Toadies Announce Dia De Los Toadies Tres, Hint At As Many As Two New Releases in 2010 By Pete Freedman in Music NewsMon., Jan. 25 2010 @ 4:37PM #8203;A pretty exciting e-mail just popped up from the folks at Kirtland Records: Specifically, the release is centered around the Toadies, announcing the third annual Dia de Los Toadies Festival, which, in 2010, will take place at White Water Rocks in New Braunfels, between San Antonio and Austin, Texas.
This year's deal also expands the event to a two-day affair, set to take place on Friday, August 27, and Saturday, August 28. Friday night's show will feature a a maximum capacity of 300 and a special acoustic-only performance from the band. Saturday, meanwhile, will open up the floodgates to 5,000 surely eager fans.
No support acts have yet been named, but tickets will be available for purchase at Front Gate Tickets starting Friday, February 5.
And that's all fine and good. But pardon us if we're a little more drawn to this string of sentences that closes out the email: What's in store for 2010? Remember the old adage about something old and something new? Rumor has it that 2010 might bring another new Toadies record. Or two..?! Specifically, we're reading between the lines and assuming we could be seeing both a new Toadies record and the long-awaited release of the band's long-shelved, never-released 1998 effort, Feeler--which, if nothing else, means Wilonsky's might finally bust the nut he's been building up for over a decade now concerning that sumbitch.
Read the release in full after the jump.
Toadies announce date and location for Dia De Los Toadies III and hint at new releases.
Toadies are excited to announce the third annual Dia De Los Toadies. What the hell is it? Dia De Los Toadies is an annual concert event put on by the Toadies themselves at various unique locations in Texas.
The first DDLT took place in 2007 at Possum Kingdom Lake, just outside of Graham, TX. The show was an outstanding success, selling out well in advance. Last years concert was held at Rough Creek Ranch near Stephenville, Tx where Toadies upped the ante by inviting some of the best, and most diverse Texas bands to join them including platinum selling Bowling For Soup, art rockers The Secret Machines and Ben Kweller.
After the overwhelming response they received from 50,000 rabid fans at last years ACL the Toadies decided it was time to bring Dia De Los Toadies to the Hill Country. 2010's Dia De Los Toadies, which expands to two nights, Friday Aug 27th and Saturday, Aug 28th, will be held at White Water Rocks in New Braunfels, between San Antonio and Austin, Texas. The evening show on Aug 27th will be an intimate "campfire" type setting acoustic performance limited to only 300 tickets while Saturday's show on the 28th will be no holds barred rock n roll with 5,000 fans and bands tearing it up on two stages.
Opened in May of 2007, White Water Rocks concert facility is a unique outdoor venue, and offers two stages to host an array of leading artists as Central Texas' newest premier outdoor venue. White Water has taken care to retain the beauty of its natural surroundings on the banks of the Guadalupe River.
Originally formed in 1989, Toadies remain arguably the biggest and best alternative rock band in North Texas music history! Toadies have sold over a million albums with hit singles including the songs "Possum Kingdom," "Away" and "Tyler." 2008 saw them reunite after a 7-year absence, record their newest record No Deliverance, play a US Tour that sold out in many major markets including New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Atlanta, Washington, DC, Seattle, Minneapolis and of course all over Texas including Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. Toadies also headlined Lollapaloozas My Space stage in 2008 and played the main stage at 2009's ACL Festival. No Deliverance spawned a Top 40 single with the title track at Active Rock radio. The band still gets over 600 spins a week at alternative and active rock with combined plays from their current record as well as the Platinum selling Rubberneck. No Deliverance has scanned over 50k copies to date and was the #4 selling indie record week of release.
What's in store for 2010? Remember the old adage about something old and something new? Rumor has it that 2010 might bring another new Toadies record. Or two..?! In the meantime, keep your eyes on DiaDeLosToadies.com for updates. Support bands will be announced monthly.
Tickets go on sale 2/5/10 at Front Gate Tickets.

Ignorant question - but the only Toadies song I know is "Possum Kingdom." Should I listen to them? Where should I start? Why do you guys like them? |

