Well, they are reforming again....I hope they record and release some new material. Some people will hate it, some will like it, I just hope they get back into the studio this time around!! |

Interviewer: "Frank, would it be a blessing if the continuing calls for a Pixies album would end after this Grand Duchy record?"
BF: "Yeah... that'd be great."
Interviewer: "Is it so nerve-wracking?"
BF: "No, if... Yeah, I guess it is after a while, because (pause) because it's not going to happen, you know, and I just want to move on and make music and... It's a mixed blessing when you have success with something, because you can't escape from it, unless you have more success with something else."
This was last month. Of course things could still change... apparently you can never know with that band.

I would have never guessed that the Pixies would ever play again on such short notice. Kim said such rotten things about Frank that I couldn't imagine them playing in 2009. I guess they got a good offer.
In 2006/2007 there was much talk of an album, but it never happened. Can't see why any new material would surface now.Maybe because Frank said over and over again that playing the same shit every night for 3 years and more is pointless. That's why this will probably be just a couple of shows. Hope I'm wrong though.

Well this took me by surprise too.
I wonder if Grand Duchy will be touring along side them. There's no reason why that couldn't happen...
As for a new Pixies album, I'll be even more surprised if that ever happens. |

I am suprised they continue to keep touring and playing the same old set list. Whilst it was great to see them in Australia in 2007, I doubt they would have the same impact if they came out and played the same setlist in 2010.
The Black Francis show at the Melbourne Forum in 2008 was so bitterly dissapointing that I doubt he would be welcomed back here with open arms - his attitude and half assed playing of only songs from his last two albums destroyed a lot of the good will he built up with his 2007 Pixies tour. Whilst the Breeders tour of Oz in 2008 was slightly better recieved, they only played at a small venue and the last 2 Breeders albums have been pretty crap. It must be dissapointing for Kim and Charles to go from festival headliners to being the warm up band. United they are a powerful musical force. As seperate entities they have their moments, but are only half of what they could and should be.
I reckon they are recording a new album as we speak - we all know that Joey and David are recording together (even if it was the dreadful "Christmastime in LA" or whatever - I hope that was just a test recording to get the levels right in the studio), and I have a feeling that the current innactivity by Black Francis and Kim Deal means they are secretley writing, rehearsing and recording a new album. For better or for worse, it is the best thing they can do for their careers and their fans. |

yes, agree to disagree,
Although I'm with you on the last BF-shows. The last one I saw was not so good. Still, if you don't like Bluefinger or SVN FNGRS I doubt a new Pixies album would satisfy you.

Misleading thread title alert! :)
New material wouldn't surprize me now, because Frank has reiterated on a number of occassions that he feels they'd have to start releasing new stuff if they want to justify the continuation of the band. |

i would enjoy the thought of a new pixies album but it seems that if kim agreed she would just be phoning it in. after listening to petit fours i would love a grand duchy album with joey and dave/and or jason carter.

If history has taught me anything, you really never know with THe Pixies. It actually makes sense that they have been quiet these past few weeks cause they are really trying new things out.
Breeders supposedly have an upcoming ep which they haven't talked about, and black francis has the golem coming out soon, but none of them are doing press. I hope I'm right, but a new Pixies album seems very possible, even if they deny it.
After all these years it would have to be an amazing album for them to release it. HYPE!!!! Imagine if the Pixies release their best album next year, that is probably too high of expectations, but I can see them making a real kick ass innovative album.

It makes sense for the Pixies to drop an album with no fanfare or speculation. Just put the fucker out, tour a bit, and then go off and do their own thing for a bit.
Bill Goodman - I liked Bluefinger the album a lot - thought it was his best album since Black Letter Days. I think it didn't really come across all that well live. Black Francis admitted on these forums that the Australian shows were a bit sketchy, and that he seemed to be in a bit of a flux artistically. It was almost as if he was just busking, or playing for himself, on the 2008 tour of Oz as he really didn't connect with the audience at all. |

he played great in perth. Brisbane was a shocker im sad to say. (2008)
The pixies didnt really wow me live, but maybe that was because it was at a festival, so it was like a doolittle-fest. I listen to the music and watch the old vids and i love the Pixies, but the BFrancis there looks/acts/sounds like a completely different person, and rightly he is. Going and making another album? i just dont see the point. Its just another black francis album with kim playing bass and joey playing guitar (which he tends to do occasionally anyway) ...and DL on drums.
I personally rate FB/BF miles ahead of the Pixies, even in his nashville music, but thats my taste. I go back and listen to the pixies after 5 yrs of not, and they wow me again.

the show I saw in 2008 was my least favorite too, and I saw like 6 or 7 FB shows.

Actually the two shows I saw at the end of the European tour were a bit lame I thought too. But the previous tour in 2007, where I was FB in Nijmegen was awesome!
I reckon circumstances might have had a bearing, Violet had to pull out for obvious reasons, and Charles Normal was out too for family bereavement, but I don't know if he was down for that tour anyway. I think his presence made a lot of difference in 2007 though as he is a shit hot rock guitarist and gave the show a lot more energy, that and Jason's drums. |

IMO none of Frank Black's solo work was ever as solid as The Pixies. For example- I love Teenager Of The Year but it still sounds kind of 90's to me. The Catholics made some great songs, but they sound very classic rock and not nearly as new as The Pixies did- also my problem with frank black's records is that most of them have a decent amount of filler on them, especially black letter days, pistolero and dog in the sand has one or two weak songs.
There is something about The Pixies- I think they just had an incredible dynamic, even at their worst- the songs were always interesting and exciting. I've been listening to the Pixies for so long, so the songs are kind of old now- but what I am saying is that if the Pixies were to try something new, I think there is a good chance they can make something amazing. Joey, Kim, Frank and David are an amazing duo............................ |

The album is already recorded. They just aren't saying anything.
That's what I think... but none of the band members will confirm this for me. |

I thought Bam Thwok was a good single - it sounded new and fresh and like the Pixies, but was unlike anything they had done before. It still sounds good when they play it on JJJ in Australia - Joey's guitars are just as angular as ever and Kim's voice is sounding good. I would be happy for them to do 12 new songs like Bam Thwok that explore new territory and sound unlike anything they've done before. Then I would go see 'em play again! |

It says on JOey Santiago's Twitter page he is calling the new project with Dave The Everybody. Could that be a clue, the everybody being everybody from the original PIxies line-up?
There are nine tracks coming out in May, and if you can get a free track here.

Is this a full on Pixies tour or just a couple festival gigs? I can't see them doing an actual tour without a new album. That horse has been fully flogged. |

theonecontender, it looks like a tour according to bits and pieces of media leaked to the press. I hope they have an EP or something to flog to make ANOTHER reunion worthwhile..
The first show of the Pixies 2009 Tour has been announced! I kicked myself a thousand times for missing their very intimate gig upstate in 2005, but now it seems that I may finally get a chance to see one of my fave bands of all time. The first show has been announced and more dates to follow!

I just asked Joey on his Twitter page if they were working on a new Pixies album, and sadly the answer was negative. But that is not to say they aren't still recording a new record and keeping it very secret. Maybe they are planning on showcasing some new material on the latest tour to see what kind of a response they get.
