Yeah, I did wonder. The listing on the front page suggests otherwise.
Still, even a solo show would be bloody marvellous. |

as i just read that Frank will go to Werchter Festival(Belgium)with Joey S. on 29th june, maybe the show in Lille will be a kind of "warm up". So we may have the chance to see M Joey S. too. Just speculation. |

Just come back from the concert, a really great one IMO, but I'm not sure the whole audience will agree: a lot of people looked very disappointed after the show, probably because of the length of the show. The band played something like 1 hour and 20 or 25, don't know exactly, which is not so short especially compared with some previous shows of the tour. But on the front door of the Aeronef it was written: Frank Black : 21h30 / 23h25, and maybe people thought naïvely (does this word exist?) it will go like this.
Anyway, no surprises in this show for who had already read the last shows reviews. Frank didn't play guitar (execpt on the last song, the Albarn cover I think) but offered us an amazing frontman performance, with some incredible highlights. On Treeshold for example, he sung main part of the song on his knees, and then lying on the scene (sorry if I don't explain very well, but I have some linguistic limits...). Someone will soon have a fantastic photo to show (I think it was you, Jediroller)!!
The setlist was very close to the last shows'. Some songs sound really different played by this band and with only one guitar. Sometimes I missed a little bit the second guitar, but for some other songs, the "new versions" more basic, direct and agressive (it is probably not the wright word here) sounded really great: Freedom Rock, Ten Percenter, Thalassocracy for example were really fantastic.
For the Bluefinger songs, Tight Black Rubber and You can't break... were for me the highlights.
I couldn't say how was the crowd reaction, because I was in the front row and the only thing I could see or hear was ..the Man himself. But behind me there was a little group of fans really reactive and knowing almost every song, included the new ones, so in this part part of the public I can say the audience was really reactive. But once again, I don't think the rest of the audience really enjoyed the show. But I have to say I don't really care about this.
Sorry for being so confuse in this review, that's only first impressions from the show.
Setlist (not in the wright order)
Los Angeles Robert Onion Thalassocracy Freedom Rock Tight Black Rubber Threshold Apprehension All My Ghosts California Bound Old Black Dawning Massif Centrale Manitoba The Rockafeller Skank Captain Pasty You Cant' Break a Heart & Have It Lolita Remake/Remodel Dead Man's Curve the "albarn song"

Yeah, at some point Frank seemed to want to stick his head right into my lens!!!! I hope the pic turns out okay.... I'm not used to taking pictures in low lighting.
There might have been 300 or 400 people in there, I'll try to check with the venue later.
As for the show, the performance totally made up for some technical problems (Charles Normal's amp was acting really weird), which I did notice at one point but really didn't mind.
As someone else here (sorry, can't remember who) already pointed out, "the Albarn song" is actually "History Song" from The Good, the Bad & the Queen's self-titled record.
Missing from your list: "Ten Percenter", "The Black Rider", and Frank doing "666" a capella. Really great, but certainly drew some puzzled looks from the crowd... I wouldn't know, I had my nose practically stuck to the stage and couldn't see the audience.
What I did notice was that the whole front row knew "Threshold Apprehension" but didn't seem to recognize the other "Bluefinger" tracks. I bought the best of album here yesterday, I guess I was not the only one...
There will be more later on Blackolero, we got to spend some time with the boys (but not Frank, who had his family to take care of) and will publish an interview with the musicians. Jason, Charles, Ding & crew are the loveliest people you could ever want to meet! If any of them ever reads this, thanks again guys, you are too cool for words.
Gotta go now, I have 340 pictures to sort... :-o

We were at the concert, and we were rather disappointed, because of the length of the show (1 hour 15 minutes what is that ??), the poor balance of the sound (guitar way too loud, FB's voice sometimes barely audible), no encore, and not the least contact with the public from the entire band. So YES we were disappointed, quite mad at FB who made much greater shows in the past, we really hope it will be better in two weeks in Rock dans tous ses etats festival. One good point however for the musicians who had a drink with the audience after the show ! |

Actually, Frank's musicians specifically wanted to address this point (length of the show) when we talked to them, because they've seen complaints... this will be in the interview we're going to publish soon (going through the recording right now), but in a nutshell (and in Charles Normal's words): "Absolutely no filler."

Sounds like the great old Catholics shows. Bam, bam, bam. No filler. No chatter with the audience. Just one rock song after another.
Looks like about 20 songs. To me that's not much to complain about. |

I imagine the shorter shows is because of his voice, y'know, doctor's orders and that. |

And the band has only rehearsed for short time (I'm guessing) so they don't know that many songs (I'm guessing). |

the interpretation of Dead Man's Curve was very great. When Frank annonced the song, he asked the band to play it "not too fast", and gave the tempo snapping his fingers. I don't know how it was in the previous shows, but in Lille the guys didn't have a setlist, and it was Charles who told them which song to play. Sometimes he told them directly while they were playing, but often he said it directly in the microphone, which (don't know why) sounded pretty good to me. For example I really enjoyed Charles screaming "Thalassocracy, thalassocracy, thalassocracy,...!". Don't know why I enjoyed it so much. Maybe because it announced one of my favorite song, or maybe because I loved the serious and determination in his voice prononcing the word. Anyway, it's strange but I loved it! I 've never been a huge fan of 666, neither in the band version nor in the a capella version. It's always my "less favourite moment" in the shows, but I have to say the friday version sounded good.
Last thing: Charles Normal sang the "whooo ooo!" on the intro of Freedom Rock, and it sounded pretty good. I can't remember a live version of this song with the band singing the chorus, can someone tell me if it 's been a "first time " or if it has already happened on a previous tour. (maybe it's not a fondamental question, but i'm just curious!)

FRANCK BLACK REVEILLE L'ESPRIT FRONDEUR DU LARSEN
"Ô my ghost". |

Leather? Frank didn't wear no leather.
And he had no socks on. Rebel style!
Thanks Benji. Frank was litterally singing in my face (well, my lens...), it was impressive.
