TEN PERCENTER
(May, 1999 - LA2, London)
This gig was amazing but the memory that stays with me is Ten Percenter. The band played it at normal speed and then during the "making jerk.." parts, Frank slowed the tempo right down while he played that awesome riff. I'm smiling now just thinking about it. |

one of my favorite interviews that he did was the one that he did on the FB.net podcast -
He was talking about whether the Pixies would record again or not - and he said that he totally respects Kim's reluctance to record in fear that they will screw up their legacy by putting out a sucky reunion album. Then he said that he is less fearful of that - "In fact - I'm more inclined to say piss on all of that!!" He's unafraid of doing something completely different than anything they've done before -
and so this then led into him talking about how you can't plan the magic, etc. when you're recording - how you just have to let it happen and if you try to plan it out it will just be pretentious etc. it doesn't have to be "the ultimate combination of Doolittle and Surfer Rosa!!" and then came the quote that was one of my favorite FB moments (and I have to paraphrase) -
"and so yes, wouldn't it be nice, wouldn't it be great if I made a record (extreme sarcastic voice) and it just came out so pretty and so perfect that everyone just LOVED it!!! and they said YES - you are the BEST - you are the King of the college rock heap!!!"
I just loved the comical way he said that and it just showed what a great attitude he has. It's all Disco - just go do it!! He's the snake!! ride the snake Frank!!
p.s. - i just spun it again - it's on FB podcast #10 - the interview starts at about 37 minutes in - and then the specific part I was talking about is about 43 minutes in

I've only seen Frank once, at midnight at the Olympia, Dublin, on a freezing Jan night in '96: I remember me and my friend and some other folks were down the front rocking out, and he seemed to look over, came over to our side and started rocking out too! He asked the crowd did they know what Jumping Beans were before the song, and said something like "Y'know, those little things you put in your hand!", pointing to his palm. Before Two Reelers he punched the air and shouted "Let's here it for Larry! Curly! Moe!" and we all cheered!

this may not be considered a best of moment, but back in the day i went to a show with my chick-a-dee. it was a catholics show and we were digging it. although my girl, and i am her man, is into fb she is not quite the fanatic i am; regardless we were both very much enjoying the show.
during the performance, though, someone in the audience was kind of "dancing" with her. that is; it was obvious to me that this person thought they were dancing with her. i pretty much tried to ignore it, as she joked about the guy that thought he was dancing with her.
this in and of itself is not that amusing, but not too long after, i was on an fb site-i think out of germany-where i read a review of a show- this was quite a few years before fb.net. i found it interesting because it was for an fb show i had been at. lo and behold it was posted by the same guy that was dancing with my girlfriend. he gave a really good review of the show, which was awesome, but he then went on to talk about how he was dancing with my girlfriend. he mentioned me trying to distract her from him (which was me tryig to inform her about songs she did not know) and how he made some sort of connection with her.
anyway, just another way that we all look at things differently. even among people that love the man. |

Best: Cult of Ray tour as he ripped off about 8 driving songs (most off Teenager) without stopping in between and the crowd was dizzied up into a churning frenzy. I've often wished I could get a recording of that show from Dallas.
Worst: trying to get a word with Frank after the Dallas show last fall. Fortunately he ignored my drunken attempts at reaching him by angling his imposing back at me like a force field.
I'd rather be anywhere or doing anything |

Way to ruin a thread in 2 words, sk8alX!!!111
Yeah, the Paris gig from the Cult of Ray tour is probably my fave Frank moment. First FB gig for me, and the way they played nearly all the set at full speed, not stopping for even a second between each song (or at least that's how it sounded like) blew me away.
