I live a mere 10-15 minute walk from Cafe Du Nord! I'm there :)
What night are you guys going?
Also, I really want to know this...what kind of MATERIAL do you think Frank will most likely be playing? Just Bluefinger/FMRM/Honeycomb? Or older stuff as well?
I haven't heard Bluefinger yet...but Honeycomb and Fast Man/Raider Man did nothing for me at all (and I would never buy them). |

It's reported to be the band that recorded Bluefinger (or some of them, I think), so I'm guessing Bluefinger with some pre-Nashville Frank Black tunes. Loud!!
I live much closer to Sacramento, but my schedule might keep from going to the Sac show. If that happens, I would go to SF probably on the 10th. |

I haven't heard Bluefinger yet, but if its a return to the rock sound (as I hear it is), that is definitely cool!
And pre-Nashville is exactly what I want to hear. LOUD.
See you there...now the question remains, what nights is everyone going? I haven't been around these forums in ages, but used to post here a lot and remember some of you from those days. It would be cool to meet up at this cozy venue and kick back a few and soak up some awesome Frank Black. |

I changed my mind and now I'm going on Thursday 10/11. I lost my pimp hat though. I will be the relatively short guy accompanied by a 6'4" giant guy (nationality unknown, but very pale), a 6'3" Dutch guy, and a 6'2" Mexican/American Indian guy. I just hope they let me stand in front of them.

For 14 years after leaving the Pixies, Charles Thompson IV tried to establish
a separate identity as a solo artist. On his first dozen solo albums, he
flipped his nom de Pixie Black Francis and called himself Frank Black.
No more. For his latest CD, "Bluefinger," Thompson has decided to give up
the fight and bill himself as Black Francis again.
"If you read every single review, good or bad, of every record I've ever made, of course they refer to that shadow which
I cannot escape," Thompson says, raising his voice as he refers to the sizable legacy of his old band, a key
influence on such crucial bands as Nirvana and Radiohead.
"They want me to be Black Francis, and they think that's the only thing that I've done that has any value," he
continues. "So it's kind of like, fine, I'll be that."
Therefore, Black Francis will be the name on the marquee when Thompson and his band come to the area for one
show at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz and three at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco next week.
"Bluefinger" isn't the new Pixies album many fans hoped to see this year, but the disc does hew closer to that
band's often-abrasive brand of alt-rock than the Americana-tinged sound of the last few Frank Black releases.
Thompson pulls out the unbridled scream that was his trademark during the Pixies days, and his wife, Violet Clark,
lends backing vocals that recall Pixies bassist Kim Deal.
Thompson, 42, says the album's new songs came to him in a burst after he viewed a clip of the late Dutch
rocker Herman Brood singing and playing piano
with his band.
"I stumbled onto a performance of his on YouTube
and got obsessed with him for about 10 days and
wrote a record about him," he says of Brood, who was also a noted visual artist and an unapologetic hard-drug user.
"I just thought he was really good and really charismatic and haunting."
"Bluefinger" consists of 10 songs inspired by Brood's wild life, which ended when he leaped from the ninth floor of
the Amsterdam Hilton in 2001, and a version of Brood's "You Can't Break a Heart and Have It," the song Thompson
heard on YouTube.
While passing through the Netherlands recently on tour, Thompson got a chance to visit Brood's atelier, which has
been kept exactly as Brood left it.
"It was creepy," he says. "All his stuff's there - his hypodermic needles, his porno, his paintings, his clothing, his
drugs, his speed, his booze, his records that he listened to while he was painting, including one of my own."
Thompson spent much of the past 3 1/2 years doing some lucrative touring with the reunited Pixies, including two
shows at Berkeley's Greek Theatre in 2004 and one at the San Jose Civic Auditorium in 2005. Comments made by
Thompson in interviews led many to expect a Pixies studio album this year, but he says the recording never got off
the ground.
"Nothing ever was really happening with it," he explains, though he admits he wrote some material for the proposed
album.
"To some people's minds, it would be like, 'Well, the songwriter-singer dude wrote some songs for that purpose, so
that's a pretty big step,' " he says. "But you don't know the rest of my band."
So now Thompson - who left Southern California for Portland, Ore., about four years ago - is focused on his solo
career and his family. He and his second wife have four children, ages 1 to 9, one of which can be heard gooing
and gahing throughout the phone interview. Thompson says he and Clark, who sings in his live band, will bring
some of the kids on the road with them.
"When they first started doing it, they hated it," he says of the younger ones. "Now they're a little more chill."
To make the experience more pleasant, Thompson will perform multiple dates in most cities. "I'm a little weary of
the previous rock touring model, which is one-night stands," he says. "It's hard to make money doing multiple-night
stands, so you tend not to do that, but whatever. . . . If I'm going to be in San Francisco, I want to be there a few
nights. I don't want to be there for nine hours."
Whether he's playing on his own, with the Pixies or with Grand Duchy, his new collaboration with Clark, he says the
process is the same.
"The goal is to make rock music, between one minute and five minutes long, and it has to be interesting on some
level, whether it's a poppy song or whether it's something really kind of experimental," he says.
"It's all legit. It doesn't have to be anything in particular. There are no rules."Black Francis