Not that I’d ever compare them to the Pixies but, ‘Possum Kingdom’ is their ‘Here Comes Your Man’. It’s THAT song by any band you start with and expand from there. It never shows up in any of your ‘Best of lists’, but you always can count on the band to play it live because it’s their bread and butter song.
The other thing that always pops up about the Toadies is the song ‘Tyler’. ‘Tyler’ is, by some, called a blatant rip off of ‘Where Is My Mind’. Same beat just a little faster. I like to call it an honest and calculated tribute. And it’s one of my favorites. ‘Tyler’ is similar in another way. It is almost always an encore song. The song that is constantly yelled out for during concerts so the band will play. Which can be so annoying since everyone else knows they are going to play it during the encore. You can listen to both 'Tyler' and 'WIMM' below. They were played during the encore of their 2001 tour. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IDH1SW/ref=dm_sp_alb
The band formed in 1989, but I believe they didn’t get signed to a record label till 1993. When ‘Rubberneck’ was released in 1994 most everyone outside of Texas never heard of them until 1995 when a radio station I believe in Florida started playing ‘Possum Kingdom’ and calling the story in the song about Vampirism. Other stations picked up on this story and started to play the song along with labeling it as a song about Vampires. This helped the album attain Platinum status. Oh and it's not about Vampires. It's a scary story the singer heard one night sitting around the campfire at Possum Kingdom Lake.
The band has only three full length studio albums. Rubberneck (1994), Hell Below / Stars Above (2001), No Deliverance (2008). In 1997 or 98 their record label, Interscope, rejected there follow up recording tentatively titled ‘Feeler’. Maybe they didn’t sound like Limp Brisket who somehow took over the Label.
I have close to hundred songs from them. Some of them are listenable and unlistenable cassette tape demos copied to mp3. Others are unreleased B-sides from Rubberneck and HB/SA. Some more are demo copies of Rubberneck and Feeler. More still from Movie Soundtracks and Compilations. There are a few double songs and renamed songs rerecorded at different sessions.
Start at Rubberneck.

This is 'Heel' performed live in 2001. There was supposed to be a LIVE DVD of this show from the Paradise club in Boston but it either got 'lost' or scrapped when the band broke up. Instead they only released the Live CD 'Best of Toadies - Live from Paradise'. There is a cover version of 'Where Is My Mind' in the Live CD. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeBbHm2MbIM

Music News
Finally, Feeler. Or: At Last, the Toadies Are Releasing That Rubberneck Follow. Kind Of. By Robert Wilonsky
One need not dig too far on the Internet to find copies of Feeler, which was intended to be the Toadies' second album for Interscope Records till the label ultimately scuttled its release. But those versions aren't quite the real thing; they are, instead, unmixed and unmastered iterations -- and most lack the three songs that would ultimately find their way to Hell Below/Stars Above.
For the past, oh, year or so, there had been talk that perhaps the band would finally release Feeler in some form. But as I understood it, Interscope refused to let the thing go all these years later. Which is why, at this very moment, the band is in a Los Angeles studio with producer Rob Schnapf re-recording the album for a planned August release. This morning, Kirtkand Records posted this video teaser.
Kirtland's Tami Thomsen tells DC9 that the album will be available as a digital release and as a tour souvenir almost as soon as the band finishes mixing and mastering the album in coming weeks. It is, she says, very much a "throw and go" project -- meaning, once it's done, it's yours.
She cautions those who've been coveting the lost album that "it's not necessarily the exact same album." Some Feeler songs didn't make the cut. And other songs, including, perhaps, a thus-far unnamed Beatles cover, may wind up on the newly recorded album. This version, says Thomsen, is "the band's interpretation of those songs, completely new and completely from scratch." Either way, about time.

They did a kick-ass version of Don't Let Me Down years ago. I hope that is the one they chose.

“We can’t help but feel a bit of redemption releasing Feeler 12 years after Interscope decided it wasn’t good enough and shelved it. We always thought it was going to be a good Toadies album. Since there are unfinished versions floating around on the Internet, it is important to us that people hear it as we meant it to be. We are beside ourselves that people can finally hear this music and judge for themselves. ” –Toadies

I don't think they were allowed to. I think they had to get the rights back from Interscope to make this happen.
Also, I still didn't get an answer back if this is going to be an I-Tunes only release ala One More Road For The Hit & Snake Oil or a physical CD release. I'm hoping for a CD release.

Again I can't disagree with you. Both 'Waterfall' and 'Joey, Let's Go' were recoreded as B-Sides for HB/SA, but only 'Joey..' was leaked back in 2001, 'Waterfall' took me years to track down. There was a mini uproar over at the Toadies BBS about each of the songs I listed except 'Tornado' since it was Lisa's Dads song. I say mini uproar 'cause there are only a few people posting. If 'Clarksville' and 'Your Day' replaced 'Waterfall' and 'Joey..' there would be less to gripe about.

I found a couple of Toadies quotes regarding the Pixies and figured I'd post them here.
"One time back in 1991, the Toadies went to a Pixies concert, and gave the band a copy of their Dig a hole/I hope you die" single. Kim Deal said, "You guys sound like us!""
"The Pixies are still the greatest band ever" - Lisa
