so whenever i ask little fu (2 1/2 years old) what music she wants to listen to, she responds with fank back. ya, she's got pretty good taste! (she does enjoy tmbg's "here come the abc's and jack johson's curious george.) but mrs. fu wants me to expand her musical horizons and slow down with the brainwashing. so this is what i put together on my new "cool hip young kidz mix". feel free to add any suggestions/comments. i've gave them my personal fu ratings out of 10 as well.

peter bjorn and john: young folks. 10/10 (really really like this song. who are these guys?)

feist: my moon my man. 9/10 (never really got into her, until now....may have to delve deeper.)

spoon: the underdog. 10/10 (thanks dean and carolynanna)

black francis: angels come to comfort me 11/10. (every mix needs a fb song)

grand dutchy: fort wayne 13/10. (this song should go to #1 on casey casem's american top 10)

the decemberists: the crane wife 3. 9/10 (what is a crane wife 3?)

modest mouse: missed the boat 9/10. (been listening to lots of modest mouse lately. did you hear he stabbed himself on stage playing a gig in fargo?)

wilco: either way. 8/10 (thanks floop for introducing me to wilco.)

son volt: the picture. 8/10 (my friend is a big fan but i don't know too much about them.)

the polyphonic spree: section 22 (running away.) 8.5/10. (i'm glad they got rid of the white robes.)

the arcade fire: intervention. 9/10.

the long blondes: giddy stratosphere 8/10.

dinosaur jr: back to your heart 9/10.

interpol: the heinrich maneuver. 7/10. (is it me or does thing song sound like the killers. i liked them a lot better before this song. maybe i just need to give it some more time.)

tv on the radio. wolf like me. 9/10 (frank likes their sound.)

That's jacked up. "Fort Wayne" deserves a 14 out of 10 rating. You should be ashamed of yourself, Fu. You hardly deserve to be a father.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Bjork's It's Oh So Quiet - not that hip anymore, but a nice tune for children, with some viking shrieking for good measure

Tanya Donelly and a bunch of other (mostly) Boston musicians have released a whole record of "indie rock for children". It's called The Rock And Roll Coochicoo Revue.

i'm kinda liking "fidelity" and "on the radio" from regina spektor. they will probably annoy you after a while but i'm sure the wee 'un will like them.

I've got a last.fm account - same name as here - but I can't say I'm using it much these days.

Hey fu, I just saw your email. It was in my spam folder. I guess you shouldn't have sent all those Cialis coupons. Sorry I didn't reply! I didn't go see Dino Jr, I never really got into them. And they'd probably hurt my ears.

But as I said above, you should check out the National. Their latest, "Boxer", has been on non-stop repeat for about a month now.

Not that new, but I really like this song "Benton Harbor Blues" by Fiery Furnaces. The 3 minute remix hidden track at the end of the album is a lot better than the real one, cos it doesn't have all those annoying sound effects and backmasking.

oh yeah, a couple other good ones of theirs are "I'm Waiting to Know You" and "Police Sweater Blood Vow".

I'm not exactly 'down with the kids' anymore when it comes to new bands, but saw this on MTV2 recently and it stood out to me. It's not very original, kind of a cross between Smashing Pumpkins and a band probably no-one remembers called 18 Wheeler, but I can't get it out of my head.

i think the crane wife is a japanese fairy tale.

is it just me, or do the decemberists sound like they want to be nmh? the song names ("pts. 1 and 2"), his voice (kinda), and the way the song fades into the next one. i know a lot of bands do that, but i've never heard the end of a song fade into a weird feedback noise then into the next song like that.

also, i LOVE "young folks". and the video is cool, if you haven't seen it.

I've had The Cult's "Dirty Little Rockstar" on repeat for the past two hours. Available on itunes (note Shineoftheever). Not sure if it's all that great compared to their other stuff but it rocks enough. I'm looking forward to the new album coming out October 2.

yep, i grabbed it last week-end. kind of a cross between electric-era and self-titled era, i wonder if bob rock is the producer. it's only had about 6 plays so far. i too am looking forward to he new release although it might take a couple weeks before i get it, i'm blowing my music budget on concerts right now.

Dan Zanes is really good. Our 18 month old loves it, as well as his Mom and I. We went and saw him play last Saturday morning, and it was incredible. Got a poster signed and we all got a picture with him. Good stuff.

it's called "You're a Wolf" by Sea Wolf. and yes I should be at school right now.

very Gouge Away-esque imo.

"Leaves in the River" is a good one, too.
