Meat Puppets are playing here tommorow. Does anyone know if they're good live? I love their old stuff but Im not sure if they're still punk or if they are just slow country now?

Meat Puppets back on track
By Hal Bienstock | Special to amNewYork 3:14 PM EDT, August 28, 2007
Itıs hard to say exactly why, but this is a great time to be a member of an indie rock band from the ı80s. In the last few years, ı80s bands like the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr. and Mission of Burma have reunited to critical acclaim, and bigger audiences than they played for in their heyday.
But the reunion of Meat Puppets may be the most unlikely of them all. Not only had founding brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood not played together for over a decade, they went years without speaking as Cris dealt with a drug problem and spent time in prison for assaulting a security guard. Last year, Curt heard through some mutual friends that Cris was getting his life back on track. They started playing together again and recorded a new album, "Rise to Your Knees." Now, the band is in the midst of a short East Coast tour, and Curt says the band sounds as good as ever.
"Weıre better at what we do because weıre more calm," Curt said. "Cris likes to say, we are what we are now. Heıs been through hell, so he doesnıt give a crap what people think." Still, Curt realizes the band has a long way to go to re-capture the glory days, when Meat Puppets appeared with Nirvana on the bandıs legendary MTV Unplugged episode and opened for Stone Temple Pilots.
"The thing for us was that even though we had a hit song (1994ıs "Backwater") and played with Nirvana, we never got hugely famous," Curt said. "So, it didnıt throw me so much coming back down." And even though the band is now playing clubs instead of arenas, Curtıs just happy to be back onstage with his brother again.
"Thereıs something to Meat Puppets that has attracted musicos, fans and musicians," he said. "Itıs hard to describe, because a lot of it is just a vibe, but thereıs something really special about it."
Meat Puppets At the Knitting Factory, Wednesday and Thursday. 8pm, $20. 74 Leonard St, between Broadway and Church St (1 to Franklin St) 212-219-3006 |

They were always part-punk and part-slow country. If it counts for anything, i've heard that the lack of heroin in the veins of Cris Kirkwood has improved their shows, but made them less-unpredictable.

All I know is they were great in '84. That was the only time I saw them and I still listen to Meat Puppets II all the time. Up on the Sun, too.

I know they they were always country and I loved the way they did it, but the new cd sounds like they're not so rockin anymore so Im wondering if they still rock when they play. As of now though I'm thinking it could be a kick ass show cause I used to love the Meat Puppets.

Great and crazy show, all the classics were the highlights for me. One fight even broke out, that was fucked up. Alot of drunk meat puppet fans were crazy there lol. Anyway all in all a good night. :). Btw the bassist looked like he's been through hell, must be the heroin, he did rock hard tho.

Levitated you think you'll get to see them? They seem to be touring alot now. That was probaly the most punk type of show I've been to with all the craziness and everything, it could be the smallish venue had to do with it.

The "usual" would be a europe tour after the usa tour, then a pacific tour (oz, japan), some other shows in usa (if lucky enough a few shows in Méjico) and after that some festivals in Europe and then finally I will have to pray for MP coming to Chile, LOL just kidding, I don't know, I just hope they keep clean (poor Chris, I was totally sad reading BLT's link). If Pixies weren't able to come to Chile, I find it very difficult that the pups come to play in Santiago, although The Breeders came in 2003 (best show in my whole life) so who knows... I think I'm just happy they're playing again!
