These threads have tended to run wild in the past, but let's give it another shot. This time, you have to explain why you like a particular lyric. You can post as much or as little of a song as you like, but you MUST justify your choice, not just say that you like it.

So without further ado:

"I remember redwood trees, bumper cars and wolverines
The ocean's Trident submarines
Lemons, limes and tangerines."

"I remember this defense
Progress fails pacific sense
All those sweet conspiracies
I remember all these things"

REM - I Remember California

This song seems to me the height of REM's wistful, nostalgic kind of song. It almost evokes a kind of 50's, nuclear family, cold war as distant threat, girls with big skirts kind of atmosphere. It's one of my favourite REM songs for that reason. Sigh. We all remember stuff.

Buys his meat from a whore next door. Wants it rare but he gets it well
(Weasel and the White Boys Cool/Rickie Lee Jones)

It just kills me that this incisive gem was dreamt up and scibbled on napkins by some scrawny waitress scratching by. And sure Tom Waits fell in love with her around then. I can see that.

The Chameleons - Here Today

"Don't know what happened
But somebody lost their mind tonight
Not sure what happened
But I don't think I got home tonight
And there's blood on my shirt

The clap of thunder
And I see my life go flashing by
The smell of sulphur
And I weep as I embrace the sky
I heard somebody scream

My chest is burning
I think someone set my soul alight
Don't know what happened
But I don't think I got home tonight
I wonder why
I wonder why

Ahhhh, there's madness here today
Ahhhh, I think I'll go away

Where is my wife?
Where is my wife?
I'm draining away
I'm draining away
(Draining away)
Here today"

Written by Mark Burgess a couple of months after John Lennon's murder. Nothing fancy but I think it evokes the tragic pointlessness of Chapman's actions. One minute you are famous and alive and walking along a New York street, the next you have 4 bullets in you with your life blood draining away.

Whenever I listen to this song I'm transported back to 1980 and the shock I felt when his murder was announced on the news.

it's like i climb a waterfall

Teeth by Kristin Hersh

i love it cause my wife is quite short and i'm quite tall, so whenever we cuddle or hug, she has to stand on tippy toes and hence the song.

Another big explosion
Leaving you hoping
That something that once
Held you down
Could leave you feeling
On the ground

The confusion that persists
Decisions that you guessed
The one to stay and watch this
The one you might have missed

All the things I haven't seen
Once the final curtain has been raised
The act we act is wearing thin
The act we act we under my skin
The words the words we said goodbye
The words left choking in my mind
The act we act is wearing thin
I think we wear it out again

it's not really the lyrics that get to me, it's more how they're sung.
i really should have posted this in the dedicate a song thread for kathryn.
i'm on a sugar high today

I only wanted the high
Wasn't much more to my life
I couldn't wait to come down
There's nothing here but the ground - Listerine/Kristin Hersh

Love is nothing, nothing, nothing like they say
You have to get up and meet the people everyday - Love Is Nothing/Liz Phair

In case you need to know how to climb down and what to do next

Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday, dear (supply honoree's name)
Happy Birthday to you

The joyous and evocative "Happy Birthday to You" is a song which is sung to celebrate the anniversary of a person's birth. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, "Happy Birthday to You" is the most popular song in the English language, followed by "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" and "Auld Lang Syne." The song has been translated into many languages, though it is often sung with the English lyrics even in countries where English is not a primary language.

The melody of "Happy Birthday to You" was written by American sisters Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill in 1893 when they were school teachers in Louisville, Kentucky. The verse was originally intended as a classroom greeting entitled "Good Morning to All". The version as we know it was copyrighted in 1935 by the Summy Company as an arrangement by Preston Ware Orem, and is scheduled to expire in 2030. This was the first known written version to include the lyrics. The company holding the copyright was purchased by Warner Chappell in 1990 for $15 million, with the value of "Happy Birthday" estimated at $5 million.[1] While the current copyright status of the song is unclear, Warner claims that unauthorized public performances of the song are technically illegal unless royalties are paid to them. This is why it is rarely used in the film and television media.
It is unknown, but speculated upon who wrote the lyrics to "Happy Birthday to You." This is why it is rarely used in the film and television media.

If they don't know who wrote the lyrics, then nobody can claim any royalties. Surely this should make them use it more?

The world must have really sucked before this song was written -- somewhere between 1893 and 1935. I bet they didn't even have birthdays back then.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.
