Okay. As I mentioned in the Talking Heads thread, I just bought third row tickets to David Byrne in Athens. (YEAH!!!) I've seen a few acts here, but nothing musical. But I know that the venue is full of chairs.
I have a feeling that everybody is going to be sitting down, laying back and watching the show. I don't know because I've never been to a concert in Greece, and I've never been to show in a venue where everybody sits.
My point it this: you can't go to a david byrne show and not dance. but how in the heck am i supposed to enjoy myself if everyone around me is sitting? i'm not afraid to get up dance--i don't care what people think of me--but if i'm the only one standing, security might make me sit. or they might kick me out.
Has anybody been to show like this? what to do you think?

I was at a David Bowie show about twenty years ago, the
Sound and Vision tour. This audience had members from
every age group including lots of baby-boomers who were
about the age I am now.
The crowd spent most of the night unsure if they should
get up on the chairs and cheer or act their age and sit,
as they were perfectly serviceable chairs.
There were waves of energy and optimism, and fatigue,
and the very odd lack of marijuana smoke.
At the end of the night Bowie threw his very lovely
cherry Gibson Chet Atkins Hollowbody across the stage
at his bass player. |

it seems like that would ruin show, being uncertain of how you should act the whole time...
fuck it. i'm going to dance if the spirit moves me. i'll show these greeks how to have fun.

i went to that show in Vancouver. it was great. i think we stood, don't think there was much dancing. we were in lower level seating.

Is this the infamous 7 "real" American Rock'n'Roll fans?
Now you're making me think seriously about the problem
of designing seating arrangements for concerts.
You can't have rush seating since The Who in Cincinnati,
and big open areas in front of the stage tend to create
crush zones at the time the band first appears on stage.
Maybe you can have assigned seating with open areas with
enforced capacity limits [a gate] at the side of the
stage.

i was crushed/raped at my first Sonic Youth concert.
In Greece, assigned seating is a must, even in movie theaters. Otherwise people will fight over the seats. Seriously.
