Frenchy wasn't the first one to say it that way. Llama was. Seems it's a European thing.

British English - anticlockwise North American English - counterclockwise
So both are correct, and also don't jump into bed with the Seppos to claim some NA hegemony, you don't rock and you certainly don't rule.

Are you calling Denis a Brit? Them's fightin' words! You are right, I most certainly do not rock. Frank won't come to my town. I won't rock until I get me some Bluefinger tour.

Upside-down counter-clockwise which is clockwise. Back where we started.

? when the shadow goes further away from our point of view (more up in the 2-dimension pic) -> the foot is moving away and the opposite when the shadow is moving closer (down)

the shadow doesn't give any clues, because the light could be coming from in front or from behind. there is no real direction!

I can't understand how anyone could see it anticlockwise. And more if this person is supposed to have a fact-based way of thinking. It's not a question of appreciation, it's a matter of fact, she's turning CLOCKWISE. Does left brain people watch their screen in a mirror?

I guess cos I'm only able to see her turning in one direction, the same is also true with the shadow. Is there any real science to any of this or is it on a par with horoscopes as someone mentioned?

If you imagine the foreground is the background and vice-versa then she would in theory be turning the other way. I'm with you though, I can only see her turning clockwise.

there is some truth behind it but i'm pretty sure lots of things overlap and it's a huge generalisation. i haven't looked at whether this pic really determines which side is dominant.

ok. i'm truly using both halves here and can understand that the girl may be facing towards me or away from me in each still image. (and we're talking about her position anyway, not my perspective which is always the same.) but, the shadow is cast in my direction any way you look at it. now that that's cleared, look at the shadow of the raised foot again, it's "drawing" an ellipse, i.e. moving up and from right to left - that's when it is further from our point of view (and further from her center of movement), and then on the left side moving down off the canvas when it is getting closer to our point of view. now unless the pic is upside down and she's actually doing a headspin in a breakdance performance, that movement judging from the shadow her raised foot is casting is counter-clockwise. puh-eriod

Finally, after trying several times, I got her to spin clockwise. I can achieve this by looking at the shadows of her feet, or even a couple inches below the image. Once I get her going that way, then I can move my eyes to the center of the image and she continues going clockwise. But if I shut my eyes for a second or two and reopen them, she's going counterclockwise (aclockwise? unclockwise? declockwise? clocklessly?) again.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

touche. i had a good think and i agree. there's no an angle of light that could explain the shadows in a clockwise motion.
i removed the shadow.
would you now say there's no ultimate direction?

Of course, there is no true direction. I hope people are only messin' about otherwise.
I mostly see it anti-clockwise, mostly.

Ok now this is weird; seeing the two above and below each other makes the top go clockwise and the bottom go anticlockwise. Quoi?

I'm trying to understand seeing counter-clockwise. Do we all agree that she's standing on her left foot and she has her right arm extended? Her head is cocked to the right? |
