Yeah, me too. I think all I've ever heard are "Istanbul Not Constantinople" and "Birdhouse in Your Soul," and I love those songs. Occasionally I hear FB say nice things about them, and I think I should buy an album. I'd be interested, like Brank_Flack, in hearing where's a good place to begin.

They Might Be Frank Black is a great place to start.
The albums Lincoln and Flood are excellent primers. And "No" is the better of their two kids (but not just for kids) albums.

I've just got 'A Users Guide To They Might Be Giants'. I too was interested in them after hearing them mentioned by FB and by forum members. I'd recommend this if you want to hear a variety of TMBG songs, then work from there onto albums.
It's a decent length too, it's got nearly 30 songs on it.

"A Users Guide To They Might Be Giants" is pretty much a primer of what they play at their live shows.
Flood is generally thought of as their best, and it's a good place to start. Flood is also the album that Frank Black had as the only tape in his car for a couple months, so the story goes. He didn't like TMBG, but he had nothing else to listen to, so it grew on him.
I think "John Henry" is their best album, and it's their first album that uses a full backing band. Previous to John Henry they used drum machines and samplers for the rhythm section.
The brand new one "The Else" is also very good. It's the first one I've liked as a while album in a while.

Only got Flood but that's really accessible. Also heard Ana Ng and Dont Let's Start which are really good tracks.

Back in 1994 I discovered TMBG (and FB). It was a great year. I became gaga about TMBG they way I now am about Frank Black.
Here's my opinion:
You've gotta start with FLOOD! That's the first one I got. Classic.
(I also enjoyed Apollo 18)
Oh, and those guys are right, JOHN HENRY ROCKS!!

| The first time I heard of them was when I saw the Birdhouse In Your Soul video, when the song first came out. My sister got the 7" single. Some years later, I bought the 7" of Don't Let's Start with a bunch of other singles in a little record shop sale. But I haven't got any of thier albums. A friend is a fan, and met Linnel and Flansburgh after a gig years ago, Flans was wearing a TOTY T-Shirt, and he chatted about The Pixies with one of their tour crew, who happened to have worked on the Bossanova tour. |

It has their first two albums plus a crap load of extras.
Which album has Ana Ng? That song is a classic.

I was a casual fan until I saw them live in 1992 & it immediately elevated them to godlike status. I've seen them live more than any other band. I think they're really underrated... if you really listen to the music you'll hear how twisted, dark & just plain weird it is.
I would recommend Lincoln (my favorite duo album) or John Henry (my favorite full band album) to get started, but it's all good. |

I saw them live a couple of years back. Linnel screwed up part of a song Flansbergh was pissed. Hhe started playing over him (Ana Ng) and moved to the rear corner of the stage.
It was super awkward, like my parents fighting or something. But it was still one of the best shows I've ever been to.

Flood. actually it is the only one i have heard. but my advice is this: listen to it and decide if you like it and don't worry about what others say. Plus: if kfs says it is good, it is.

I've sorta liked TMBG for a while now, haven't really bought any albums, just know a couple of songs (dr. worm, experimental film, thermostat). I think Dr. Worm was the first one I ever heard.
Oh yeah, and seeing them at Borders a year ago was awesome, too bad the line for autographs was so long I just left.
Still hooked on cellophane... |

But the encore has evolved along different lines. At a certain point, it became [cco: no itals: ]de rigueur, so expected that performers began to plan on it. They Might Be Giants, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based alternative group, has calculated the precise amount of time to be offstage before returning for the encore.
"People start stomping their feet at around 45 seconds, and we return to the stage after 60 seconds," said the band's John Flansburgh, who wears a watch at shows to get the timing just right. "It's just the arc of a crowd. After that minute, some people will feel like you're not being generous. Some people will start booing for more."
Flansburgh said bands that don't play encores risk being seen as stingy. He said a band that plays 16 songs then comes back for a four-song encore will be more appreciated than a band that plays 20 songs and leaves. "If you care about an audience, doing an encore makes them feel like you've recognized their power," he said.
"There have been times in our lives when we have spontaneously gotten four encores, and I have to tell you, those are some of the happiest days of my life," said Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants, which usually plans two encores. Those extra encores, he said, most often come outside the U.S.
"Spontaneity happens in the tertiary cities of lesser traveled European countries," Flansburgh said. "You're playing for people who are very aware that they might never have a chance to see you again. They show you enthusiasm in a very uncynical way."
Flansburgh, an unapologetic fan of the encore, says it gives fans more to remember. "It's a way for the show to end twice," he said, "which just makes it that much more glorious." |
