| I saw the first 45-48 minutes of the DVD, and I desperately need to see the rest. When the good guys get slaughtered, you actually feel for them. Maybe it was the gazoogahs and tooshes that I want to see more, but I really do think the storytelling it top-notch. |

Watched this not expecting to much as well as being a great film it looks fantastic. Particularly on a new HD tv. I wonder how amazing the HD-DVD is.

yeah, when it came out in theatres i was kind of boycotting it since Mel Gibson is such an ass. but also it looked like a snore-fest to me.
watched it on dvd and i had to admit it was pretty damn good. i like it when a movie surprises me like that. the production design is insane, the acting is great... it truly is a film that takes you into a world that you haven't seen quite in that way.
even though some of the story elements (like the creepy kid) are a little overdone, i thought it all worked since it almost felt like a mythical tale or allegory or something...
if you have to see one film by a jew-hating director, this is the one

I enjoyed it quite a bit but I heard a radio host describing it as "The most powerful movie ever made!" I have to disagree.

where do you get this shit KoK? the CIA may have experimented with these drugs but what do you mean by "are available because of" ? shrooms grow naturally and have done since before there was a CIA. lsd was first synthesised in switzerland, also before the CIA existed.

Well, the mushrooms for certian were being hunted down by the CIA in Mexico. Then a guy... Let me get my book.. Okay I'm in the middle of a workout so I'm not going to spen all day on this but the shrooms were hunted down by the CIA based on rumors of their existence coming out of mexico(eventually found growing in a mountainous valley in Oaxaca). They were successfully found by an affluent couple that was writing a book on mushrooms in general. Okay Gordon Wasson was the guys name. From there the CIA approached a cultivator of mushrooms in the US to see if they could be grown in a greenhouse. From there they made there way into the public.
LSD story is a little more complicated but it made it's way into the publics hands via the CIA...

LSD was the original centerpiece of the United States Central Intelligence Agency's top secret MK-ULTRA project, an ambitious undertaking conducted from the 1950s through the 1970s designed to explore the possibilities of pharmaceutical mind control. Hundreds of participants, including CIA agents, government employees, military personnel, prostitutes, members of the general public, and mental patients were given LSD, many without their knowledge or consent. The experiments often involved severe psychological torture, and many victims committed suicide or wound up in psychiatric wards. The researchers eventually concluded that LSD's effects were too varied and uncontrollable to make it of any practical use as a truth drug, and the project moved on to other substances. It would be decades before the US government admitted the existence of the project and offered apologies to the families of those who had died during the experiments.
The role of 'middle-men' like Al Hubbard (see above) is still little understood and it is likely to be many decades (if ever) before information about their activities is declassified. The precise relationships between government projects like MK-ULTRA and academic research is not yet known, but it is highly probable that agencies such as the American CIA were closely monitoring non-government research in this area. Hubbard is known to have had direct connections to several medical programs during the 1950s, gave LSD to thousands of people, and is known to have worked (possibly simultaneously) for a number of Canadian and American government agencies.
Although the subject is highly contentious, there are those who argue that, whilst LSD eventually proved too unpredictable to be useful as a chemical weapon, it may have found another intelligence use. It is claimed that government agencies such as the CIA may have covertly promoted LSD among American youth, seeing it as a means of undermining and destabilising the emerging alternative / underground culture and the growing anti-war movement.
It is also interesting to compare the fates of high-profile LSD advocate Timothy Leary and that of the notorious but elusive LSD chemist Augustus Owsley Stanley III. Leary was hounded by the police, the FBI and possibly also the CIA and was given a draconian prison sentence for possession of a minuscule amount of marijuana. It is generally accepted that much of the best 'street' LSD that circulated in the western United States and beyond in the late 1960s was manufactured by Owsley, who was immortalized in Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.
When he was apprehended by police in California in late 1967, Owsley was reportedly found in possession of enough LSD to make at least 250,000 trips; notwithstanding his reputation as the world's top illicit LSD chemist, he attempted to argue that this huge quantity was for personal use. After being found guilty, Owsley was given a relatively light sentence of two years, and despite his international reputation and his criminal record, he was subsequently allowed to emigrate to Australia.
There have also been persistent claims of connections between the CIA and members of the so-called "Brotherhood of Eternal Love", most focusing on the mysterious figure of Ronald Stark, a reputed criminal who was alleged to have links to both the CIA and to paramilitary organizations including the PLO, as well as allegedly overseeing one of the world's largest LSD manufacturing and distribution rings, which operated in Italy, France and Belgium.
Though no evidence has yet come to light in the West, it is presumed likely that the Soviet government conducted its own experiments on the properties of LSD during the Cold War.

I worked with a guy who's father was a victim of these tests. He was kept on acid for 77 days straight. I did not know what the deal was until recently but I remember this 250lb Ironworker guy coming to work balling his eyes out because his wheelchair bound fahter had pulled a gun on he and his mother all night long or something like that. When we asked "why?" he said his father was essentially kidknapped (he was in the military) by our government and test were done on him. They kept him on acid for 67 days straight. Now I remember 67 but the book says 77 so I used that. I was 19 at the time.
The book claims the military people used in the experiments were generally guilty of treason or something heavy like that.

How the OSS became the CIA
A month and a half after the war was won, the OSS was disbanded by President Truman, on September 20, 1945. In the following month the functions of the OSS were split between the Departments of State and War. State received the Research and Analysis Branch of OSS which was renamed the Interim Research and Intelligence Service (IRIS) and headed by Alfred McCormack. The assets of the SSU, which now constituted a streamlined "nucleus" of clandestine intelligence was transferred to the CIG in mid-1946 and reconstituted as the Office of Special Operations (OSO). In 1947 the National Security Act established America's first permanent peacetime intelligence agency, the Central Intelligence Agency, which took up the functions of the OSS.

I liked LSD, but didn't like Apocalypto. I think Mel Gibson's violence fetish is disturbing. It looked great, but how many times do you need to see a head roll down the steps or Christ whipped? Is a half hour straight of that kind of violence really necessary?
Is the CIA responsible for Cary Grant taking LSD? Was he a target of MK-ULTRA? I would've loved to have tripped with Cary Grant.

The majority of my reptilian buds are now "captive bred" but I do hear what you're saying. I'm not proud of buying these wild caught animals and often times I wish they were all back in Usambara. But my goal as a hobbyist is to help establish them as readily available "captive bred" in the hobby to take the strain off the wild. This has been done with several species already. Most of the more experienced hoobyists breed their animals. We know that demand for these animals is there and if we can captively breed them the demand for wild ones will vanish. This has happened with Veiled, Jackson and Panther chameleons. I've heard it said that the particaular breed that I have (Deremensis) is supposed to be the next most readily available as captive bred. Although I'm not really seing any as of yet. I'm not even seeing them available as wild caught any more. Ten years ago I had only seen an artists rendition of them. With the pet trade the way it is It's the only way to ease the strain on the wild population. So kiss my fat, reptilian ass.
