In paris it's free, if you manage to get into the club, but they'll charge you for 10€ a beer...

... of course, when we say "a beer", we mean "25cl of half-beer, half-water, in a plastic glass".
When James and I went to see Guitar Wolf a few years ago, he went for the drinks and I can't forget the look on his face when they gave him the glasses. There's a reason why there's virtually no night life in Paris.

After work I will get me a ticket. The advance fee is 1,-€ so the ticket will cost me 4,-€ in total. Surreal.
Frank is going to play a one hour set, I was told. And they still got plenty of tickets left. The nice lady on the phone was surprised that I was coming from Berlin to see this.

The thing is, on a normal thursday "indie" night the admission is free at the Prinzenbar. Only this time, because it is somehow special, with Frank Black performing and all, they charge three euros.
I got the ticket for 4,50€. Greedy middlemen, ripped me off! (50% more than the price at the club!!!)
Still can't believe it. The Prinzenbar seems to be a small club. And it's only three hours away from Berlin. Frank is playing there virtually for free. With his new power combo! And I got a ticket in my pocket.
LIFE IS GOOD!
Now the tricky part will be to get back till the next morning, since I have no car and have to be in Berlin at eight o'clock in the morning. Working on it.

the show has not been mentioned in any newspaper, there are no posters. it was mentioned on two (small) websites and on a very small radio-station.
not secret, but almost secret...

Ooh, the anticipation is building up. Not only because of the small venue, the new songs, the new band, all the juicy info in the Paris thread, the chep beer, etc... But ALSO because this is going to be my first FB gig ever.
During the reunion tour I went to see the Pixies in Berlin, after which, while searching the net for a setlist, I discovered the wonders of fb.net. But I never saw him perform his solo stuff.
And Michael, of course I'm going to wear the shirt! If this isn't THE occasion, then what is? I'll have a drink for the other proud owners. Each.
Oh, and no photos or taping from me, I'm afraid. |

Forgot to add... as remig warned me about, beer (25cl bottles of Heineken) cost 8 eu-fucking-ros. I was about to tip the barman but quickly put the coin back in my pocket. Yeah, I'm that cheap.

yes, we had fun. the queue was very long, the prinzenbar was packed. frank and the band all dressed in black (even frank's fingernails!) never been closer to the man... setlist was similar to paris; differnt order: starting with l.a., finishing with black rider, not playing re-make, re-model, no encore. sound was really good, band and audience definitely had a great time.
...and i had to pay 2.50 for a beer.

Yes of course it was great to see frank black after nearly 4 years back in town and it was great to listen to non-pixies stuff. California bound, Old Black Dawning, Freedom Rock, nearly the whole bluefinger… it made me wanna dance and scream and die at a failed stage diving BUT – that is why it wasn’t that great concert for me – at this concert I certainly would have had died if had tried stage diving - it was like: hello, is here anybody else who knows this songs and is absolutely fallen for franks music – there where like 3 people dancing, the rest was nodding their heads or standing around! Dam it! Move your ass! An hour before the concert I was outside waiting for some friends to give them tickets. It turned out that I had one ticket left, and there was a crowd of I think 100 or more people trying to get in. So I didn’t know to whom I should give the ticket (sorry for my English btw) So I decided to give it away for free to the one who could answer the question: whats the name of the yet unreleased album frank black has recorded recently using the name black francis?... No answer. Staring crowd. Second question: Name your favourite song from SMYT…. No answer. Staring crowd. … I gave up and just sold it for the 4 euros I paid. And that’s my point: I enjoyed the concert but either there were just too much people there because he’s the pixies guy and it was cool to be there OR it was just typical concert in Hamburg. Some hundred people with a stick in their ass. I think it was both. I know a lot of people won’t agree with my opinion and everybody should enjoy Franks music the way he/she wants but I wish there would be some more enjoying it the way I do. Ok at the last song people where dancing a little bit more, but guess what song it was: Rockafeller Skank from Fat Boy Slim – finally a song they seemed to know. Dam it!
Concerning frank and the music: it was indeed strange that he didn’t play guitar and just sang. And I think some songs wouldn’t do worse if there was a rhythm guitar in it. But the band was really great I didn’t hear any parts where I thought, they are still working on it. Especially Treshold Apprehension was so intense and just like on the record. The guitarist sang really good backing vocals. Funny situation: after the concert a girl came onto Frank asking for signing a cd or sth. (ok she must have been a fan – I admit :-) and called “Frank, Frank, …” and a guy also started with “Frank, Frank…” and standing in front of him he asked “… where is the toilet!”. Frank was, well, not amused, and just passed by.
So far I really enjoyed it but I hope for a more devoted audience in Amsterdam.

