That's a hilarious way to go about writing a song: Offer the job to someone else and when he does it, say: Aw, fuck it, I did it myself.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Wasn't that the story with TOTY? Frank was lagging on lyrics and EDF and someone else (?) as a favor wrote what they thought was Frank Black space lyrics, and the poor quality (or imitation) of those lyrics spurred Frank to get it done.

That’s why there are so many songs on the album. But I did have writer’s block with the lyrics – I used to drive up into the hills of Malibu in my Cadillac, listening to music, playing my guitar. It was an excuse – that’s why I kept writing music, because I couldn’t write lyrics! I’d keep showing up at the studio, and they’d say, ‘So, have you got any lyrics?’ and I’d say, ‘No, but I’ve got a new song!’ Finally, the engineer and co-producer, Al Clay and Eric Feldman, said we couldn’t spend any more money recording backing tracks, so without asking me – it was genius on their part – Al and Eric one day composed lyrics to one of the songs, trying to be me – some spacey science fiction topic. They were very sheepish about it. They said, ‘We just want to stimulate you.’ Well, I sure as fuck was stimulated! I was horrified! ‘No way – this just sucks!’ I was mad! Was I annoyed because I was so easy to pastiche? Maybe I wasn’t yet aware of my own clichés or the image that people had of me… It was creepy, or disturbing, or something. It got me so fast up in the hills of Malibu! The first song I wrote was Freedom Rock.

That's from the Album By Album interview Cooking Vinyl released to the press (French version available on Blackolero ;) ).

Nice find, Czar, very interesting indeed. Didn't Kentucky Prophet generally get an awful time from the crowd when he supported FB?!

I'd like to mention that I do not spend my time surfing on MySpace but I just set a Google Alert on "Threshold Apprehension". Thank you.

Ah, Google Alerts, what'd we do without 'em-I know I'd be posting less articles!

I read his myspace blog during the tour (don't know if those entries are still up). I think he generally wrote about going over well with Frank's audience, with an indifferent crowd here and there. When I saw him in Dallas, the crowd mostly seemed to enjoy him (which he wrote about in his blog). I liked him, at least!
