Hi, was he the man at the first place?
c'était le gars à la première rangée? Sinon y a le gars du son qui je pense a enregistré le concert vu qu'il regardait le spectre à la fin. |

Awe-fucking-some indeed.
As you remember, I had some complaints about the Bordeaux gig but I have none about last night (except that this time the opening band was awful) !
The acoustic solo songs were great (he's really a terrific solo performer).
Headache I Heard Ramona Sing* Velouria* She Took All The Money Abstract Plain Sir Rockabye*
Los Angeles / Band Intro Tight Black Rubber* Freedom Rock Thalassocracy* Your Mouth Into Mine You Can't Break A Heart And Have It Threshold Apprehension Ten Percenter* Massif Central Manitoba* Rockafeller Skank* California Bound Captain Pasty Lolita* Dead Man's Fucking Curve* Re-Make/Re-Model* Robert Onion History Song
Again, not in exact order except the first 8 and last 2.
(* personal highlights of the show)
I still think that Ten Percenter and Manitoba are the 2 "old" songs (with Old Black Dawning but they didn't play it yesterday) that benefit most of the actual format of the band. (maybe Remake/Remodel too)
Also, I now love Tight Black Rubber (especially the chorus, I still think the verses are pretty weak) though it was one of my least favorite track from bluefinger. |

Good to hear you all enjoyed it. It's got me more excited about the UK gig. |

Review part 1:
I think it's definitely one of the best shows of my life. I never thought that Frank would be such a performer, such a showman. I have absolutely no complaints to make about anything about the whole gig.
The gig was not sold out, but there was something like 400 peole I would say. Most of the people were around 30 or 35 years, but there was some younger and older dudes too.
My brother who was outside before the beginning told us that before the show Charles and Jason were outside the venue (breathing the pure air of the South Ouest of France I guess).
We were on the first and second row right in front of The Man, which was really impressive during the whole gig. The audience was perfect: no pogo or moshing (just one stage diving), every one giving a great response and great applauses to all the songs (even the new ones), no one seemed to be waiting for Pixies songs, even if Velouria was really appreciated. I guess everyone was surprised and impressed by Frank's performance. Some people were dancing, lots were shaking their heads in rythm, everyone had smiles on their faces during the whole show.
Like said THS, Frank started by the acoustic part. He was COOL as Frank Black can be: black tuxedo, black leather shoes (no socks again!) and a really nice black cotton shirt. He wore eyeliner and was not perfectly shaved, he wore no sunglasses, which was great, because we were able to see his eyes (that was fucking impressive!).
During the first song (Headache-played in a slower way than the original), he was very close to the microphone and his guitar accidentally hit the stand which made a curious slide sound. He was not disturbed by it, and he did the same thing again intentionally in rythm during the song, which was really fun.
The acoustic part was great, particularly Ramona, Abstract Plain, Sir Rockabye and Velouria (great slow and intense version, and at the end of the song he did the Kim vocal parts).
Another funny thing of the beginning of the show was that during Abstract Plain's bridge, the crowd started to yell (in a cool way like: yeah! that's too cool!), then he suddently stopped, looked at the audience in a very serious way and silently said "what?" with his mouth, and then continued the song.
The version of Sir Rockabye was vocally superb, alternating high notes and low notes, variations, and some discreet screaming at the end. Just perfect.
Then he started the riff of Los Angeles...
to be continued

I just wanna add that the "serious frown" was quickly followed by a large grin ! (but cool moment indeed) |

Thanks for the pics.
A couple of things about your review : - No "c" in Frank ! - Charles N. was absolutely right to kick the dickhead out of the stage (à la McCaffrey !). The stage is the band's garden and any trespasser shall be shot at sight ! - I was the first one to be thrilled by the Pixies songs during the 2001 tour (including where is my mind?) but now that the Pixies toured Europe 3 years in a row, who needs a Pixies song at a FB gig ? (though the acoustic Velouria was awesome !) |

sorry to say that, but if you wanted to hear "where is my mind?" that was not the right place to be...
This is what I FELT. I'm sorry if you don't agree with that. I'm not a die hard fan of FB, just an objective listener. Charles was right to kick out the fan out stage but Charles was not soooooo coooooool with the audience... And If i wanted to hear "where is my mind?"...what's the problem with you ? Damn ! Die hard fans..... I mean that the gig and the music were REALLY AMAZING but i didn't feel a lot of communication with the audience. I felt that the band was here to play (extremely well indeed), take the money and that's all.

