Those with some web experience, what do you think of various web platforms? I've been looking pretty seriously at MediaWiki, but am wide open to suggestion and alternatives at this point.

I don't know much at all about wikis but from the few I've seen http://playgreen.org/ is one of only a small amount that have a clean layout (though admittedly it doesn't have the same kind of content as fb.net). Apparently it uses PmWiki - http://www.pmwiki.org/ - which, again, I know nothing about.

Have you come across this site http://www.wikimatrix.org/index.php which compares the different features of wiki software? There's also a link on that site to forummatrix.org for err.. surprisingly.. forums.

So, yeah, this is a pretty longwinded way of saying I have no intelligent or informed suggestions.

Thanks for the link, Damien, I definitely want to have a cleaner layout than the sort of universal wiki default. That has some nice features.

I have definitely spent some time in the wiki matrix (and more still in the forum one). There are just so many to choose from, but I think we'll just set up a sandbox and start digging. As for forums, I'm looking (for the moment) at SimpleMachines assuming that the wiki or CMS we wind up with doesn't do discussion/forums better.

I've used e107, which is based on LAMP, has built-in forums, and a ton of user created plugins. Mambo is also a very popular open source CMS with built-in forums. Both of these CMS provide easy user management, user news/content submissions, and are frequently updated, unlike snitz...

I can help with whatever with these CMSs, but you'll be surprised how easy it is to use these sites, (and manage), once you have it installed, it pretty much runs itself...

Yeah, I was looking at Mambo some time ago. I have some trouble deciding on that style of CMS vs a wiki platform...

To be fair to Snitz, while they haven't released a new version in years, they do continually update and patch especially security related issues. Still, it's time for something new. I'll have a look at e107, haven't heard of it before.

Well, a wiki is for information, whereas CMSs are for communities. In addition, CMSs have wiki plugins available, which is convenient, so you don't have to have multiple logins for the same site, (one for forums, one for wikis). CMSs handle news, forums, wikis, picture galleries, audio plugins, automatic paypal donation plugins, you name it...

I've spent the last little while looking more into CMS platforms. At the moment, I'm leaning in a Drupal (drupal.org) direction. It looks like they have a big community, lots of features, scale well, and can do a lot of what we need.

I think a CMS might be the way to go here more and more...