Here's the setlist:
Los Angeles Robert Onion Freedom Rock Lolita Captain Pasty You Can't Break A Heart And Have It All My Ghosts Threshold Apprehension Old Black Dawning Tight Black Rubber Ten Percenter California Bound Massif Centrale Thalassocracy Your Mouth Into Mine Dead Man's Curve Manitoba The Rockafeller Skank Black Rider
What a hard rocking set of songs and what a hard rocking performance!
They played a bit over an hour. All the songs from the Paris show, in a different order, plus Dead Man's Curve.
More later. |

Ok, where to begin?
This was my first visit to the Prinzenbar but I liked it immediately. The location is pretty small, holding about 300 people I was told. All walls and the (quite high) ceiling are richly covered with stucco ornaments and figurines, it has different levels on where to stand, there is this really big mirror over the wooden bar. The place has just a nice atmosphere to it.
The stage is very small and meets with the bar on one end. That was where I was standing. This particular position had lots of advantages. Very near to the band, about third row, with a pretty good view of the band, I was even able to read Frank's and Ding's setlists. Plus I could lean on the counter to enjoy the show and had a constant beer supply. (3,-€ for me,frankburns, since I didn't want to drink that crappy Astra. Don't know what happened to the promised 1,50€.) The only downside of this spot was, that it had one of the speakers right next to it. Therefore sound quality wasn't that great for me.
The show was intense. Frank was rocking out very, very hard and got into screaming mode pretty often. Insane screams! The band looked very concentrated. There was quite a bit of interaction going on between them: exchanging of looks, Frank counting with his fingers or making little gestures.
The drummer seemed relaxed during the whole set. I didn't have the best view on Ding. Who sure has an air of solid punk. Charles Normal on the guitar got into some heavy strumming from time to time an did a good job with the backing vocals. After the show I saw the two giving autographs and later enjoying a beer, chatting with each other.
As ludwig said, it wasn't the most enthusiastic of crowds. People seemed to have their fun, but there wasn't too much reaction going on. I saw a few people singing along or recognizing songs. But had my fun nonetheless. As much as I had enjoyed being part of a happily dancing and singing crowd in front of the Pixies on their last concert in Berlin, this time I was just happy to see the man from this close. From the moment they started I had a grin on my face and sang along. Admittedly, a bit more crowd motion and appreciation would have been nice.
What else? At the beginning of the show Frank opened a bottle of mineral water and it exploded in his hands due to overpressure. Later he asked his roadie for a glass of red wine and had several refills. Oh, and the Prinzenbar is located in St. Pauli's red light district. The ladies who work there are a tough gang with a pretty aggressive marketing and customer acquisition attitude, I learned on my way to the concert. Dangerous turf for an innocent visitor.
Hey, ludwig and frankburns, where did you stand? |

Hi kelladwella,
I was in the middle of the crowd in front of the stage but due to my attempts to dance sometimes I was more left then right and then in the middle again... it was a really small stage :-) and although the prinzenbar was really full to bursting (thanks www.leo.org for this expression) you had just to do a little dance and you had your space :-)... ok. I stop complaining now! It was great and the last songs I decided to enjoy just watching the band too. So I got up the stairs on the little balcony. From there I had a great view over the whole location and the stage.
A colleauge of mine also appeared at the show because one of the roadies is his cousin. We went for a drink in a bar in the neighbourhood but I didn't asked him about Frank I just told him that I'm really into Franks work and not only the pixies. Some minutes later he came whith a package of guitar strings - only the package :-( - and the towel that Frank has used while the show and asked me if I wanted it. I really had to laugh I took the string package to look at it and here's the information: the guitar player played Earnie Ball Strings 10-13-17-30-42-52 string gauges! I didn't know what to do with the towel. no offense to Frank but a sweaty towel is a sweaty towel and a sweaty towel is kind of icky - so I gave it to another colleague who claimed he's lacking towels at home and said it can be washed. You guys will probably kill me for that. :-) I even had the chance to join the band and the tour crew for something to drink, but I thought Frank has leisure-time and it should be just about the music. He isn't Justin Timberlake and I'm no 14 yr old girl. And of course I didn't have the guts! Later that night the dj in that bar played one of franks song. Of course it was from the pixies. And of course it was “where is my mind”. And for a moment I really had the desire to go to Frank and cheer him up.

Sounds like a festival-sized setlist - man, maybe I'll have to get some tickets to Werchter after all!
I'm in the Netherlands from June 23 to July 2nd, which is precisely the week that FB is everywhere *but* the netherlands :-( (Yes, his first show in the country is the day I am flying out...)
Werchter tickets are soo expensive though, even at face value!
