and not doing harm. |

The flu might not be good for asthma sufferers either. A few years ago I neglected to get my flu vaccine, caught flu and was wiped out with repeated chest infections for months. Who has fears about the vaccine and asthma sufferers?

Someone suggested it's better not to have a knee jerk reaction of reaching for the medicine cabinet. Instead build up your immune system by healthy eating in the run up to flu season. Does that sound plausible? Or is the strain too strong?
This might be a dumb question but is there going to be a religious consequence of swine flu? I'm worried, with it not being kosher and all, will it give some muslims or jews more cause for harm? There must be some ridiculous theological debates around swine flu going on right now: Why is god punishing us in this non kosher way? But not the irony to ask does god have a sick sense of humor?

Eating healthily is obviously not a foolproof way of avoiding flu, though it'll help. Unfortunately for me, the amount I run leaves little windows of opportunity for bugs to get hold; where my immune system is temporarily depressed after a long run or hard race.

ha, I think up to marathon distance is fine, beyond that, no one really knows the physiological impacts. I race infrequently anyway and I think my body is becoming better adapted to long runs - like Tro said, proper eating/fueling is a part of avoiding bugs, especially in post-run situation.

My neice has a muslim colleague who when she found out that she'd caught swine flu said "I don't understand it. I've never even been near a pig".
