Threshold Apprehension is the second track reviewed in the programme below. Health warning: none of the three guests rate it. Selected comments -
'I had to review a Frank Black concert, it went on for three hours and was terrible'
'The White Stripes do the Pixies better than the Pixies'
'It's really flat'
'Bit of an odd bloke, that Frank Black'

Just looked on the 6music website and apparently this link will only work for 7 days. It was broadcast on the 26th April so it'll probably be gone in a day or two.

Is there any way to listen with WMP? I don't really want to install Realplayer.

i often hear from people who dont like the pixies / frank black that they just "don't get" them. surely not getting something is more a sign that you're just not capable or not yet ready to appreciate something that's actually very good. i mean, i could say quite confidently that i think the fray are shit, it's not because i don't get them. it's because they're shit. if you don't get something, don't slag it off. just realise you're probably better suited to shittier music.

I suppose that the sorry truth is that the majority of the people who genuinely appreciate music, and have a patience and general love of a subject, well, they simply can't be bothered to lower themselves to sitting back and being mere music journalists. Happily, they're trying to make it as musicians themselves, rather than sit back issue forth empty statements of criticism.

Just listen to them blowing the White Stripes; they're saying stuff that "uberfans" could easily say about FB... about his productivity, and attitude to releasing music without great concern as to whether it'd be crowd pleasing or not. Well, anyway, you sense that a couple of the idiot journos on that show are following a trend. Perhaps they'd hate the White Stripes if they weren't so acclaimed, currently.

They can't even get the fucking facts right. "Uh, threshold apprehension, it's the name of one of his paintings".

Just a few facts about the participants on that show:
Steve Lamacq (the presenter) is also a journalist and was very dismissive of TOTY when it came out (2 stars out of 5 in Q Magazine).
Steve Levine is a bit of an 80's dinosaur (best known for producing Culture Club).
Andy McCluskey used to be in OMD (who were ok) but went on to mastermind the musical abomination that was Atomic Kitten.

Given the above it's not surprizing that TA didn't make much sense to them.

Lurpak is stuck in a britpop rut. I listen to 6music a lot and you can almost put money on him playing elastica every session he does.

On one hand I find it a shame they were so critical. I'm quite sure last time I heard the show they gave Maximo Park's new single a good rating, this despite it being a clear early-Blur rip-off. So I'm not surprised. Frank isn't fashionable, nor should he be. If it got top reviews everywhere and did really well and everyone became a FB fan, we'd be sad...

As Frank says, he's not in it for chart success and stuff, he's part of the underground! Yeah! Lurpak is way past his best, it's quite rare he plays anything new or interesting when I listen to his show. In fact Marc Riley's show is probably better for that kind of thing. Heck sometimes I even switch to XFM (!!!) from Lurpak, just so I *don't* have to listen to another Maximo Park or Futureheads song...

Threshold Apprehension has been 'Rebel Playlisted' on BBC 6 Music. This is where people are encouraged to email in to vote for the song they want to hear, that narrowly missed the playlist.

To vote go to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/shows/steve_lamacq/ (scroll towards bottom)

I think it was unfortunate, given the panel listening, tbh. Most music journos practically wank over the Pixies, don't they? And there was very little actual critique of the song, just "uh, I don't get it" - oh and "it's not as dynamic as the White Stripes". Well, if dynamic means a song that's all over the place and lacks cohesion, then I'm quite happy about that, frankly.

As a huge Frank Black fan who listen and buy absolutely everything he does and dig about 95% of it, I really feel T A is a bit vulgar.
Now that doesnt mean that radio guy is right. Actually he's quite vulgar too!
I'm both angry with the choice of T A as a single and the dumbness of the young rock critics.
What else to do, wise guy, would you ask me ? Anything but that. ANY song of Bluefinger (like I would say ANY song but "Dont want to hurt you" on the best of).
Being a FRank Black fan is sometimes like KNOWING that 95% of what he does is pure gold but accepting he will be known and criticized for his weakest stuff...

I feel the opposite really, I've sometimes been frustrated by the singles that have been released by FB not being the strongest (imho) on the album. However with TA I feel it's great single material, and as I said above sounded great on the radio. I don't get how this could ever be classed as weakest? I'm so excited about this song still!

Grotesque, you can't be serious about TA. This is rock & roll, mon vieux! Yes, its sounds absolutely juvenile, but ain't this refreshing?

Well these two ultimate posts make me feel happy.
Happy to be "wrong", I mean: to be alone against T A.
I really think FB needs a good publicity now, if T A can be that publicity, that's perfect. It's like DIG FOR FIRE for the pixies, a lot of people used to say to me:
"-oh yeah, the pixies... they have that cool funny song, Dig for Love or something.
-Dig for fire? Urgh... Well if it makes you listen to the rest of Bossanova, that's allright!"
But sorry, I cant lie, I'm a BIG rock fan and T A sounds fakely juvenile to me. Not awfull at all, just a bit artificial, and rock'n'roll must be 100% true or nothing at all (even a Ween or Butthole Surfers song can be 100% true in his twisted black humor). I was surprised myself that this particular song (and just this one on Bluefinger) fitted so well to FB declarations about his "fake new pixies songs".
At the same time I dance like a teenager on "Tight Black Rubber", so whatever...

it's not fake, but it's "cute" when you don't expect it to be "cute", so it makes you quite confused.. but, this is FB/BF at his best, i guess..

Ok, sorry I suppose it's not obvious. The show should start playing as soon as you click the link. If you click the forward 5 min button a couple of times in the top left corner, it should take you to around the point where TA comes on. It's an hour long show and TA is reviewed about 10 minutes in.

Hardly surprising given the fact that Elastica were signed to Lamacq's record label.
