I keep going back to their first album and I can't get into the second one at all and haven't been able to get into the third one much either. I'll move on to number four here eventually.
Also, thanks to Bill Goodman I am starting to get into GBV.
You can't go wrong with Isolation Drills and their most recent output How do you spell heaven, for instance is very easy on the ears. Crystal Nuns Cathedral has just been released and is also pretty straight forward.
The classics run was Alien Lanes, Bee Thousand and Under the Bushes Under the stars. But those can be challenging if you're not used to lo-fi records. (not meant to sound like a snob here, btw)
I also have a soft spot for Universal Truths and Cycles.
Who am I kidding I like them all!

If you're not afraid of a bit of cheesy 80's electro synth wave pop - the new Men Without Hats album is fandabby double dosy. Apparently a collection of new and vault songs from back in the day and comes in parts 1 and 2 (MWH Again Part 2 released today)
Might have to dig around their back catalogues now instead of only occasionally listening to Safety Dance when I take the notion after a few lagers. |

Joined Shudder to check out Boy Harsher's new short art film "The Runner" - it's alright to be honest I find it hard to appreciate abtract cinematogprahy (I always feel like it's a bit random how they decide what order the individual scenes go in)
Anyway, this video for their latest single release works really well and the song is a really catchy/feel-good indie synth pop song that deserves more credit than it'll probably ever get from contemporary dumbed down mainstream pop culture
This is like a better re-edit of the last 5 minutes of the film (40m) I don't know why they did this - for art probably and to boost audience figures for their film

New song by Welsh band Awaith - Eto is a nice uplifting indie track
Didn't think much of the other songs I checked out on Youtube but that one has a good sound |

New Calexico album El Mirador. Have been listening to Joey Burns and Jon Convertino since they were in Giant Sand then began their own thing with Calexico in the 90s. They do desert noir perfectly and all round great band. I always thought a Frank Black and Calexico album / collaboration would have been tremendous.
Here's a song from the recent album with backing vocals from Iron and Wine.

A friend of mine told me "it sounds like a song you wrote", which I wasn't sure how to take, but it was a really astute observation. But it's hard to put into words why that's accurate, but the kind of simple storytelling and sing song melody and non-fiction first person narration, something about the chord progression, etc, etc. |

Been following this guy a bit on Youtube protests for the past two years against the lockdowns - he keeps turning up like a load of other faces - anyway he's become a bit of a celebrity through this and this is his new video - it's both political and might not be aligned with your thinking, but also very funny. Also very well produced song a video that's as good as any other hip hop I've heard. Remeece-

New Sharon van Etten album is out. Sounding as great as ever.
Rewrite that - new album is best thing she's ever done I reckon - Rock n roll hall of fame for van Etten!
Was expecting more 80s synth rock but I'll take the ballads and power ballads, a beautifully sad reflection of the past two years of the Cult of Schwab and his global minions no doubt. Kind of got that from the Angel Olsen Collab previously.. |

Good week for new releases this week. Seem to recall Black Mountain's album of 2019 being in my top 3 albums of the year that year, along with Purple Mountain and The Mountain Goats. New Pink Mountaintops albums is a corker - some really great songs, all filler no killer and plenty of good old fashioned rock and roll. Stephen McBean (front man of Pink Mountaintops and Black Mountain) is becoming a real force to be reckoned with. I've followed his music since Black Mountain album 2: In The Future (2008) and he's got better with every album.

I thought I'd go back and listen to Black Mountain's 2019 effort - Destroyer - but it turns out they had another one out since then that I missed - Necromancer's Moon. Holy crap this is like pure death metal - like Slayer or Death or something like that. And really good death metal as well! You just never know what you're going to get with Stephen McBean. |

New Belle & Sebastian album is really good. I'd kind of stopped listening to them after Belle left, but this new stuff is fresh and funky. |

New Def Leppard album is pretty solid - if you’re into that kind of thing. We’re all allowed at least one guilty pleasure. If you can get past the first few tracks (mostly the promo singles) there are actually quite a few proper rocking numbers of the 80’s Americana Rock variety. Some stuff on there that’s as good as anything off Hysteria. I know the vocals are totally over produced and the music snobs like to have a dig at them like Nickelback (who for the record I can’t stand) but I just find their music great to rock out to.
Couple of Alison Kraus collaborations on there too - first one sucks quite badly like Billy Ray Cyrus country music but the second is better. |

as a black mountain fan, i was really interested in this new black mountain album that i also completely missed. but it was confusing, as at first, i couldn't find anything about this album.
turns out it's not the same band. "black mountain black metal" is an australian band. https://blackmountainblackmetal.bandcamp.com/ https://www.eschatonicrecords.com/blackmountain/

Yes I realised after it was a different Black Mountain - the streaming sites are bad for failing to discern between bands with the same name. The death metal version are good too it seems anyway. |

yes, they automatically aggregate a lot of data, and then stuff like this happens...
these days i'm really into the new tin fingers single, islandhead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgB3nVhNThw (featuring the singer of whispering sons)

I figured it out shortly after and meant to correct my post but then didn’t bother - apols for the confusion. On the plus side though there’s still a great new Pink Mountaintops albums just out. Both manifestations of the Stephen McBean write and record music through a band project have evolved and changed over time and I find it hard to discern between the two really. Don’t know much about who the other band members are either - I think Pink Mountaintops is more of a come jam with Stephen McBean project? |

Nice. Probably got loads of stuff I've not yet checked out myself.
I love the video (and song) for Execution but I've no idea if all the women in it are part of the band (at the time) or they were just used for the video. |

New TV Priest album. Songwriting on track 2 reminds me a lot of FBF's style and early Pixies. Getting more Danzig from track 4.
Solid album this actually - hearing lots of post-punk influence in there and some great songwriting, rocking indie guitar and good bass work - a few tracks reminded me a bit of the Pixies 1.0 style. Vocals are more 80's goth rock/U2. Suppose you could say there's a bit of moody Nick Cave in there too.
All in all a more intelligent version of modern punk than the likes of Idles and DC Fontaine
Have to check out their previous album next.. |

Just listening to the new album by Automatic - Excess. Never heard of them before or know anything about or what this album would sounds like when I listened to it, but it's very good. Quite moody and dark and 80's synth wave. Maybe a bit New Young Pony Club?
I think you appreciate albums better from the perspective of a blank canvas - and this is why I won't watch the Doggerel podcast until I hear the album because preconceptions always tend towards affecting your perspective negatively, and sometimes I've found albums that I later liked not going down as well with me initially because I was expecting something else.
Just got up, made a coffee and some medicinal oil and my brain melted away into this lovely album; and I fully acknowledge also that it might not be as good as i think it is right at this moment because I'm a bit baked and it's Glasto Weekend. |

Killing Joke - watched a few live clips of them touring recently and they're a bit different now to how they were in the 80's - not that I paid much attention but know the well known ones but anyway they're still a great band but more heavy rock these days - pretty solid goth punk band who have aged well
