i just read philip pullman's "the golden compass"(ie Northern Lights in the uk). it was amazing. the movie for it is coming out later this year, but i don't see how it could do the book justice.

it's not just the story that's great, it's the writing, and Lyra- the most realistic/ loveable tomboy ever put to paper. gone are the trustworthy mentors and comfortable good/evil dynamic. this is a book in which adults regularly lie to children, and characters stay true to their personalities (even where traditionally a writer would have them say or do something that gives the reader hope and an example to follow).

i can't wait to read the Subtle Knife.
