Once again, dear forum, I come to you with a dumbass tech question. Thanks in advance.

My digital camera gets to the point where it won't let me take photos because it says the memory card is full. So I erase what I think is all the photos on the camera and memory card (are they one and the same?) and I load the memory card onto my Mac and the card shows up as empty. There is nothing for me to trash. However, on a friend's PC, the card is full and unless he goes and empties it, I have to buy another memory card. Or depend on my PC-owner friend to occasionally erase the memory card. Any idea how to compell the Mac to let me view (and trash) the memory card's content? Thanks and apologies for being middle-aged and remembering 8 track.

Can you delete the photos just using the camera itself? The 2 digital cameras that I have had have (that's alot of have's) allowed me to delete photos when I'm viewing them on the view screen.

On the Mac, are you emptying the trash before you unplug the camera from the computer?

Thanks and "yes" on both questions, which is why this is so baffling.
(well, re: your second question, I'm not plugging the camera to the Mac, I'm plugging the memory card into the usb, and the card reads as empty)

If you have taken everything off the memory card you can reformat it, that would do it for sure...

I know most cards will use a type of file system that you may want to defragment often, which makes better use of the space, but if it reads as empty then that may not do much.

If you do not get better answers, I would reformat.

The problem could be that the card's file system is being corrupted, there may be newer firmware for your camera.

Reformatting would correct the file system temporarily but you would continue to lose space until you reformatted again.

Hmmm, but why empty on the Mac and not the PC...

People become belligerent discussing this subject:

Or would it happen to be a SanDisk?

I don't know the proper solution to the problem, but the same thing happens with mine. So every time I empty the card into my computer, then I reformat it, using my camera. It takes just a few clicks, though -- can't take more than five seconds.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

I have a Sony camera. Don't know what you have. But on the little dial on top, with all the different choices -- camera, video, play, memory card, etc. -- I choose memory card. Then I look through the little menu for the choice to format it.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.
