Amazingly, this insanely catchy song is still awesome after a million listens. "Are you / feeling / appre... hension!". That has to be my favorite part. Frank has always done songs in which you keep discovering great things, even though you thought you knew them by heart, and he does it again in a song which desn't even have a lead guitar... It blows my mind.

It is indeed an incredible tune. I know what you mean about the "Are you / feeling / appre... hension". It took me about ten goes to get the timing of that right when I was singing along. Frank seems to pack so many thing into one song that other artists might stretch to 4 or 5 separate songs. This bit reminds of bit of the last 'Its Educational' refrain in U-Mass as well. |

Incredible, incredible song. Great to see its the single. I love the how the extra guitar kicks in at the "have a drink..." part.
But bloody hell the whole song is phenomenal |

Lyrics (copied from the Bluefinger spoilers thread):
Talk to a man just to get a little work Then you talk to the hand just to get a little jerk Some people die, then they start to get old But I don’t wanna die upon on the threshold I got threshold apprehension
Threshold apprehension I got threshold apprehension
Every little shit's gotta find a salt lick If I don’t find my babe I’m gonna be junk sick Roll away the rock so I can get to my ascension Ain’t my first time on the threshold apprehension I got threshold apprehension … What?
Threshold apprehension I got threshold apprehension
Who’s carrying who? Who’s turning the screw? Who hath prophesied Petit paramour I will be the whore And you’ll be my suicide
We got on my bike and we rode to the sea I stood on the dock and you got on your knees Grand Marnier and a pocket full of speed We did it all day till we started to bleed
Are you feeling appre…hensive?
I can leap higher than an old king toad I do 185 on the new ring road I love a blue girl and I like my grog It’s a black and white world, cos I'm a scorpio dog
Have a drink, piss by the seventh floor And wait a hundred years for the elevator door Come a time if you wanna lose attention It’s the last time on the threshold apprehension I got threshold apprehension Say what?
Threshold I got threshold apprehension Threshold
Who’s carrying who? Who’s turning the screw? Who has prophesied Petit paramour I will be the whore Be my suicide
Who’s carrying who? Who’s turning the screw? Who has prophesied Petit paramour I will be the whore Be my suicide |

isn't it "are you/feeling/appre.....hensive?" ?
nonetheless, I don't disagree.

Ok, I made the change. Can't say I hear it that way, but since both of you do, I'm conceding. Either way would make sense, though.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

ooh, that reminds me, I hear it, or think of it as "who hath prophesied"
and while I'm at it, I hear it as
"I wanna die upon the threshold"

gah, I only half love you fbc ;)
I'm certain at that bit that there's a 'sss' rather than a 'shhhh'. Listen to when he definitely sings 'apprehension', it's different.

Yeah, Llama, it's "hath" for sure. (I've made the change.) But I disagree on "wanna" vs. "don't wanna." I wish I had a clue what this song was about, and maybe that'd help. It's a serious difference in meaning between wanna and don't wanna.
And now fbc says it's "hension," and I wanna switch it back because I love Soren more than you, Steve. Well, not really. But I'm leaving it as "hensive," nonetheless.
Maybe the damn lyrics will be in the liner notes this time. That'd be helpful, FB, if you're paying attention.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

I just don't hear a 'don't' at all. Funnily I always heard it as 'I wanna die before the thresh..." but you're right, it's 'upon'.
I always thought the song was about him killing himself before he died naturally.

the wanna is weird it sounds like it could "d'wanna" but it makes more sense if it was just wanna. i can hear wanna if i want to, but he sings it weirdly

What makes this song for me are the high vocal notes Frank throws in at odd times. Like "and wait a hundred years for the elevator door...". So punk rock-sounding. Love it.
And the "ooo-wee-ooo" backing vocals are another great detail.
I hope I get to see these songs played live. I'm confident they will slay. |

Well, I just saw the tribute video for "Threshold Apprehension".
I really don't like this song at all. It sounds like a fake Pixies song. Forced screaming and off-key singing over a slow "classic rock" riff? This is not the return of Black Francis. The "threshold threshold threshold threshold" bits mark one of the few times I've found Mr. Thompson's vocals to be overtly annoying and unpleasant; he's embracing the antithesis of those smooth vocals he reached on that awesome Frank Black Francis Disc 2 version of "Where is My Mind". Does anyone like disc 2 of Frank Black Francis? Hello?
Ah well. At least Frank seems to be having a good time. I'm not criticizing those who enjoy the music; I'm just surprised that the song seems to be unanimously loved and that hitherto, nobody has said anything negative about it. |

Couldn't disagree with you more about Threshold Apprehension but if we all had the same opinions this would be a dull place. As for FBF Disc 2 I think it's just an interesting diversion, nothing more.

I was listening to Frank Black Francis album the other day... this is an album that will take me years to get into... you have to really force yourself through the album because it is so bizarre in my opinion. Was this album well recieved by most Fb fans?
Back to Threshold. I absolutely love this song.. I love the way Frank sings it and wish he would sing more like this in the future.

I'm confused... you have a CD of just Los Angeles. You mean the same song repeated over and over?

Yes, in '93 the owner of University Records in Lubbock, TX got a cd of just Los Angeles before Frank Black's 1st solo record "Frank Black" came out. It was only a few days but I probably listened to it 100 times over the next few days. I have bought everything he's ever offered. I probably have bouth TOTY 5 times for disaster recovery purposes. I'm not a bum but I appreciate it. I am unfortunately not as technical as the 20 somethings that dominate these pages. I spent 4 hours last night looking through these pages for it and didn't find it. I signed up for Sendit.com and got some old live recordings but not anything on Bluefinger.

I thought he was saying "have drink, press button, seventh floor", which fits in with waiting for the elevator door.

How many times did you listen to this before passing judgement? I personally found it really beautiful, and as Frank himself stated and I quote " if you listen to my songs ONCE, your just not gonna get it" ( as to the comment on it sounding like a cheap pixies imitation) much like the water flowing in a river , you will not step into the same water twice , so why even try ? does not good wine progress with age ? and would every glass have to stand up to the last or may the bouquet be uniquley it's own?