The guy's got a solo career, approaching a dozen albums, and you're upset you don't hear a Pixies song? It's not like the band haven't reformed in, say, recent years! |

"take the money and that's all"?!! I can't believe what I'm reading!!
I'd like to, but I can't say I've seen lots of gigs like that in my whole life!
the day you'll be able to perform like that an entire show of an hour and a half without a break, full of talent, emotion, noise, honesty, elegance, violence, generosity, and sweat just "to take the money", hats off! (that day I'll give you my money too -well, if you can write songs as good as FB ones of course)

I think that he's a really talentuous musician, performer etc. but i don't think that he's very close to his fan (maybe i 'm wrong). It's not a reproach or whatever, just a regret. I know that i'm the only one to think that on this forum, but in Ramonville there was a lot of people desappointed by the attitude of the band, there was a lot of people in the place to hear some Pixies songs. So what ? So Cassandra is, i NEVER wrote that FB was a fake or something like that, i wrote that i'm little disappointed of his distant attitude. I don't know personnaly FB (maybe you're a close friend to him), i think he's a really kind person but he doesn't show it on stage, that's all.
By the way, if i want to hear "where is my mind", i have more chance to hear it on a FB than a Patrick Bruel gig....
Anyway, i don't want to create some problems in this forum, i only wrote what i feel during this gig. I think that FB is amazing and it's still true : "let's the music do the talking" ! See you in next FB gig, i hope ! Best regards.

No problem bikinikill, no problem at all: we're just expressing our respective opinions, which are definitely different, that's all. Don't take it personally.
No, I'm not a close friend of The Man but I'm around this place for a little while now, and like all the others forumers (and if you were a regular one, you would surely agree with us) I know Frank's a cool cat that really takes care of his fans (lots of examples about that, but that would be too boring to list them now, but about the show we've both seen just an example: the acoustic part was only played to satisfy fans like us who thought that the previous gigs were too short), and in fact I seriously don't know any other artist who pays so much attention and respect to his fans (the die hard ones or the others).
He's around this forum once in a while chatting with us about music or cooking or other things and some of us had the chance to meet him or his actual or former musicians, and believe me: they're definetly cool and simple guys.
As for the Pixies and Where Is My Mind? you had your chance to see him perform those songs (with the Catholics or the Pixies), in fact he played it too times in Toulouse when he was with the Catholics like other classic Pixies songs, so don't complain. But that's enough: The Man's not a juke box or something! Let the artists play the songs they want to play if you really respect them and appreciate their music.
Like said Ziggy above he's got a solo career for a little whole now, and we're all here because we're Pixies fans, but mostly because we're Frank Black fans. And I don't have any problem if I don't hear Where Is My Mind? at a Frank Black gig. The setlist of the other day was entirely satisfying by me.

I am quite agree. I have the same feeling in Lille. Nothing to say about the song (well play...)but it really seems to me that FB was very Far from his audience and did not let peolple get into the show : 20 song with no break, not a word... |

I feel I was a little blunt in my post above, so sorry if that was a bit offensive.
One thing to remember is that it's relatively early days for this band. I think I'd rather see a fast paced, intense rock show, that something where the artist was trotting out the same tired 'banter' with the audience. |

Bikinikill and guidzie, I can understand how you feel but try to consider the number of song played, the time between each song, and the energy into it. Come on, it's not like they were playing in a rocking chair. It was the 4th frank black & band show I've been to (+ 1 solo and 1 with the Pixies), and I can tell you, seeing him perform that way, I think he tried to give fans something new. Before people were complaining about the fact he barely smiled and stood behind the mic and his guitar, for fifteen years. Now he's giving us a new interpretation of songs.
I also believe people are too much used to fake bands, doing fake encores (two people claps their hand and they come back), filling the show with inane blathering, playing songs 10 songs with the same 3 chords during 6 minutes.
10 songs * 6 mn= 1h filling between songs: 15 mn two fake encores: 5 mn 3 songs for the encores: 20 Total: 1h40 for 13 songs...

I hate to paraphrase a well known annoying vocalist, but "love the difference'.
As remig said, we don't want and shouldn't settle for the same old pap. We should appreciate that Frank is trying something new and different (for him). I'm not a big gig goer, but I'd hate to see the same routine rolled out again and again. Just because it's different, doesn't mean it's bad, just as because you didn't like his interaction doesn't mean you're wrong. ( I guess this is aimed bikinikill).
Surely better to get new, different and uncomfortable, than old, safe and familiar.

It's not about the length of the show or the number of songs played or whatever. It's more about the feeling of being just more a spectator than a part of the show. I feel like FB did not let the door open for the audience at all. Maybe it's due to too much wait but... |

I just wanna remind everybody that we basically all here said what bikinikill said but some years ago ! We were all a bit puzzled at some point by Frank's silence between songs but he explained it here and now we're just used to it and we accept it. |

Hi. I was in Ramonville. It's the first time i see FB in concert.
It was great. Lots of emotion for me during "Velouria", "Abstact plain": song => memories=> tears. I really enjoy "Thalassocracy" also. Love this song: tears => song => hope'n joy !
I must said that i don't know very well his last albums. I was on the first line just in front of the scene and the bassist ding archer. I don't know his "everyday state of mind"(?), maybe he is more introvert than "laughting hysteric" but for me Frank gave energy and soul to the show. And maybe we the public were not so "hot" also? I must not be so easy day after day all along the tour. Thank you guys! Will be there the next time. |
