I once went too a memorable Black show in the town I live in (which made it extra special). He wore a white casual long sleeve dress shirt with sleeves rolled up. I was used to always seeing him play in black, which is one of the reason's I love F.Black. He has that Johnny Cash thing going on. Black is significant for F. Black. I witnessed the power of the man on another occasion the following year in my town and he played California Bound. Those Lyrics rang true. Listen to it(tonight). I do not live in California(used to). I want to quiz you. Can you guess what town the show was in? hint: "I saw the ghost of Johnny Horton".

Regarding the original question. The music is just amazing. So beautifully diverse. I can listen to his albums over and over without tiring of them. He's also extraordinary live. I also like the way he shuns the mainstream music press and just kinda does what the hell he wants. The man's got character

I have finally pin-pointed the reason I love Frank's music so much (besides the obvious fact that he is the greatest songwriter/musician in the universe). Frank Black is to music what Andy Kaufman is to comedy. When Andy began wrestling women and giving wild, sexist speeches, people found it vulgar and offensive. When FB began using a lo-fi live-to-two-track recording method, people had a similar reaction. Both artists paid no mind to the audience and critic reactions, and continued blazing their trails through their respective, untamed artistic wildernesses---because that is what they wanted to do.
Kaufman always dreamt of having his own television special in which he conversed with a puppet and at one point, the picture will start jumping up and down, giving the appearance of technical diffficulties for a few minutes. The intent was to cause everyone in America to simultaneously get up and hit their televisioon set, thinking that their horizontal hold is acting up. Mr. Black always dreamed of going to Nashville and recording an album with a bunch of country, folk, and rock legends. It was this dream that brought us Fastman Raiderman. Kaufman knew that the fans of his character "Latka" from the show Taxi would not enjoy or even "get" his TV special, just as Frank knew many Pixies fans would not enjoy FM/RM. The point here is that neither one gave a shit--they did exactly what they wanted to do. There is a purity in the works of artists like this (mainly in music--I am by no means a comedy buff--just saw a good comparison). The purity that I speak of bears much fruit... Rapid-fire album production an an enormous catalogue.
Why the hell does it take bands six years to put out an album anyway? Shit, or get off the pot! Not too many musicians can do what Frank does. Well, thats why I like Frank. |

I love Frank because he is so real. His voice is phenomenal as he sings so many different ways. I don't know, but I like to imagine he does what he does because he can't see himself doing anything else. He has a passion for his music and he creates his music for musics sake, not for money or to be #1 on all the countdowns. I believe he does it because he wants to please the fans he has had from the beginning of his career and to please the new fans like myself. He doesn't want to be the person who has been around forever trying desperately to impress the young, but instead he is the singer who I will be listening to when I am 60, while everyone else is listening to country or whatever older people listen to when they get older. He gets me going in the mornings, he helps me concentrate on my loads of classwork, he makes grocery shopping fun, he help me clean my house, he lifts my spirits when I am down, he helps me when i feel like my portion of the world is trying desperately to crash down around me, he lifts me higher when I am already elated, and he keeps me grounded. Frank and his music is like my secret best friend. His music touches my heart and hugs my soul. That is why I love Frank.

I think Frank has a real deep understanding about what aspects of music provoke emotional reactions in the listener. I don't know whether it is a unique gift brought about by the makeup of his brain, or whether it comes from just spenidng literally thousands of hours strumming away on a guitar to find the secrets. I would hazard a guess that it's the latter.
Whatever the reason, he has the magic that's for sure. Not just inspired chord changes here and there which bring the hairs on the back of your neck up. Consistent, career long developement and real devotion to his art. He is a master craftsman.
Also on a more basic level, i think that his music is so great because it is a reflection of him as a human. Not that i know him or anything, but i'm sure everyone can agree that he has a wild fascination with everything around him (science/technology/evolution/the universe etc..) and that shows in the music.
Frank is really the best, i am so glad that he is around making music in the tiny window of time i happen to be alive. That sounds stupid but i consider myself lucky to be in this position. I honestly believe he is the best songwriter that has ever lived, and i don't have to talk about him in past tense. |

I love Frank Black because he writes beautiful songs and fed me constantly and regularly with albums for the last 13 years unlike many contemporary pop artists.
Thanks to him I am a musician and I discovered Bowie... and so on...
He's my reference point in music.
And (therefore) I think he's pretty.
And I'll sing with him as soon as possible.

I love Frank Black because his words and music have always had a sense of 'otherness'. From the very beginning, The Catholics, Nashville - it's always there and almost indefinable. Other artists have this quality (eg 1970's Bowie) but it's usually compromised by artifice, pretention and contrivance; with Frank Black it's completely natural and organic and that's what makes him so consistantly exciting and startling.
Am I making any sense?
I love Frank Black most when you have no idea which direction a song is going, when you think 'how the hell did he come up with THAT??!!'.

Well, on a serious note. The Pixies are often quoted by musicians as the reason they picked up a guitar and started a band.
The same was true for me. As a result, I've been in several bands, made lifelong friends, met my wife, and had amazing experiences along the way.
So, I owe a debt of gratitude to Frank Black for inspiring me to get my ass in gear and do something rather than just dream about it. I'll be a fan until the end.
And because he consistently blows me away with his originality and "I don't give a shit, I'll do it my way" attitude.

| Seven years ago a friend lent me a tape. It was the first Frank Black and the Catholics release. I became a fan once I heard the much maligned Six-Sixty-Six. Up to that time I never heard of FB or the Pixies. Now I'm hard pressed to listen to anything but his music. |

It's a great topic, a great question to pose, because it's so difficult to put an answer into words.
Black Francis/Frank Black's music is the soundtrack of my life. Since senior year of high school (spring 1990) when I was blown away by 'Doolittle' through the Pixies' dissolution and then through each step of his fascinating post-Pixies evolution, his voice and incredible music have been there with me. |
