My kid's got a loose tooth! It's her first! I am soooooooooo excited. But I have to figure out this whole Tooth Fairy thing.
Can you my fellow forumites give advice on what to do, based on your memories as kids or what you've done as parents? By advice I mean, dollar or quarter? For the Canadians, I'm torn between Loonie and Toonie. A friend had the Tooth Fairy leave a 5$ bill, which ain't happening in this household -- $5 is too much for a 6 year old, IMO. Also, where does the Tooth Fairy leave said $? Under the pillow or what? I have no friggin clue what to do.
Thanks for helping make this milestone so "very, very special" (to quote Celine Dion).

We've been doing a dollar coin.
Did it just fall out? Those buggers can be hard to get out. My wife once did the string tied to the tooth and to a door knob trick. The tooth ricocheted (sp?) around the room like a bullet. |

Give her two bucks for the tooth, tell her there is no such thing as the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, Jesus, or the boogeyman known as Osama, go for a nice walk to get an ice cream, tell her how important you feel honesty is and that you love her more than anything else in the world.

We did a toonie. My girl is pretty wimpy though. Too scared to pull it even when I can see the adult tooth growing in behind it. She was so proud when she did get it out she wanted to keep it and proceeded to write the tooth fairy a 2 page letter asking to keep it and whatever else she rambled on about. All of this under the pillow.
You could give her a Canadian commemorative quarter set...

But unicorns are real, right? Right?
By the way, is the spelling "Santa Clause" some kind of joke (as it is in the crappy Tim Allen film series), or just a really common mistake?

My oldest has lost two teeth so far, and the youngest has lost none. For each tooth, we've done three of the dollar coins (George Washington; very shiny). My colleagues at worked freaked when I said we gave three bucks per tooth, saying that's an absurd amount of money to give a small child.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Ok. I'm going with the dollar coin. You guys rock.
When do I determine whether I need to do the door/string trick or otherwise help?

They'll eventually fall out, but it's pretty disgusting when they walk around with a tooth hanging by the root. Having them eat an apple is a relatively easy tactic. |

She's mastered the art of chewing apples on the other side of her mouth. Plus, she's gotten both of us sick by constantly fiddling with her tooth aka sticking germs into her mouth. I've been sick all friggin week because I caught her tooth-fiddling-caused cold.

The dollar-coin, that's a good idea. I think when me and my brothers were kids we got change, like maybe two quarters.
