Hello, I am looking for an acoustic guitar where I could try sounding like FB...I already have a Telecaster as electric but really wants to change my acoustic one. What guitar would you advise between 1,000 and 1,500 USD? Ovation? Takamine? Washburn? Ok, I know I need to try them after but if at least you could give me some advise...

He's been playing Martin guitars for some years now, I think. Somebody else can shed more light on this.

I would say you should double your budget and get a Taylor. They sound amazing.

$1,000 - $1,500 USD? You can get a real nice guitar for that kind of cash.

Not sure what sounds "like FB" (it probably has more to do with how your right hand scrubs). I love my Martin 000-15 but it doesn't necessarily sound like Frank's.

This is a good database of equipment reviews:

2007 Limited Ed. Storm Cutaway A/E or
Bleem Limited Ed. Storm Cutaway A/E

EF341SC A/E

These are all Takamines. The top 2 are on the top of you price range, the bottom one is about $1000. I used to own one and I liked it a lot. It sound great acoustic or electric, but electric is delicious. I know FB at some point was playing an old Takamine with holes in it. I've never seen him play a cutaway, but I've never see him play any solos either. I think it's nice to have and a/e and a cutway because it is more versatile. The EF341SC was or maybe still is Bruce Springsteen's guitar. Ever since FB covered "goin down" I've always compared their styles. I think they really do have a lot in common song writing style, especially catholics stuff, not so much with the personality though.

Anyway, I was bored and I like looking at guitars. Just something for you to look at.

He has a couple of Takamines at least, one of which is a cutaway version, played on the later Pixies reunion gigs.

A Martin seems to be his guitar of choice at the moment, though he's certainly played Taylor guitars too.

Those two Cafe du Nord songs with EDF pre FMRM show him playing an impressive range of guitars.

Thanks for your answers ! Martin seems to be a good choice, for sounding FB but also good music ! Anyway, there are so many models that I do not have any idea of the one I could try !! Is 000-15 the good choice in that range of price?

I bought mine new six years ago for under $500. I've always been elated with it. I'm tall but still I've never felt comfortable playing a full-size dreadnaught, so I enjoy the smaller size. IMO the reviews at Harmony Central are pretty accurate.

IMO you should take a trip to your local music store and check out some guitars to see what's right for you. When you're spending that much money, you should be sure you're getting what you want. Happy hunting!

That's it--this weekend I'm going to put in the ol' Pixies dvds and see if I can figure out what Francis was playing. He was using that same cutaway guitar since '86. Pics of it that I saw in my youth was the first time I'd ever seen an acoustic that looked like that, all horned and eeeevil looking! I loved it. I hope there's a name on it somewhere...
