a fb fan and budding guitarist played some lead guitar overdubs on some of the BlueFinger tracks, or even on the whole album?? And recorded them?
I know, the album sounds great already, and doesn't need the extra guitar lines, but as some think these songs may have been written for the Pixies it would be interesting to hear what the songs would sound like with a Joey style lead on top.
I'd be interested in hearing it!

for some reason, i doubt these songs were ever meant for the pixies. they simply sound NOTHING like the pixies. they sound like solo frank black, from teenager through christmass, this is frank black.

Yes, agreed it does sound like frank black because it is frank black. Who knows, with the full Pixies behind these songs it could sound like the Pixies. I admit, some songs are less Pixies than others, but some are potentials if they were indeed meant for a Pixies album. |

'threshold' and 'tight black rubber' are the only ones that sound, to me, remotely like the pixies. i guess what i mean is: it's hard for me to believe that these songs were *meant* for the pixies.

Didn't he already tell us they were not meant for the Pixies?
(but, yeah Jezza, I see what you're saying and it might be cool to hear what someone could come up with just for fun!) ______________________ I've seen blue you've never seen |

that doesn't seem to diffuse the rumors. frank's (well, black francis's) press release for Bluefinger pretty much explains it all.
i hope, jezza, that my comments aren't coming off in a dickish manner. i'm all about dreams of joey santiago tearing it up.

Hey Jose, not at all - totally get what you are saying. I know that frank says the songs weren't for the pixies, but just all the pixies talk and lack of lead guitar licks makes me wonder what it would sound like if Joey were let loose on the album. Kinda cool, I reckon. |

Some people can never be pleased. The last Pixies album was more than a decade and a half ago. They're not going to record again. Let it die.
And, er, welcome to the forum, jezza. This is a friendly place, despite my harsh tone in the above paragraph.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Eh, I can't imagine this turning out to well, except as a novelty to listen to once or twice. There would also be the technical problem of dropping things into the mix, never mind screwing something that's fine-as-is. I think that fan's energy would be better spent making up his or her own stuff.
On a related note, Who is that guy who records Pixies covers in the style of Hendrix, Tina Turner, The Beach Boys, Prince, etc? That guy is absolutely awesome---a musical virtuoso and uncanny mimic---but as great as it is, I still only listened twice. And that's the best I ever heard. Can't imagine a fan here doing any better.

Doing pixies or Frank Black cover is quite useless: you're not going to make it different or more twisted, cos FB is already the one who made a twisted version of 60's pop songs. That would be like washing your clothes twice! And about the guitar solos, I dont think santiago is much of a lead guitarist: I cant hear real lead guitars on the first solo album, and that's better that way. Bluefinger also has two guitars (maybe not all of the time) but no solos that's for the best. A LOT of people cant get into the catholics because of the retro guitar hero solos. Personaly I like them, more like a Tenacious D approach (funny but respectfull to rock history). |

You have an amazing way with words, Grotesque. I find it hard to believe you're writing in a second language.

Johnny Marr never played any solos with The Smiths. He is more than capable. Some song/bands don't need solos. I think Bluefinger falls in that category.
Anyway, there's a harmonica solo. Good enough for me. Good enough for John and Yoko.

I didn't say nuffin about no guitar solos. Just a lead guitar part. Which would be good enough for Mr. Marr and the Lennons. |

I agree that BF is *not* a Pixies album but listen to Lolita again and think of Here Comes Your Man or some of the other more melodic songs the Pixies did.

Coastline, I just copy and paste the way people write in this forum when I need a gramatical form, and that's a good exercise for the times I speak with my australian cousins. I'm practicing for free there !
Czar, I recon Here Comes Your Man is NOT very representative of just the pixies: I find it very close to -at least- fifty Frank Black solo songs. Remember it's one of the oldest songs he ever wrote, much before the pixies. This is pure "Charles Thompson" style. At 80 he will surely keep writing that kind of song... |

I know, seriously. Just when I though every nonesense-pop-sing-along word had been invented. Has anyone ever sang "ding-dang"? Ding-dong, okay. But ding-dang is just too much. I can't get that phrase out of my head and the way the song just launches right into it is so incredible....
Meanwhile, Joey Santiago is not a TRADITIONAL lead guitarist, but his atmospherics and restrait make him a giant in the world of innovative rock n roll. And you know from that documentary that he was hearing things about how 'he can't play' on the first few albums so he decided to up the 'shredding' on Trompe Le Monde....
My favorite of which is when he adds his Santiago restraint to Van Halen style tapping for the 'solo' that starts out Letter to Memphis -- just the same tapping over and over on top of the awesome riff FB plays... its just soo rock n roll without being wankery. |
