I just checked when I registered for this site, it was nearly 5 years ago. Granted I hardly post nowadays and I hardly listen to Frank or the Pixies either. Makes me think how much has changed since the first time I posted here in terms of music my life etc

I'd be suprised if your not richer than me, don't let the executive part of my job throw you. Its a good job but not well paid, probably equivelant to about $23,000 or something. Just a guess. I see a trend with the beards, hopefully this will stop when a female posts.

i think beards are underrated. i loved having my beard. and i never bothered trimming it...so it grew all haphazard and stuff... but i was living in outback australia, so i found i fitted in better when i looked feral.
but ah yes, the 'executive' bit does conetate a rather healthy wage...which $23000 (dollars in whatever currency) isn't particularly outlandish... maybe we should add another question of 'previous years taxable income'
all i can say, thank god for polio! brian |

Then: Age: 32 Occupation: journalist Marital Status: married Listening To: Frank Black, Pixies, Kristin Hersh, Pinback
Now: Age: 37 (soon) Occupation: "webmaster" Marital Status: married Listening To: Frank Black, Kristin Hersh, Pinback and just about everything Rob Crow does, Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, John Zorn, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, and ain't Benji right about Gorecki, have you heard those string quartets? It occurred to me that the first one (dated 1988) sort of has those loud-quiet-loud dynamics going.
Other Stuff: Seen FB & Catholics once, Throwing Muses once, Kristin Hersh twice, bought a house, visited New Zealand and Australia, wrote in Blackolero

Ha, I would take a guess at many peoples previous years income would be next to nothing. I checked up I actually make $27,000. I like having executive in my title, makes me feel important and like I can make decisions which I can't really. Ha.

then: 24 occupation writer listened to FB, Tool, Leftfield blabla
now: 27 occupation writer/musician listen to pretty much the same stuff though way less FB and more Balkan/Greek/Mideast music plus all things Mike Patton
in the interim: grew the FB.net beard, don't plan on shaving in near future, the hassle the hassle...moved from south Spain to north Spain, wrote two books, learned how to play flamenco, gigging now and then as clown/acrobat, fell in love, learned how to speak Italian and not eat meat without looking like I just strolled out of Dachau.

Mine will be lame, as not much changes in a year (I joined March 2006), but this is a great thread, and I wanna play, too ...
Then: 33 Occupation: Journalist Marital status: Married w/ 2 kids Listened to: FB, Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan
Now: 34 Occupation: Journalist (but my newspaper will be laying off people in a couple months, and I'm a little worried) Marital status: Married (10 years in August) w/ 2 kids Listening to: Too much FB, but also a lot of other things I've discoverd as my appreciation for music has grown (which is indirectly attributed to things I've learned from studying FB's music and participating on this forum)
Other: I wore a goatee for 12 years, and shaved it off on Saturday, instantly making me look 12 years younger (not in a good way) and 25 pounds heavier. I'm growing it back frantically as I type this. Anybody know any great exercises for quickly growing facial hair? Beyond my obsession with facial hair, one of the big differences between a year ago and now is this forum itself. I'm on here constantly, I feel like part of a community I'd never known before, and I have surprisingly (to me) made some friends. I've seen FB once since I joined.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Now: 20 Occupation: uni student Marital Status: single (as in i'm not married) Listen to: FB, the beatles, pixies, radiohead, sigur ros, lots more bands (it was only after pixies that i really got into music)
Other: long hair > short hair > long hair > short hair. developed facial hair...

other: My soon to be wife moved from my hometown to live with me in Paris, I traveled a bit (Spain, Portugal and Italy). I saw FB twice and the Pixies once. Like Malax, I'm a rare poster. Just checked and I joined 7th October 2003 which surprised me. Time flies and all that.
Then: Age: 36 Occupation: Chartered Surveyor Marital Status: Married with 2 kids Listening To: Pixies, Frank Black, Grandaddy, The Chameleons, Joy Division, Nick Cave, Radiohead, Stereolab, Faith No More, Eels, The Divine Comedy, Rush (put that one in for Cheeseman)
Now: Age: 40...yikes Occupation: Chartered Surveyor...but importantly now working for myself Marital Status: Married with 2 kids. Hoping for status quo. Listening To: Pretty much the same + Interpol, Midlake, Cinerama/Wedding Present. Grandaddy/Jason Lytle now reached godlike status in my book and vying for top billing on the stereo.
Other Stuff: No beard although daily shaving discipline has lapsed. Saw FB and Pixies once. Other gigs pretty sparse. Ventured to far off lands such as Northumberland, Cornwall and North Yorkshire. Moved house - gained large garden now full of spuds and with newly erected top class fruit cage. Red wine habit now fully developed with cases having to be couriered in on regular basis - bored with courier asking if "we are having a party". Saved up and bought quality hi fi equipment - bliss. Purchased rowing machine to keep post 40 belly at bay. Oh....Fb sig has also died. |

I go through phases where I post daily. Never much to say, really.
Joined 9/22/2002 (migrated over from the AbstractPlain list). More like 4 1/2 years, I guess.
Then: Age: 21 Occupation: Call Center Supervisor Marital Status: Married w/1 kid Listening to: Frank Black, Unrest, Shudder to Think, Flux of Pink Indians, the Clash
Now: Age: 26 Occupation: US Dept. Homeland Security (feh.) Marital Status: Married w/2 kids Listening to: Scott Walker, John Cale ...my last.fm page
All-in-all things have improved. Went from renting a townhouse to owning a home. Pay is pretty good. Wife is finishing up her degree. I've had a beard for about two years now.
I think my signature has pretty much been the same, too.

Only joined last year, been a fan since '88 though.
First get the beard bit out of the way. Don't care much for beard talk. Had a beard 'bout seven eight years. Knew the exact day to shave it off (That was about six years ago). I'm like that, I know exactly when to do things. Sara said that's better, now we can see your face.
Then: 41 Occupation: Make illustrated books Marital status: Single Listened to: See below
Now 42 (born 3 months before Charles) Occupation: Same Marital status: Engaged (summer wedding) Listening to Charles, Kristin, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Rickie Lee Jones, Young Gods, Tricky etc.
Other: Seen Charles play in all guises 'least 20 times since '88. Travelling to India summer to do a book about... India. What else? Oh yes you guys. Genuinely happy I found you.

Heh, more has changed than that post suggests really. Then undergrad student, now near completing my third degree. Then lived in Birmingham, since then spent a year in Sheffield now living London wise with the best housemate ever. Then, quite horribly depressed, now sickeningly chirpy. I've also read many books and had my first hint of a suntan. Drank a lot of coffee.
I'm positively new!
