I found a thread about laptop but it's 2 years old so I thought I'd make a new one instead. Plus the other thread was filled with posts about gay porn.
Anyway. Seems my PC crashed yesterday (I hope I'll be able to recover the stuff on the hard drive, it's full of BF boots). The poor thing was 5 years old and unsufferably slow anyway. So I thought it's about time to get a new one, and I'll go for a laptop cause my apartment is so damn small. Here's some info: I don't want a Mac; I won't use it that much, it's basically for downloading music and videos and the like; I don't play video games; I think it'll stay at home most of the time unless we go on holiday or something, but I won't take it to work; and I'd like it to be Wifi ready. So, what do I have to check before buying? I don't know shit about computers (despite being a computer engineer myself - don't ask). What are the minimal requirements to get something useful? Any brand in particular?
This is probably the most boring thread I've ever made here.

But let's first explain to everyone (or at least me): what is Wifi ready? |

We're in the same boat, Denis. My iMac crapped out over the weekend. I'm not going to be buying again for awhile (can't afford it), but I'll still be doing research for awhile until I do. And damn, I hope I can recover my FB collection. That and the family photos. The rest is just 1's and 0's, but those are the unreplaceables.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

I'm happy with my Acer. Bought it a year ago. They make it easy to reset the hard drive if you run into virus galore, but I never hook it up to the internet anymore because it's for writing novels and so on...
I'll be by the pool, playing with my guns. |

It is a boring thread and deserving of an equally boring answer.
From my experience Toshiba, Dell and Sony are all good. I would have said IBM as well but they are now owned by Lenovo, and are thus a bit of an unknown quantity.
Also, buy the mobile version of the CPU’s wherever possible as this will mean a much longer battery life.
Pretty much all Laptops come bundled with wireless nowadays plus Bluetooth and card readers etc. The only thing to watch with wireless is the type as this will affect the connection/download speeds, don’t ask me to describe them in detail but you can have wireless ‘b’, ‘g’ and now ‘n’ I think.
Also, I would choose a laptop with a ‘wide angle display’, it makes a big difference.
Computer magazines will always tell you that you should always buy the highest spec’ machine that your budget will allow - I think that this is pretty good advice (not that I ever read computer magazines, just want to get that straight)
Trust that this was boring enough for you.

I'm usually in charge of buying laptops for the big fishes at work, but they usually give me their choices in advance, because they like the picture or have seen it advertised in their favourite TV show. Assholes. Anyway, I never had a problem with Fujitsu-Siemens and Lenovos. Toshibas are fine as well. Sony Vaios will make you the most popular guy in the class but you'll have to pay for the extra coolness, same shit with different design. Acers may look good and sure they're cheap, but if you've got a problem with some component make sure to be in good relationship with your god. You only begin to consider warranties and support when your boss calls you in the middle of your coffee time because the screen freezed.
I always recommend to my friends to do a list with the ones they like from the brands above and then let me look at the specs and choose from the list. I mean, externally like. Laptops are something very personal and, even if you've got the most powerful machine around, if you don't feel comfortable with it you won't like it. That said, I prefer the 15-something inches ones if you need it to be portable (a 19'' monster isn't a laptop) and like them to have big RAM and HD, just because it's more expensive to improve them later and will assure a longer life.
Don't know if that helped you.

This thread is the nadir of my career at fb.net. My PC wasn't even dead.

I didn't even give out advice and I'm a tad irritated by this betrayal of forum trust.
I shall consult with my lawyer forthwith.

I am happy with my Toshiba Satellite. The only thing I do not like is Windows Vista. I long for Windows xp.
So, I recommend you do some comparisons between the two before going with Vista.
It's not you I don't like

The screen was dead though. Does that make you feel better?
(I bought another one at a yard sale for €3)