I taped Cafe Du Nord last time but I did it stealth and didn't really get to enjoy the show. There is a shelf right by the sound guy, and if the club would let someone just set a recorder there it would be above everyone's head and pointed right at the PA speaker.
I haven't had the time or guts to ask the club about their policy. I know FB doesn't care if we tape, it's just a matter of getting CDN to let us do it. I think I might just bring my little voic recorder and ask the sound guy if I can set it up there. If so, yay! If not, no big whoop. I want to be able to just watch the show this time.

Hello to all! I have just come back from taping the second night of two Portland, Oregon shows at the beginning of a two week West Coast tour for Black Francis (Frank Black). After speaking to Bobby (soundman for Black/Frank/Charles), open taping is allowed at these "Bluefinger" shows. That includes soundboard access as well as running mics. The only stipulation (direct from the man himself) for being allowed to tape is that you DO NOT get in anyone's way (band, crew, audience). So, depending on the venue, it may not work out for you to run a mic stand. I would love to see tapers come out for these shows since this is a rare thing to have open access to the soundboard (and mics for that matter) for recording at Frank's shows.
I say bring your non-stealth equipment and give it a go! CDN is a great sounding room. Though I think an open air recording would be just as good or better than the soundbaord, IMO.

Went to the first night..Show was great, the usual bluefinger songs that he has been playing along with Break My Body, Motorway, Cacuts, Dead Mans Curve, some cover I think and the Water. No acoustic part, started out with Tight Black Rubber Electric
One note, about the open taping, its all good but the actual mixing desk at Cafe Du Nord is all messed up so you cant plug in. A friend of mine and I taped off the board there last year and had problems with it, and they still havent fixed it (they really dont need to for their purposes). So there will be no board tapes coming out of Cafe Du Nord, unless you buy them a new soundboard! |

| The opener is 'Eastern Conference Champions'. If you haven't heard them before, they are worth checking out. The lead singer has a very distinct voice. They are from Philly and they can rock pretty hard. |

First off, I hate my name on here and I can't change it so I never write, but I go back to like the emusic(i think) days. On here atleast twice a week tho.
Cafe Du Nord is across the street and I watched people wait in line the first two nights because I was sick. Got to go tonight and it was awesome. So good to hear Black(david bowie reference) rock again. He sang his heart out and it must have been difficult because it was the 3rd night in a row. He absolutely killed it with Threshold Apprehension and Break My Body and I like how the show gained energy as it went on. I can only imagine how nice some of the songs would have been with Violet backing up. His guitar sounds great, and for the first time in while, I was rocked.
Something I'm getting really tired of is the lame ass fans standing around and acting like its an effort to bounce a foot. How can these people go to shows. Your obviously not lethargic or you wouldn't have made the effort to be there. So what makes you wanna stand like a pole and stare. That's not the point. The point is to get into it. I've been noticing this a lot and it's not only with Frank, but I was hoping Frank fans were different, I was hoping we were oddly quirky enough to not give a shit, to let go. Not true. I'm not kidding you, a couple of guys and a girl were getting into like I was, dancing and singing and generally rocking, and this couple cowered away, only to move a couple feet, then stand there and proceed to grow moss. I can see that during the Honeycomb days, but not now. I couldn't even be that way with Honeycomb. Sorry I guess it's just the blank stare and no movement, it just makes me wanna yell.
Hey Bonedry, I forget what you look like but I didn't see a crazy drunk guy singing louder than Frank this time, so nice work on the 12 steps
